Why am I a gritty person? What makes me so special?

When I was young my dad was an alcoholic and beat me up. Then my parents got a divorce and my mom and her boyfriends beat me up till I was eleven. Then I moved out and lived with my dad and his wife who just left me alone. They did not care much what I did as long as I was out of their way. In school I joined wrestling where I got strong getting beat up by people my own age. Eventually I was 125 lbs of lean muscle. Then I started “cutting” weight. I cut over 16% of my body weight in two weeks on a frequent basis. Despite that fact I consistently had the best record on my team. Few Americans know what it’s like to function with almost no food for two weeks on a consistent basis. Then I started running and ran on a broken leg my senior year while still breaking five minute miles. I later would run marathons and ultra marathons. I have ran from animals and people. I have had drinks thrown at me from cars and people spitting in my face. I have ran during thunderstorms and snowstorms. When I went to college I got NO help from my parents and almost always had a job. No one in my family had been to college before. In order to succeed where no one has sometimes you must do what has never been done. There were countless all nighters and struggles. This is just a brief summary of what makes me gritty. I have the scars on my back as souvenirs to remind me of who I am where I came from. Today I work at least ten hours each day because I am constantly tortured and haunted. I always fear that I have not provided my students with the best education that they deserve. I want them to be happy and successful. I know my story is a rough one but I know many more people have it far worse! The reality is there were several people in my life who went out of their way to help me. These people loved me for no reason and no reward.

My life has been struggle. My life has been a hard fought war but I believe the victory lies in the struggle. All of the hardships build character and make you better in the end. God has blessed with struggle.

What's more is I wish I could share this with my students to inspire them and let them know that no matter how tough things are they can do whatever they put their minds to.
