The midst of a war, a war without soldiers. No blood spilt on a non-existent battlefield, with no one left to spill it.

‘Stead of the shells, you ride mechanical comets, speeding through the night air, nuclei colliding;

they burst, in a field of white fury.

With my back to the city, nine miles away – the heat on my neck, but no hostiles firing.

They're far in the east, on that enemy horizon

waiting with impersonal distance.
