FADE IN:

EXT. PARKING LOT OF APARTMENT COMPLEX – LATE NIGHT

NATHAN steps out of a car driven by an anonymous DRIVER. It’s mid spring somewhere in mid-west America.

NATHAN

Hey, thanks again for the ride man.

DRIVER

No worries, Happy Birthday dude!

NATHAN

Thank you! Goodnight.

Nathan walks down a sidewalk to his apartment building. He’s obviously drunk and wobbling. He’s holding a six pack in one hand and one of the six pack beers in the other. He chugs the beer and puts the empty bottle back in the pack.

We follow him as he struggles to walk up a flight of stairs and inside the building. He continues through a hallway with rooms on both sides.

He stops at the second door on the left. We can hear a crash from inside the door of a bottle breaking. Nathan is oblivious to this. He opens the door.

INT. NATHAN’S APARTMENT – LATE NIGHT

The apartment is small. The entry room is a combined area to make a LIVING ROOM AREA to one side with a window looking outside, on the other side is the DINING ROOM AREA with a small table. Behind this room is a KITCHEN with a BATHROOM at the back of it. Across from the kitchen are two BEDROOMS.

Nathan takes a step inside the room.

NATHAN

It’s only been three hours and I’ve already sold my soul to Satan!

Nathan’s roommate NICK and neighbor TYLER are silent staring at each other in the living room area.

Nathan stands in confusion at the door entry.

NATHAN

Guys?

NICK

(to TYLER)

I want you to understand I’m serious. I swear to God I’ll kill you.

TYLER

I was just joking man let’s have another drink, calm down.

Nathan starts to walk towards the dining table hesitantly.

Nick’s seriousness turns into a fake smile.

NICK

Ha, ok, yeah I was just tripping let’s have another.

Nick and Tyler sit down at the table. Nathan sets the six pack down.

NATHAN

Man you guys had me freaked out for a second. Let’s take a shot.

They all take shots without saying anything to each other.

TYLER

So, I…

Suddenly Nick grabs the almost empty liquor bottle and slams it on Tyler’s head. Tyler immediately drops and begins shaking.

NATHAN

Holy shit what the fuck!

Nathan bolts over to help Tyler, he’s panicking and doesn’t know what to do.

Nick stands back in a daze.

Tyler’s body goes limp.

NATHAN

(Breathing heavy)

I think you killed him Nick.

NICK

No I didn’t he’s just knocked out. He’ll be fine, I’ve been knocked out before.

NATHAN

Fuck man, no. No, he’s more than just knocked out.

Nathan checks Tyler’s pulse.

NATHAN

I’m not feeling anything.

NICK

You’re drunk, let’s just take him in to the bathroom and run water on him.

NATHAN

What? Why don’t we just shake him and wake him up.

NICK

I don’t think you’re supposed to shake awake a knocked out person. It’ll fuck with their head.

NATHAN

(Calming down)

What the fuck are you talking about? Shaking him will fuck with his head? How about a fifth to the dome, you think that might fuck with his head?!

Nick shrugs.

NATHAN

Ok…whatever…fine.

They drag his body into the bathroom and into the shower. They run water over him. He doesn’t wake up.

NICK

He’s fine man for real. Let’s just leave him here. Let’s just pass

out, we’ll all wake up like nothing happened.

Nick starts to walk back towards the living room. Nathan follows. Nick opens a beer with his teeth from the six pack and takes a drink.

NICK

He’s gonna wake up in an hour and go back to his room. We’ll all feel shitty in the morning and then we’ll get ready for your party man!

NATHAN

(in a daze)

Yeah…ok…right on.

Nathan hands a beer from the six pack to Nick. Nick opens it with his teeth and hands it back to Nathan. Nathan takes a drink and sits down.

NICK

Happy Birthday Nathan. This is nothing. Stop looking so crazy. Let’s chug these and pass out ok?

They clink their beers together as Nathan continues to stare forward at nothing in a daze.

FADE OUT

OPENING CREDITS

INT. NATHAN’S APARTMENT – EARLY AFTERNOON

We see Nick and Nathan passed out on the floor. White daylight shines through their curtains. We see the broken bottles and empty cans on the table.

Nathan wakes up with hangover head pain. He slowly makes his way through the kitchen and to the bathroom. He opens the door and begins peeing while mentally still in a morning fog.

As he finishes he looks over and sees Tyler slumped over in the shower. He looks dead in a hunched and limp position.

Nathan zips up and shakes Tyler to wake him up. Nothing happens.

Nathan cracks his wrists and wiggles to wake himself up more. He grabs Tyler vigorously. Tyler’s body falls forward. Nathan angrily pushes him back and slaps him.

Tyler’s deadness is obvious now. Nathan steps back as shock starts to set in.

NATHAN

Niiiick! Nick wake the fuck up!

Nick’s eyes burst open. His eyes look around while he is still laying down.

NICK

Why?

NATHAN

What do you mean why? We’ve got a major situation!

Nick leans up and then begins to stand up.

NICK

God dammit what?

Nick stands up and grabs his head and neck. He pulls his head down to the left and multiple loud pops are heard.

He walks to the bathroom as Nathan stares at the body. Nick gets to the bathroom and looks over Nathan’s shoulder at Tyler.

NICK

Oh shit, what the fuck did we do last night?

NATHAN

We? I didn’t do shit. You fucking freaked out and killed him!

NICK

Bullshit.

NATHAN

No no no. That’s what happened. I remember that part.

They both back up and stare at each other.

NICK

Are you sure he’s dead?

NATHAN

Oh yeah, he’s dead alright. What do we do? I’m innocent right?

Nick turns on the cold water full blast getting water all over himself, Tyler, Nathan and the bathroom. Nathan turns the water off.

NICK

Ok so he’s dead.

NATHAN

Yes, that he is, Nick.

NICK

Well, we have get rid of him.

NATHAN

No, fuck you, I’m calling the police and I’m going to tell them what happened.

NICK

No you’re fucking not.

NATHAN

Why not?

NICK

If we call the police, we’re both going to jail for murder.

NATHAN

Not me, I didn’t hit him.

NICK

You were an accomplice.

NATHAN

That’s bullshit man I was hammered. I didn’t know what was going on. You said he was just knocked out!

NICK

I thought he was!

NATHAN

Well he’s dead now! What made you so mad in the first place?

NICK

I don’t know! He said something.

NATHAN

Oh, he said something…well what the fuck did he say!?

NICK

I can’t remember! Calm down. We both need to just calm down. What time is it?

Tyler’s phone rings.

NICK

We’ve got to get rid of his phone.

NATHAN

Well let’s see who it is.

Nathan grabs the cell phone out of Tyler’s pocket.

NATHAN

Of course, it’s Jess and holy shit it’s already 1:30! How did we sleep so long?

NICK

What time are people coming over?

NATHAN

I think around two.

NICK

Get rid of the phone, close the bathroom, we’ve got to clean up the place.

Nathan steps on the phone and puts it in the toilet. He flushes. The toilet clogs.

NATHAN

Well, that was stupid. What are we going to do with Tyler?

NICK

Just leave him in the bathroom. We’ll make up an excuse for people not to use it until we can get rid of him. This is easy, I just need something to help me think.

NATHAN

No Nick, I’m not liking this. Let’s just call the police!

NICK

No Nathan! Let’s start drinking again and calm down we are not calling the cops. Understood? No cops. We’ll deal with this ourselves.

NATHAN

Well let’s at least call off the party! This is some fucked up shit we’re dealing with! We can’t just pretend he’s not in there!

Nick grabs a full bottle of vodka from on top of the refrigerator and takes a drink.

NICK

Oh, yes we can. We sure can.

Nick hands Nathan the bottle.

NICK

Take a shot. It’ll help us think

and relax.

Nathan pauses and then takes a shot. He closes his eyes and shivers as it rushes through him. He blows out.

NATHAN

This is bad. This is really fucking bad.

NICK

Just start cleaning up.

Nick walks into the living room. He sees blood stains on the floor. He kneels down to look at them closely. He feels them. It’s mostly dry. He scratches at it causing some of the un-dried blood to get on his finger. He wipes his finger on his sock.

NICK

Grab some wine.

NATHAN

We don’t have wine. You know that.

NICK

We don’t have time to deal with this the right way. We’re going to pretend these blood stains are wine stains.

Nathan grabs a glass of water and pours it on the stains.

NATHAN

I’ll try and clean these up.

NICK

How are we going to block off the bathroom?

NATHAN

Do we have anything to make a sign?

Nick looks in the kitchen drawers.

NICK

We have duct tape and a marker. That’s all that we need.

Nathan struggles to clean up the blood stains. He grabs a rag from the kitchen and puts soap and water on it.

Nick puts tape over the bathroom door knob.

Nathan rubs the rag on the stains.

NATHAN

This isn’t working. I’m not sure what to do. Do we have juice or something I can maybe blend in with the blood?

NICK

(putting tape on the door)

Just get up as much as you can.

Nick grabs the marker and writes on the tape on the door, “Fucked up.” The tape roll is out. Nick throws it in the trash.

NICK

Damn, we have a lot to clean up.

Nathan throws the rag in the trash as well. The trashcan is full and starting to overflow.

NATHAN

I’m really not liking this Nick. I’m going to take out this trash. That rag is obviously not covered in wine.

Nathan takes the bag out of the can. Some trash falls on the floor.

NICK

Everything’s ok Nathan. It was an accident that happened at a really bad time.

NATHAN

Fuck. Well I understand that but

what are we doing? Why are we doing this? We should really just call this whole thing off and deal with Tyler, I want him out of here.

NICK

Stop freaking.

NATHAN

Oh you’re one to talk, Mr. Freakout killer.

NICK

Seriously! Shut up! All we need to do is act normal for a few hours.

We’ll get drunk and everything will be fine. I need you cool. Can you do that?

NATHAN

Yes.

NICK

Then fucking act cool. If you start freaking out when everyone is here we might as well just turn ourselves in. Do you want to go to jail?

NATHAN

No.

NICK

Then I suggest we keep our voices down and work together. We have to work together and trust that each of us have each other’s backs, ok?

NATHAN

Yes, ok. I’m with you.

NICK

Now run, take the trash to the dumpster and come right back.

EXT. SIDE OF APARTMENT BUILDING – EARLY AFTERNOON

Nathan walks outside with the bag of trash.

Nathan throws the bag of trash into a dumpster. He looks around at the parking lot and other apartment buildings. The parking lot is nearly empty. The day is dark and cloudy. It begins raining.

Nathan runs back inside.

INT. NATHAN’S ROOM – EARLY AFTERNOON

Nick has a fan on the floor trying to dry the soapy and crusty blood stains. He’s throwing cans and food and bottles into a new trash bag.

Nathan walks in the door.

NATHAN

Hey maybe we’ll get lucky and no

one will show up. Who all did you invite?

Nick throws away a paper towel and locks his bedroom door.

NICK

Just a few people. You might be right because most people couldn’t make it because they left for the off season.

NATHAN

Is Sam coming?

A knock is heard at the door. Nick and Nathan both stare at the door, then look at each other.

It knocks again.

SAM

(from outside door)

Hello? You know who it is!

NATHAN

It’s Sam.

NICK

Well, speak of the devil, let her in.

Nathan walks to the entry way.

NICK

Wait!

Nathan pauses at the door.

Nick unplugs the fan and puts it by the window.

NICK

Ok.

Nathan turns around and opens the door. Sam smiles.

SAM

Happy Birthday! Let’s do shots!

NATHAN

Ok!

Sam walks in holding a full bottle of vodka.

NICK

Hello beautiful Sam! Hey our bathroom isn’t working f.y.i.

SAM

Since when am I beautiful to you Nick? What’s wrong with your bathroom?

NATHAN

We don’t know. Just don’t use it.

(cont.)

Let’s do those shots.

SAM

Ok, I brought vodka is that ok?

NATHAN

That’s great.

NICK

Vodka makes me crazy.

SAM

Well you don’t have to drink it Nick, it’s not your birthday and you don’t need vodka to make you crazy. You’re already crazy.

NICK

I’m not crazy. And, of course I’m gonna drink this vodka because Nathan’s my best friend. If he drinks, I drink.

They all gather to the table. There are still some empty cups and bottles on the table from the day before. Sam pours some vodka into empty cups.

SAM

Here’s to a simple, safe, and fun 21st birthday. I love you Nathan.

NATHAN

I love you too Sam.

They all drink.

NICK

Ok, Sam will you help us finish cleaning up?

SAM

Of course.

NATHAN

No, she doesn’t need to clean.

(cont.)

Don’t worry Sam, I can handle this.

SAM

No I want to help. How about I’ll start by playing some music.

NATHAN

Perfect.

NICK

Just don’t play any of your gay shit.

SAM

What’s up with those stains? Is that wine? You guys don’t drink wine.

NICK

Well, Tyler was drinking some last night.

Nathan looks at Nick firmly. Nick looks back at Nathan and cringes.

SAM

Oh yeah, where’s Tyler now?

Nick looks at Sam.

NATHAN

Um, I think he’s still in his room.

NICK

Yeah he left last night. We haven’t heard from him yet today.

Sam doesn’t pay much attention to them and looks through the computer attached to the speakers.

Nick walks into the kitchen and puts dirty dishes in the sink. He looks in the refrigerator. There’s almost no food in it.

SAM

Ok, what should we listen to fresh adult?

NICK

Party music.

SAM

I’m asking Nathan.

NATHAN

How about some classic rock?

NICK

I sure hope you know what that is Sam.

Sam puts on a song.

Nathan picks up pieces of the bottle that killed Tyler off the floor. He cuts his finger on the shards of glass.

NATHAN

Ah fuck.

Nathan walks towards the sink to clean himself. Blood gets on all the dishes.

NICK

You ok?

NATHAN

Just fuckin’ peachy Nick.

NICK

Well it’s kind of gross to get the blood on the dishes. Can you use the bathroom sink?

NATHAN

Really Nick? Really? That’s low.

Especially for you at this time.

Sam starts dancing.

Nick slowly opens the bathroom door and enters to get a Band-Aid. Seeing Tyler’s dead body causes him to breathe heavily and struggle to put on the Band-Aid.

He closes the shower curtain to make sure everything is covered up.

Sam takes another shot from the vodka bottle. Nick walks over from the kitchen and takes another drink as well.

NICK

Hey Nathan, didn’t Dan say he’s coming over later?

NATHAN

(From inside bathroom)

Oh shit. God damnit. Yeah.

Nathan takes a deep breath and looks at himself in the mirror. He splashes water on his face, dries his hand and wraps the Band-Aid on his finger. He walks out of the bathroom and firmly closes the door.

NATHAN

What time is he coming over? I really don’t want him here.

SAM

What are you so nervous about? It’s just your 21st birthday.

NATHAN

It’s not that big of a deal Sam, he’s just our goofy boss. But I still don’t want him judging us. He does that. He loves to judge us and use it against us at work.

NICK

I think he’s coming over sometime after work which will probably be early since there’s almost no one here.

NATHAN

Well we can’t get too fucked up. (cont.)

We’re supposed to work tomorrow.

NICK

I don’t think we’re gonna have to

worry about that Nathan.

SAM

Why not?

Nathan gives Nick a concerned look. Nick winks.

NATHAN

Nothing Sam, he just knows we’re getting fucked up today. Give me another shot.

A knock is heard at the door.

SAM

That’s probably Tyler.

NICK

I don’t think it’s Tyler.

NATHAN

Why is everyone getting here so early?

Sam opens the door. Nathan takes a drink of vodka.

SAM

Chris? I didn’t know you were coming.

CHRIS walks in.

CHRIS

Hello to you too, Sam. Where’s Nathan? Happy Birthday dude. Shots!

NATHAN

One with you and then I’m done for a while, I’ll be sick. I just had a shot.

CHRIS

Shut up! You’re supposed to get sick. That’s the point.

Nathan walks to the table and sets down a bottle of whiskey.

CHRIS

I brought you some good shit.

NATHAN

I’ve already been drinking vodka; I don’t think I should mix.

CHRIS

Shut up and get over here.

Chris drinks straight from the bottle. He looks at Nathan.

CHRIS

Open your mouth.

NATHAN

Aw, what the fuck.

Nathan opens his mouth and Chris pours whiskey in. The whiskey over flows getting on Nathan’s clothes. Nathan steps back and swallows.

NATHAN

Jesus Christ.

CHRIS

Haha. And so it begins. The beginning of the end.

Nathan takes a seat at the table.

NICK

Well now it’s a party.

CHRIS

So when’s Tyler and Jess getting here?

SAM

Do you care more about Tyler or Jess?

CHRIS

Shut up Sam.

Sam sits down on the living room couch.

NICK

What’s that supposed to mean?

CHRIS

Nothing, Sam just thinks I’m still tripping over Jess.

NICK

Oh yeah?

SAM

Shut up Nick you know exactly what I mean, you’re still in love with her too. What is it with Jess and you obsessive guys?

NICK

No, I’m in love with you Sam.

SAM

Please.

CHRIS

I’m not obsessive, Sam. Can I use your bathroom Nathan?

NICK and NATHAN

No!

Chris looks at Nick and Nathan in confusion as everyone pauses.

CHRIS

Ok, well then where should I go?

NICK

Go see if you can use Tyler and Jess’s.

CHRIS

Ok, good deal. I’ll go over there and get accused of creeping.

Chris looks at his clothes and pats himself in order to make sure he looks alright and walks towards the door.

INT. HALLWAY – AFTERNOON

Chris walks out of Nathan’s door. He walks down the hall two doors down and knocks on a door. JESS answers the door.

CHRIS

Heeeey Jess.

JESS

Chris? What are you doing here?

CHRIS

I’m here for Nathan’s birthday party but their bathroom’s fucked up and I need to use yours.

JESS

Really? Ok, come in. Was Tyler over there?

INT. JESS’S ROOM - AFTERNOON

Chris walks in towards the bathroom knowing exactly where it is.

CHRIS

(walking)

No, I figured he’d be over here.

JESS

No, I figured he was over there. He’s not answering his phone.

Chris gets to the bathroom and pees with the door open.

CHRIS

That’ll just leave more time for me and you!

JESS

Oh shut it Chris.

CHRIS

Come on, I’m just joking. He’s probably out getting Nathan a present.

JESS

I hope so. He better not be drunk in the woods somewhere.

Chris walks out of the bathroom without washing his hands.

CHRIS

Just come over and party.

JESS

I’ll be over in a minute; I just have to do a few things first.

CHRIS

Can’t wait baby cakes.

Jess rolls her eyes.

INT. NATHAN’S APERTMENT – LATE AFTERNOON

Nick and Nathan are standing in the living room. Sam is sitting on the couch.

SAM

Why are you guys acting so weird?

NICK

We’re just trying to have a good time.

Chris walks in.

CHRIS

What did I miss?

NICK

Oh Sam is just bitching at us for having such a mess.

SAM

No, I’m just saying you better clean up those stains or you won’t get your deposit back. But I don’t care, let’s party and make even more stains!

Nick stares at Chris darkly.

NICK

You have a deal, Sam. So, what’s going on a Jess and Tyler’s, Chris?

CHRIS

Oh nothing, Jess will be over soon. She doesn’t know where Tyler is.

SAM

Let’s just start getting crazy. I’m ready to get twisted.

CHRIS

Good old Sam. Well let’s get on her level Nathan.

NATHAN

Umm. I don’t know.

NICK

Yes.

CHRIS

Listen to Nick, Nathan, you have to. It’s your 21st birthday.

NATHAN

I know that. Fuckin’ fine.

CHRIS

There you go. But I must warn you…the moment this shot goes down your throat…that’s the moment the Titanic hits the iceberg. For the

rest of the night the ship will be sinking and it’ll be up to you whether you sink with it, or find a life boat.

Nathan pauses and tilts his head in bewilderment.

NATHAN

Well that freaked me out. Just give me the shot.

CHRIS

That’s what my brother told me on my 21st. I’ll tell you he was right.

They all take a shot. Nathan steps back and grabs his stomach. He then looks at his cut finger. He shakes his head.

NATHAN

Fucking Titanic hit the iceberg. I’m not feeling good man. Maybe, I should use chaser next time.

CHRIS

Just go puke in the bathroom, buddy. Oh yeah that’s right. What’s wrong with your bathroom again?

NICK

It’s just fucked up in there.

CHRIS

That is what your sign says. Ha.

NATHAN

I’m going to Tyler’s.

INT. HALLWAY – AFTERNOON

Nathan runs over to Jess’s room. He slams on the door. Jess answers. He runs to the bathroom and pukes.

JESS

I see you’re having a good time. How’s the party? Is Tyler there yet?

Nathan pukes again at the sound of Tyler’s name.

Jess walks over to the bathroom.

JESS

What’s wrong with your bathroom again?

NATHAN

Nothing. It’s just fucked up.

JESS

Well try and make sure you don’t fuck up ours. You know we keep our place as clean as we can.

NATHAN

I won’t fuck it up.

He cleans off his face. He’s sweating. He stands up straight and takes a deep breath.

NATHAN

When are you coming over?

JESS

Well I guess I’ll come over now. Let me just leave a note for Tyler, I don’t know where he is and he won’t answer his phone.

She grabs a note pad and writes:

“Over at Nick and Nathan’s.”

EXT. APARTMENT COMPLEX PARKING LOT – AFTERNOON

Clouds cover the sun. Wind starts to blow tree leaves into the parking lot. It begins to rain heavy. Lightning strikes in a neighborhood nearby. A clap of thunder is heard.

INT. JESS’S APARTMENT - AFTERNOON

NATHAN

You don’t have to come over. I’m pretty drunk already.

JESS

Well I have to come now. Sam’s there right?

NATHAN

Yeah, she’s already drunk too.

JESS

No way.

NATHAN

Way.

They both walk out of Jess’s room.

INT. HALLWAY – AFTERNOON

Nathan looks down both ends of the hallway listening for other people. He only hears the rain. He takes a deep breath. As the door closes it doesn’t shut all the way.

NATHAN

Is it just us here?

JESS

Yeah, almost everyone else left for the off season already.

NATHAN

Seriously?

JESS

Yeah, it’s like that every year. Tyler and I are leaving as well this weekend.

NATHAN

Maybe Nick and I will leave too. Where are you going?

JESS

To Tyler’s hometown. He’s having me meet his family.

NATHAN

No shit. You’re both pretty serious.

JESS

Yeah, don’t let Chris know, and definitely don’t tell Nick. He’ll obsess and screw things up.

Nathan and Jess walk down to Nathan’s room. Nick trips on the front door mat.

NATHAN

God damn it. It’s the mat, not me.

INT. NATHAN’S ROOM - AFTERNOON

CHRIS

Hey buddy! How ya feelin’?

NATHAN

I don’t know, I’m alright I guess.

SAM

Another shot?

NATHAN

Not yet, hey Nick, can I talk to you outside?

NICK

Sure man, what’s up?

Nick and Nathan walk into the hallway and close the door.

INT. HALLWAY - AFTERNOON

NATHAN

The good news is this; the rest of the apartment is gone for the off season. But, the bad news is, we really need to call this whole party off. This whole Tyler thing is really starting to get to me. I’m sick and tired and I can’t deal with all of this.

NICK

You just need to make it a few more hours and we’re home free.

NATHAN

A few more hours? I can’t stand a few more minutes.

NICK

You’ll be fine. You just need to start drinking more. You got the sickness out of you.

NATHAN

(whispering)

I got sick thinking about our friend in the bathroom, not from drinking. You know how hard we drink.

NICK

Exactly. So, what’s the problem? We’ll party, everything will seem normal, everyone goes home, then, we’ll bury Tyler and sleep away our guilt.

NATHAN

You make it sound like we didn’t do anything wrong. You make it sound like Tyler isn’t your friend and instead he’s just a hassle to deal with.

NICK

I love Tyler.

NATHAN

Really? Or do you love his girlfriend?

NICK

Tyler was our friend. Period.

NATHAN

Was? He still is our friend and we still have to take care of him... Whatever. Why do you want everyone here? What’s the benefit of letting this charade go on?

NICK

(Loudly whispering)

To act normal! Nobody is just gonna leave and let you sleep. The whole point of today to everyone is to get you black out drunk.

Nick begins to relax.

NICK (cont.)

Don’t worry, I’ll stay sober

enough and make sure everything works out just fine.

NATHAN

Yeah, I can really trust you Nick. Just don’t do anything weird or say anything to Jess.

NICK

You have to trust me Nathan. You have to or we’re going to really end up fucked. What do you think I’m going to do to Jess anyway?

NATHAN

Just like Sam said, I know you’re still in love with her, and Chris is obsessed with her. I’m afraid you’re going to let this whole Tyler thing get to your head.

NICK

Nothing’s going to happen Nathan, I’m just as nervous as you about this whole thing. Let’s just get back in there and get you fucking drunk.

Suddenly JOE walks inside the building and down the hallway.

JOE

There’s the birthday boy!

NATHAN

Oh fuck.

NICK

I’m gonna use Jess’s bathroom real quick.

NICK

(whispering in Nathan’s ear)

I’ve got this Nathan, just a few more hours.

Nick walks down the hallway towards Jess’s room.

Nathan turns towards Joe who’s holding a book.

NATHAN

Hey Joe. I didn’t expect you to come here. Did you really come all this way for my birthday?

JOE

I couldn’t miss it bro.

Nick looks at Nathan and Joe talking and then steps inside of Jess’s room.

NATHAN

Where are you gonna stay?

JOE

Well, I was thinking I could stay here.

NATHAN

(pauses)

That’s cool man, let’s go inside. I’m only gonna be able to last about another hour. I started early.

JOE

Hey man, one hour is good enough, we can kick it tomorrow too. I’m so excited. We’re going to kick it so hard.

Nathan turns towards the door and closes his eyes in despair. Then quickly opens them and shakes his body to energize.

They walk inside.

INT. NATHAN’S APARTMENT - AFTERNOON

NATHAN

Hey guys this is my friend Joe from back home.

JOE

Hey guys.

Joe hands Nathan a book on murder mysteries.

JOE

Here Nathan a present, you still into mysteries?

Nathan takes the book and looks at the violent cover design.

NATHAN

Not today.

JOE walks towards the others.

JOE

What kind of music do you guys like? What’s up with these stains?

SAM

Another friend of ours spilled wine last night.

JOE

It looks like blood stains. Ha ha.

Nick closes the front door and walks into the room holding a box. He stares Joe down.

NICK

It’s just wine.

JOE

Are you Nick? Nathan’s told me a lot about you.

NICK

Yeah, I’m Nick, I hope he didn’t say too much.

JOE

Oh he just says you’re hilarious.

What you got there?

NICK

(walking towards his bedroom)

A package. A present for Nathan later.

JOE

Fun fun. Hey, Nathan, you should play us a song on the piano.

Nathan puts down the mystery book on the living room table.

Nick walks into his bedroom with the box.

NATHAN

I’d rather not my finger is cut.

CHRIS

Come on! A little cut doesn’t mean shit!

SAM

Yeah play Nathan.

JESS

Play Mr. Sandman!

Nick walks out of his room and locks his door.

NICK

Come on Nathan. You really should play. Remember this whole day is about you. Be the center of attention.

NATHAN

I guess I could play something.

Nathan takes a shot and then sits down at his keyboard. Everyone sits down and gets prepared to listen.

Nick starts to play a song that everyone starts singing along to.

As he plays, Sam gets up and walks towards the bathroom. Nick looks at her. Everyone else continues to sing along.

Sam looks at her phone and reaches to open the bathroom door oblivious to the tape on it.

Nick starts to get up and follow her.

As soon as she is about to open the door a loud beep is heard.

THE POWER GOES OUT.

Nathan’s keyboard goes out and everyone whines. Some light still shines through the windows but not much since it’s dark and cloudy outside.

Sam turns around and Nick opens the refrigerator.

CHRIS

Damnit, right at the good part!

NICK

Shit now our food is going to go bad. Hey Sam, remember our bathroom is broken.

SAM

Oh yeah, oops. Sorry Nick I almost used it. Well darn this storm.

Jess let’s go get some candles from your place, I forgot I have to use your bathroom anyway.

JESS

Great idea! Let’s have a birthday séance. Maybe spirits will tell us where Tyler is!

NATHAN

We don’t need to bring any ghosts into this party.

NATHAN

God damnit. My finger cut back open from playing.

NICK

No, go get the candles Jess, I want to see how this goes.

Joe looks out the windows and opens the curtains to let more light in. We see the dark powerless other apartment buildings.

JOE

It sure is hairy out there. Looks like the power went out on the whole block.

NATHAN

Well Damnit. What the fuck. Somebody find the vodka.

INT. JESS’S ROOM – LATE AFTERNOON

Jess and Sam are going through drawers with flashlights. The windows are open letting in some light as well.

SAM

Am I the only one that thinks something really weird is going on?

JESS

No, I know what you’re saying. Something is going on right?

SAM

I don’t know, I mean I know it’s his birthday and all but Nathan’s acting really strange. He’s nervous about something.

JESS

Do you think they know where Tyler is?

SAM

They said he was with them last night.

JESS

Did they say when he left?

SAM

No, they just said he made those wine stains. Tyler doesn’t drink wine right?

JESS

He does with me. But, he would never drink wine with those guys.

SAM

What’s up with that then?

JESS

Yeah, something fishy is happening here.

SAM

Now with this storm the day is only getting weirder.

They find the candles.

JESS

Let’s just go over there and see what we can do. You try to talk to Nathan alone. Go to his bedroom or something. You know he likes you, he’ll talk to you.

SAM

No, he won’t, he’ll want Nick to guide him. He’s like that even when he’s not nervous. He’s flakey.

JESS

Just do what you can. Use his birthday as a reason for you two to be alone. I’ll take care of Nick. I know they know where Tyler is. I think he might have gotten fired and is too embarrassed to talk to me.

Jess sparks up a candle.

INT. NICK AND NATHAN’S ROOM - EVENING

Nick, Nathan, Chris and Joe are all attempting to juggle with glow sticks.

NICK

Whoever drops the glow stick first has to drink.

JOE

Bullshit, I’ll be passed out in 10 minutes.

NICK

That’s my intention Joe.

NATHAN

That’s my intention too, don’t worry Joe.

Jess and Sam slowly walk into the room holding candles.

SAM

(imitating a ghost)

Ooooh. I aam the ghoost of birthday paaaast.

JOE

I’m the ghost of a birthday

present. Bad joke I know.

JESS

Don’t worry, we have more candles.

Suddenly DAN shows up eerily behind Sam.

DAN

You guys really throw some dark parties.

SAM

(startled)

Yikes!

NICK

Dan! You made it.

DAN

Where’s Nathan?

NATHAN

Over here.

DAN

Happy Birthday Nathan.

NATHAN

Thanks Dan, glad you could make it.

Sam and Jess begin setting up candles around the room.

CHRIS

Hey, let me help with the candles.

Chris drops his glow stick and grabs candles from Jess.

Nathan and Joe sit down on the couch. Nick sits at the dining table.

DAN

Hello everyone, I’m Dan, Nick and Nathan’s boss. Are you guys going to be ready for work tomorrow?

NICK

You know Dan, we’re actually already drunk. We’re probably going to call it quits early tonight so we can make it tomorrow.

DAN

Well that’s good. Don’t call it too early though, I want to have a little fun before I go home to the wife.

Nick walks over to Nathan who is sitting on the couch.

NICK

(whispering)

We’re almost there, buddy. Just keep it straight. Give it an hour.

Nathan grabs the vodka bottle and takes a big drink. He breathes out, and then takes a deep breath.

NATHAN

One hour.

NICK

Hey just to let you know Dan our bathroom’s broken so you can use Jess’s down the hall.

DAN

Alright, I’m cool with that.

JESS

I’m Jess. I’m just two doors down. Nick and Nathan have been friends with my boyfriend and I for years.

DAN

Very nice to meet you Jess, I don’t think I’ll be here very long. Which one’s your boyfriend?

JESS

He isn’t here yet.

NICK

Jess and I used to date last year Dan.

DAN

Oh really? Then I should remember you shouldn’t I Jess?

JESS

(scoffing)

We didn’t date for long.

NICK

Long enough for us to fall in love.

Dan smiles and gives a fake laugh.

CHRIS

Even I dated her longer than you.

JESS

Anyway everyone, this party isn’t over. We’re going to take advantage of the power outage.

NATHAN

How?

Sam sits next to Nathan.

SAM

With ghosts.

NATHAN

I’m not liking this.

DAN

Ooh this sounds fun.

NICK

Ok, we’ll have this little ghost gathering and then after that

let’s end the night everyone. Dan has reminded us that we need to be alert for work tomorrow.

DAN

Don’t blame me for your lameness.

JESS

It’s not even night yet but ok, fine. I’ll make everything fun.

JOE

I don’t fuck with ghosts. I’m going to go get food.

Joe gets up off the couch. Nick watches Joe closely as he walks towards the door.

NICK

Hey pick me up something too. I’ll pay you when you get back.

JOE

What do you want?

NICK

I trust you.

Joe nods and walks out the door.

SAM

You ready for some birthday ghosts Nathan?

NATHAN

No, not really.

JESS

Ok, let’s all have a moment of silence!

Jess grabs a glass and fills it with water. She sets the glass of water in the middle of the living room on the coffee table.

She accidentally glances at the blood stains. There are fresh stains from Nathan.

JESS

Was someone bleeding?

NATHAN

Yeah I cut my finger earlier. It broke back open when I played the piano.

JESS

How did you make that much blood?

NICK

The other stains are from Tyler.

JESS

What?

NATHAN

Never mind all that, let’s get on with the ghosts.

She shakes her head closes her eyes and takes a deep breath in. She exhales.

JESS

Does everyone have their questions ready?

DAN

I do.

CHRIS

We’re supposed to have questions ready?

SAM

What are you going to ask the spirits Nathan?

NATHAN

Fucking nothing.

JESS

Everyone quiet! Dan, go ahead with your question.

Dan stares into a candle. The room goes dead quiet. The hard rain can be heard hitting the window.

DAN

Dear spirit, are Nick and Nathan going to make it into work tomorrow?

NICK

Of course Dan.

JESS

Shh, Nick. Let’s see what the spirits have to say. Spirit, if the answer is yes, move this water, if the answer is no, stay still.

NATHAN

Oh what the fuck is this? Of course the water is going to stay still.

JESS

Not always! It’s a storm, anything can make this water shake.

NICK

Stay cool Nathan, it’s just for fun.

SAM

Yeah, Nathan, this is just for fun.

DAN

I don’t know guys. That water looks pretty still to me. Should I just write you guys up now?

NATHAN

I have a question. Will the power come back on tonight?

JESS

Wait, ask again to the spirit. Everyone quiet.

Nathan looks up towards the ceiling and puts his arms out.

NATHAN

Good spirit, will the power come back on…tonight?

JESS

Spirit, if the answer is yes, move this water, if no, stay still.

The water doesn’t move.

NICK

So, it’s gonna be a black out all night.

Nick looks at Nathan and smiles.

NATHAN

Let me get another drink.

JESS

I have a question now. Spirit, is Tyler in this building? If yes, move this water, if no, stay still.

Nathan stares at the glass. Nick stares at the glass. The glass doesn’t move.

SAM

Well I guess…

Suddenly a loud thunder claps causing everyone to jolt. The water shakes in the glass.

JESS

Well I think that counts as a yes.

NICK

Fuck off.

JESS

Shhh Nick. Spirit, is he with another girl? If yes, move this water, if no, stay still.

NATHAN

I think we’ve asked enough questions.

CHRIS

I want to ask more, let’s ask deeper questions. Fuck Tyler.

DAN

Yeah, I’m with that guy, I want to know more about the spirit.

NATHAN

What makes anyone think we’re even talking to a spirit? This is some stupid kid shit.

Nick stands up.

NICK

Nathan’s getting bored. I think it’s almost time for everyone to leave.

DAN

No way, this is kind of fun. Let me have some kid fun. I don’t want to go home. I’m not ready for my wife yet.

SAM

I don’t want to leave! Nathan, I don’t have to leave do I?

NATHAN

No… it’s ok we can ask one more question.

DAN

Yay!

CHRIS

Let me ask it then.

JESS

Nope.

CHRIS

What the fuck Jess?

JESS

Spirit!

Everyone goes silent.

JESS(cont.)

Is Tyler dead?

NATHAN

Never mind, fuck this.

Nathan knocks over the glass. Water gets onto Jess.

Jess stands up.

JESS

Hey! We’re just playing around Nathan, why’d you do that?

NATHAN

It’s a scary question, it doesn’t mean anything, and it’s my birthday! I should’ve asked the last question.

JESS

Fine Nathan, I’ll leave, and I’ll take the candles with me. Have fun alone in the dark.

NATHAN

I have camping lanterns.

NICK

No Jess, he’s just drunk. Stay for a little bit longer but fuck this ghost shit.

DAN

We can’t end the party now.

JESS

What do you suggest Dan?

DAN

Well, what about a different game?

NATHAN

Hey, I’m sorry Dan, but at least I’ll make it to work tomorrow.

CHRIS

That’s a lie.

Nathan looks at Chris confused.

NATHAN

What are you saying Chris?

CHRIS

I’m gonna make sure you’re twisted before this night’s over. Remember, the Titanic is sinking right now. I made sure of that.

DAN

You have great friends Nathan.

JESS

I know what we can do in this dark that would be perfect.

Chris hands Nathan the vodka bottle.

CHRIS

Drink up buddy. The darkness continues.

Nathan takes a drink.

NATHAN

What should we do Jess?

JESS

Hide and Seek.

CHRIS

Yeah!

SAM

Yeah Nathan, let’s play hide and seek. We’ll use the whole building.

NATHAN

No, absolutely not.

SAM

Please, Nathan?

Sam pulls Nathan closer to her.

Nathan pours himself a drink.

NATHAN

One game. I’m it.

JESS

Yay! Everyone go hide.

Nathan gives Nick a look.

Nick walks into his bedroom.

INT. NATHAN’S BEDROOM – EVENING

Sam and Nathan are alone on Nathan’s bed. A few candles light the room. A vodka bottle sits next to Nathan.

SAM

So, is your birthday a good enough excuse for you to actually make a move on me?

NATHAN

I’ve made moves on you before.

Sam leans close to Nathan’s face.

SAM

But I always have to make a move first.

INT. NATHAN’S KITCHEN - EVENING

Nick walks out of his bedroom and locks the door. He notices water on the floor outside the bathroom door coming into the kitchen. He sets his glass down and cracks open the bathroom door.

INT. NATHAN’S BEDROOM - EVENING

Sam grabs Nathan’s hand. Nathan takes a drink with his other hand.

SAM

Are you ok, Nathan?

NATHAN

Yeah, I’m just having another drink.

Nathan fills up his cup almost half way full with straight vodka. Sam cringes, then looks at Nathan’s eyes and smiles.

SAM

Are you having a fun birthday?

NATHAN

Yeah, it’s great. I’m legal, yay.

INT. NATHAN’S KITCHEN – EVENING

Nick opens the bathroom door. The toilet is running and water is everywhere.

NICK

What the fuck are we doing?

Nick looks at the body. The room is starting to stink so he covers his nose.

INT. NATHAN’S BEDROOM – EVENING

Sam and Nathan are about to kiss.

NICK

This is too fucked up. Nathan! Fuck this game! Call it off.

NATHAN

(cut off from kissing)

What?

NICK

The bathroom problem has gotten worse.

NATHAN

Oh shit! Sam, I’m sorry, but you have to leave. Can you tell everyone it was a great party and thanks for coming?

SAM

No! Wait, this party isn’t over until you’re passed out drunk!

I thought that’s how this works.

NICK

(from outside the door)

Bitch come on.

SAM

Don’t call me a Bitch, Nick.

Sam and Nathan walk out into the living room area. Suddenly Joe walks in with fast food.

JOE

I’ve got burgers.

NICK

This fuckin guy.

NATHAN

Fine party’s not over yet. I’ll drink until I pass out.

NICK

Seriously Nathan? Séances, hide and seek? What’s next truth or dare?

JOE

Fuck yeah!

NATHAN

Ok party over.

JOE

What?

SAM

What’s going on. Nathan it’s your birthday, do what you want. I was just joking; you don’t have to pass out. But don’t let Nick boss you around. You’re a man now. Make your own decisions.

NICK

I’m not bossing him around Sam, I’m just making a strong suggestion.

SAM

(imitating Nick)

What’s that? Oh no! Our toilet is leaking, party over!

NICK

Shut up Sam.

SAM

Fuck you Nick! I’m leaving Nathan. Happy Birthday.

NATHAN

Wait.

SAM

I’m drunk, you guys are drunk, this is done. Dare me to stay.

JOE

I double dog dare you.

Sam goes out the door as Dan comes back in.

DAN

Woah, let’s not all hide in the same location in middle of the room.

NATHAN

I’m going outside. I need some fresh air.

DAN

I didn’t know we could hide outside.

NATHAN

We’re not playing anymore Dan.

Nathan walks outside and Dan follows.

DAN

What’s up Nathan? Everything alright?

NATHAN

Nothing Dan! I’m just drunk.

DAN

Hey, hey, it’s ok. Just chill.

NATHAN

I’m sorry Dan, I’ve just got something on my mind that I keep trying to forget but can’t.

Nathan and Dan walk outside.

EXT. APARTMENT BALCONY – DUSK

Nathan attempts to light a cigarette but the wind makes it hard. Dan blocks the wind for him. We see just how dark the apartments and the parking lot really are. The rain is heavy.

DAN

Take the day off tomorrow. I was going to let you anyway. Consider it my gift to you.

NATHAN

Thank you.

DAN

But, tell Nick he better be in tomorrow at 8.

NATHAN

Ok.

DAN

I’m going to take off. Take advantage of this darkness and get a good sleep.

NATHAN

I will Dan.

DAN

But no excuses for Nick.

The wind picks up and Dan walks down the stairs to the parking lot. Nathan inhales the cigarette.

DAN

Crazy storm! Stay safe! Happy 21st, it sucks for all of us!

NATHAN

Yeah, I’m sure it does.

Nathan puts out the cigarette.

INT. JESS’S ROOM – NIGHT

Jess and Chris are hiding in a closet.

CHRIS

What if Tyler walked in right now.

JESS

I don’t think that’s going to happen.

CHRIS

Why?

JESS

I don’t know, but I think Nick and Nathan know something that we don’t know.

Sam opens the closet door.

SAM

The game is over. The party’s over.

JESS

Did you find anything out?

SAM

Only more assurance that Nick’s an asshole and Nathan’s a little bitch.

INT. NATHAN’S ROOM - NIGHT

Nick wipes up the water spilling out from under the bathroom door. He throws the wet towel into the bathroom and closes the door quickly.

Joe is sitting on the couch skimming through the mystery book. A camping lantern sits on the table lighting up the room eerily.

Nathan walks in the door.

Nick walks to the living room area.

NATHAN

Let me get another drink.

NICK

I’m just going to drink out the bottle over here.

JOE

Hey Nathan, you’re back. I’ve got another present for you now that everyone is gone.

Joe leans forward and looks closely at Nick and Nathan.

JOE

I got more than burgers.

He pulls out a good sized bag of cocaine. Nick sits down.

NICK

No shit.

JOE

You should know I wouldn’t just give you a random book bro. I would have brought a mirror if I had one.

NATHAN

Well fuck yes. Dan did give me the

day off tomorrow. Nick you have to go in though.

NICK

You really are drunk. Let’s do some lines and see how that’s going to work… bro.

Joe pours some cocaine on the mystery book. He uses a glow stick to look at it closely. He takes out a credit card and begins to separate the pile into lines.

JOE

Birthday boy first.

Nathan rolls up a dollar bill.

NATHAN

Well, if this is the Titanic, I’m going to sink now for sure.

Nathan snorts a line.

Joe smiles and Nick stares at the other lines.

JOE

I’m not sure what that means but ok. Nick?

Nick does a line.

JOE

Here we go.

Joe does a line.

There’s a silence. We hear the rain getting louder from outside.

NATHAN

Not exactly a relaxing end to the day.

JOE

Oh no, we’re just getting started.

NICK

Are you staying here tonight Joe?

JOE

Yeah if that’s cool with you.

NICK

You did provide the cocaine.

Joe leans back in the couch and stretches.

JOE

Ha! Do you like your gift Nathan?

Nathan rubs his nose.

NATHAN

It’s a perfect gift Joe.

All three of them sniff. Nathan stares at the mystery book in the eerie lighting.

JOE

Soooo, what the fuck are you guys hiding in the bathroom?

Nick quickly stands up heated.

NICK

What makes you say that?

JOE

Woah, nothing Nick, I’m just joking. Here let’s do another line.

NATHAN

Calm down Nick.

NICK

No, what the fuck makes you say we’re hiding something?

JOE

Nick woah, seriously I’m joking, it’s just funny, whatever you put

in that toilet must be a pretty embarrassing the way you guys are dealing with it. Ha!

Nick suddenly punches Joe in the face.

NATHAN

Nick!

NICK

He knows man. He’s gotta go.

JOE

Jesus christ, tame your friend Nathan.

Nick grabs a beer bottle and breaks it over Joe’s head. Joe drops to the ground.

JOE

Ahh!

Nathan runs and grabs a knife from the kitchen.

NATHAN

Stop it Nick! This is how this all started in the first place!

NICK

What are you gonna do with the knife Nathan? Kill me?

NATHAN

Well you’ve already killed one person in the past 24 hours.

JOE

What the fuck are you guys talking about?

NICK

Put down the knife and help me take him out to his car!

JOE

Just chill guys!

Joe struggles to try and sit up. He grabs his phone. Nick notices and kicks his hand.

NICK

He tried to call the cops! I’m gonna kill him!

NATHAN

Of course he’s calling the cops! That’s what he should do!

NICK

Oh ok, so you want to go to jail!

NATHAN

No but come on.

Nick grabs the knife out of Nathan’s hand and stabs Joe in the heart. Joe shrieks and tries to pull the knife out as he stares at Nathan.

Nathan stares in disbelief.

Blood streams out of Joe’s chest as he lays down and dies.

NICK

Now let’s get these bodies out of here and pretend this never happened!

NATHAN

You’ve gone psycho Nick. I’m calling the cops.

NICK

Don’t make me kill you too.

NATHAN

What did you just say?

Nathan grabs another knife from the kitchen.

NICK

So you want to have a knife fight?

Nathan starts to tear up but then lets his guard down and drops the knife.

NATHAN

Just calm down Nick, I won’t call the cops.

A knock is heard at the door.

NICK

Somebody probably already did.

Nick locks the door.

SAM

(From behind the door)

Hey it’s Sam, I think I forgot my purse.

NICK

Here’s what we’re gonna do.

We’re gonna drain the blood in the bathtub. We’re gonna chop up the bodies and we’re gonna bail. Abandon ship.

NATHAN

Chop them up with what? You want to just go ask Jess for her machete so we can chop up her boyfriend?!

NICK

Shhhhh! Ok, you’re right.

Sam knocks again.

SAM

(from outside the door)

Guys I know you guys are in there! Just let me in for a second Nathan.

NICK

Let her think we’re asleep.

NATHAN

Jesus fuck. She knows we’re not asleep. Let’s just make it look like a knife fight between these two and put Joe in the bathroom with Tyler.

NICK

Good idea.

NATHAN

Let’s do another line before we do this.

They each go to the table and they shake hands.

NICK

You were right. I fucked up and now it’s all over. We’re fucked.

NATHAN

I fucked up too. This is about as bad as it comes.

NICK

The Titanic is fully under water but we can still find a lifeboat.

NATHAN

We’re not gonna get away with this, but we can at least get fucked up enough to think we can.

NICK

And that’s all she wrote.

Sam knocks on the door again.

Nick hands Nathan the vodka bottle and begins lining up the cocaine.

INT. HALLWAY OUTSIDE OF NATHAN’S ROOM - NIGHT

SAM

Let me in Nathan! God damnit. I hate boys.

Sam walks down the hall to Jess’s room frustrated.

INT. JESS’S ROOM – NIGHT

SAM

That’s it. I know they’re not asleep. I say we break in.

CHRIS

I wouldn’t be surprised if they are passed out.

JESS

Bullshit. Let’s do it. I’m not leaving until they tell me what happened to Tyler.

CHRIS

You girls are tripping; I’ll go over there.

INT. NATHAN’S ROOM - NIGHT

Nick and Nathan shove Joe’s body into the bathroom and make it look like he killed Tyler. They set the knives on the ground next to the bodies. There’s blood on their hands and clothes.

NICK

We’ll just say they killed each other. That looks believable right?

They both stare at the bodies. The bodies do not look to be in believable positions. They don’t bother to wipe the blood off their clothes.

NICK (cont.)

Let’s do another line.

NATHAN

Let’s not do it all too fast.

NICK

Let’s just do bumps. We have liquor left.

They each go to the coffee table and put a little bit of the cocaine on the edge of the mystery book. They each snort a little bit. Nick hands the bag of the cocaine to Nathan. Nathan puts it in his pocket. They don’t care about the blood on their hands.

NICK

Ok let’s quickly each pack one bag of necessities.

Nathan goes to his room and grabs a backpack. He then throws in a pair of clothes. He changes into a black hoodie.

Nick kneels to grab things from under his bed. Under his bed he pulls out a box. He opens the box and pulls out a 9mm hand gun. He puts it in his waist. He pulls out the box he had earlier in the day. We don’t see what’s in this box.

NICK

(calling to the other room)

How much cash do you have?

Nathan looks into an envelope in his drawer and then shoves it in his backpack.

NATHAN

(calling back)

Maybe $700.

NICK

That’s good enough.

NATHAN

So what are we going to do about Sam, Jess, and Chris?

Nick walks into Nathan’s room. He shows Nathan the gun.

Nathan gives Nick a serious look.

NICK

I don’t know about Chris, but we’re taking the girls with us.

NATHAN

No.

NICK

They’re either coming with us or they’re getting killed. I’m not going to argue.

NATHAN

It doesn’t have to be that black and white.

A knock is heard at the door.

CHRIS

(from behind the door)

Yo, it’s Chris.

NICK

Looks like we’re about to find out.

(calling to Chris)

Just a minute!

Nick hides behind the door and holds out his gun. He opens the door slowly.

Chris enters.

CHRIS

What the fuck is going on guys Jess and Sam are freaking ou…

(cut off)

Nick covers Chris’s mouth with his hand and closes the door.

NICK

Not a peep, Chris.

Chris starts to breath heavily.

Nick takes him to the couch and sits him down pointing the gun at him.

Nathan stands next to Nick.

NICK

You say anything and I’ll shoot you.

Chris nods.

NICK

Give me your phone.

Chris hands him his phone. Nick steps on it and hands it to Nathan. Nathan takes it and throws it into the sink and runs water over it.

NICK

We’re going on the run. Things got out of hand and now two people are dead. Can we trust you not to say shit to anybody?

Chris nods.

NICK

Do you want a shot to calm down?

Chris nods. Nick gives him a cup of whiskey. Chris drinks it.

NICK

Ok, we’d tie you up but we don’t have the materials.

Chris lightly chuckles hesitantly.

NICK

Nod if Sam and Jess are in Jess’s room.

Chris nods.

NICK

Nathan, go get Jess and Sam. Don’t say anything about Tyler or Joe.

Nathan walks out of the room. Nick and Chris stare at each other. Joe’s fresh blood stains are next to Chris’s feet.

EXT. HALLWAY - NIGHT

Nathan knocks on the Jess’s door. Jess opens it.

JESS

Well look who it is.

Nathan rushes in and closes the door.

INT. JESS’S ROOM - NIGHT

NATHAN

Don’t say anything we need to get out of here now. Nick has gone crazy. I’m not sure what is about to happen.

JESS

What?

NATHAN

Seriously we need to leave now.

SAM

What the fuck are you talking about? How high are you right now?

NATHAN

I’m serious!

A gunshot is heard.

NATHAN

Jesus no! I’m sorry girls. I don’t know what to do right now. Just prepare for the worst.

SAM

What does that mean?

Nathan looks at Sam with fear and confusion. He runs out of Jess’s room.

INT. NATHAN’S APARTMENT – NIGHT

Nathan quickly comes in and looks around the room in shock.

NATHAN

What have you done Nick?

Chris is dead next to the window. Nick throws Nathan his backpack. Nathan stares at Chris almost indifferent with his death.

NICK

He tried to run. It’s time to go now.

Nathan takes a drink from a cup. He then starts to grab all the alcohol in the room and shove it into his backpack. Half a bottle of vodka, half a bottle of whiskey, and two beers.

Nick grabs the camping lantern and pokes his head into the hallway.

NICK

Where are the girls?

Nathan puts on his backpack.

NICK

(Calling down the hall)

Jess! I need your car!

INT. HALLWAY – NIGHT

Nick walks up to Jess’s door. It’s locked. He shoots it open.

Nick opens the door and takes a step in. Jess and Sam are sitting on the couch scared. The room is only lit by a few candles and some glow sticks.

JESS

What are you doing Nick?

NICK

First, I’m taking your car keys. Give me your phones and do it fast.

Nick grabs her car keys from the table. Jess and Sam hand him their phones.

Nathan rushes in. Nick stomps on the phones and throws them in the sink.

NATHAN

Let’s go!

NICK

You heard him girls it’s now or never.

Nick points the gun at them, and leaves the lantern on the table.

NICK

You’re both coming with us.

JESS

But…

NICK

Don’t speak Jess, just move!

They get up. Nathan waves them along towards the hallway.

NATHAN

Act normal in case anyone is outside or in the other buildings.

EXT. APARTMENT COMPLEX PARKING LOT - NIGHT

Jess and Sam follow behind Nathan. Nick trails behind the girls. He is holding Jess’s purse with the gun hidden in it.

They all walk out into the rain storm. Nathan and the girls run towards the only car in the parking lot as Nick slowly looks around for others. He’s not caring about the rain. The moon is the only light.

INT. JESS’S CAR - NIGHT

Nick is in the driver’s seat, Nathan in the passenger, Jess and Sam are in the back seat.

NICK

Ok, Jess, Sam. We’re not bad guys ok? We just need to make it to the city and then we’ll let you go.

NATHAN

We’re not kidnapping you guys.

Nick starts the car.

SAM

That’s what it feels like Nathan. We’re hostages.

NICK

We just can’t trust you. We’re going to the city were we can blend in. If we can drive in this storm. I’ve always hated driving your car.

JESS

Then let me drive.

NICK

Oh no. I’m going to watch the road while Nathan watches you. Right Nathan?

NATHAN

Right.

They pull out of the parking lot.

NATHAN

God damn it’s dark.

They pull out onto the highway.

NICK

So we can all handle this? We’re going to the city. Then Jess can have her car back and we’re going to find a place to stay. Ok?

JESS

Yes.

NICK

Sam?

SAM

Fine.

NATHAN

If we can make it. I don’t know about you but I can’t see.

NICK

Now’s not the time for that kind of talk Nathan. Where’s the bottle?

NATHAN

In my bag.

NICK

Take a drink and pass it to me. You still got that cocaine?

Sam and Jess look at each other in fear and clasp hands.

INT. MOTEL FRONT DESK - NIGHT

A motel FRONT DESK AGENT is reading a book at his desk. He looks up and outside. Jess’s car pulls into the lot swerving. It comes to a sudden stop not within any parking lines. Nick gets out of the car and into the rain and bolts inside.

NICK

Hey, do you guys take rooms by the hour?

FRONT DESK AGENT

Not normally sir. We’re not that kind of motel.

NICK

What? Well can I pay for a room just for a few hours? I don’t care how many beds. I just need this rain to die down before I can drive to the city.

The front desk agent looks down at his computer. He smiles and looks back up at Nick.

FRONT DESK AGENT

It looks like you have to pay for the whole night sir. Like I said,

we’re not that kind of motel.

NICK

What the fuck motel is that? Jesus, how much for the whole night?

FRONT DESK AGENT

It’s only 35 a night.

NICK

That’ll work. I’ll take one room for one night.

Nick runs back to the car. Jess, Sam and Nathan pile out and run inside. Nick grabs his backpack and puts it on. He slightly stumbles as he closes the car door. He runs to the front desk.

NICK

Ok, where’s our room?

FRONT DESK AGENT

Number 6, here’s your key. And how will you be paying for this sir?

Nick grabs $40 out of his wallet and slaps it on the counter.

NICK

Let’s all just get to the room asap.

FRONT DESK AGENT

Let me know if you need anything sir. Although we have power, our TV’s and phones aren’t working.

NICK

I just need four walls, a bed and a roof, thank you.

They all rush to the room. Everyone is relieved when they’re inside. Nathan’s throws up outside of the door.

NATHAN

Fuck this storm!

SAM

Yeah the storm’s the problem here.

NICK

Shut the fuck up Sam, I don’t need it.

SAM

If only you didn’t have that fucking gun.

NICK

What was that?

NATHAN

Don’t push him Sam. Chill Nick.

NICK

Only for you Nathan, not for Sam.

JESS

What is really going on here guys? Are we really on the run? Or are you guys just way too fucked up?

NICK

Of course we’re fucked up but yes we’re on the run.

JESS

What about my car then, are people going to look for it?

NICK

There was nobody there. Plus, it was dark as shit anybody left couldn’t have seen your car.

Nick lays down on the bed.

JESS

Dan knows my car.

NICK

Dan’s a dumbass.

JESS

That doesn’t mean shit, Nick. He knows that we’re the only people still on the west side of town. What do you think he’s going to do when you don’t show up for work?

NICK

I’m not going to worry about Dan ok? But, now that you say it. I am going to hide your car from the highway.

JESS

Well right now it’s not obvious that I’m a victim and not a suspect.

NICK

Trust me, you are a victim. Nathan how much liquor do we have left?

Nathan looks at the vodka bottle, it’s almost gone. He pulls out a bottle half full of whiskey.

NATHAN

Not much but enough for the night.

SAM

Didn’t we stop here because you’re both too fucked up to drive?

NICK

No, we stopped because this storm was making it too hard to see.

JESS

I can drive in this storm.

NICK

You’re not driving Jess. We’re going to hide out here for a little while until I can get us to the city. Nathan where’s the cocaine?

Nathan hands Nick the cocaine. Nick and Nathan each take a bump.

NICK

Jess, do you have a tarp in your car?

JESS

No, why?

NICK

I’m going to move your car.

JESS

Why?

NICK

Just stay here. Nathan?

NATHAN

Yeah?

NICK

I’m going to give you the gun.

Nick hands Nathan the gun.

NICK

I can trust you with these two fine young ladies right?

Nick looks out the door into the rain. He runs to the front desk.

INT. MOTEL FRONT DESK - NIGHT

NICK

Hey Front Desk!

FRONT DESK AGENT

Yes, sir?

NICK

I do need something from you. I need a tarp.

FRONT DESK AGENT

Ha. Ummm. You can maybe find one at the local gas station.

NICK

You don’t have anything here?

FRONT DESK AGENT

I’m not sure if I can help you there. There is a general store about 10 miles down and a gas station less than a mile from here.

NICK

You think I can make it in this rain?

FRONT DESK AGENT

I don’t think it’s the rain you have to worry about sir, I think it’s you. Aren’t you a little too wet to drive if you know what I’m saying?

Nick looks at him strongly.

NICK

Oh, I know what you’re saying. Well fuckin’, where can I move my car so it’s not seen from the highway?

FRONT DESK AGENT

If that’s all you need to do, you can park in the back lot next to me.

NICK

Thank you, sir. Finally, some real help.

FRONT DESK AGENT

Anytime sir.

Nick runs outside in the rain.

The Front Desk Agent stares at him as he runs outside.

FRONT DESK AGENT

What a piece of work.

INT. MOTEL ROOM – NIGHT

Sam and Jess are sitting on the bed. Nathan is pacing the room holding the gun.

SAM

Just sit down and explain to us what’s going on Nathan.

NATHAN

It’s not that easy. I don’t really know what happened. It all started last night. Maybe even before that, I don’t know. I’m not sure if I never knew or if I’ve forgotten. Everything is a blur.

JESS

Well start backwards then. What happened an hour ago?

NATHAN

Somebody got shot.

JESS

I know it was Chris. Is he dead?

NATHAN

I don’t want to say who it was and yes I’m pretty sure they’re dead.

SAM

Fucking tell us Nathan!

NATHAN

Ok! Nick shot Chris.

JESS

What about Tyler?

NATHAN

(pacing)

No he didn’t shoot Tyler. I can’t

say anymore. The less you guys know the better. All I know is my life is fucked and people are dead and it’s my fault! I didn’t kill anybody but I might as well have! Nick has been controlling me for years!

JESS

Ok just calm down. Take a seat.

NATHAN

I can’t. I’m too fucked up to stop. I’m bailing. I’m on the run right now. It wasn’t my idea to bring you both along. I’ve just been following Nick’s lead. I’m an idiot.

SAM

It’s ok Nathan. We’re not mad at you.

Nathan takes another drink from the vodka. He calms for a second and sits down in a chair and sets the gun on the table.

Sam gets up and rubs his back trying to comfort him.

NATHAN

I just want this all to be over.

SAM

It will be soon. Just keep Nick under control. He may have been controlling you but you can be in control from now on.

NATHAN

We’re both too far gone. The drugs have control now.

Nick walks bursts in the door from the rain.

NICK

Holy shit. You really think you

can drive in this shit, Jess? It’s gotten worse out there.

JESS

Yes, I do.

NICK

Well you’re not going to.

Nick grabs the gun off the table.

NICK

Sit down on the bed Sam. I’m going to go over some rules.

Sam sits down on the bed next to Jess.

SAM

What are the rules Lord Nick?

NICK

I like that. Lord Nick and Duke Nathan. Ha. What do you think of that Nathan?

NATHAN

It is kind of catchy.

Sam gives Nathan a look. Nathan smirks.

NICK

Ok, rule number one. Nathan and I are going to finish off the cocaine before we go anywhere.

JESS

That’s a terrible rule number o…(cut off)

NICK

Rule number two! You girls don’t have a say in shit!

SAM

What about Na…(cut off)

NICK

In fact, Sam and Jess can only speak when spoken to! Understood?

JESS

You’re driving my car.

NICK

Because I have a gun.

JESS

I thought we weren’t hostages.

NICK

Well you are for now.

SAM

What?

NICK

Rule number three. Nobody leaves the room unless I say otherwise.

NATHAN

What about me?

NICK

You can do whatever you want Nathan, just as long as I say it’s cool.

JESS

You’re free to do what he tells you Nathan.

NICK

I don’t think anyone was speaking to you Jess.

JESS

Fuck off.

NICK

I’m not playing around Jess! I don’t want you to get hurt.

JESS

Then put down the gun. Do I look like I’m trying to run?

Nick puts the gun in his waist. He grabs the bottle of vodka and takes a drink. He hands the bottle to Nathan.

NICK

Take a drink Nathan.

NATHAN

I don’t want to right now.

NICK

Well then do a line. I need you awake.

Nathan looks at Sam guiltily. Nick sees this.

NICK

What is Sam trying to convince you to sober up?

NATHAN

No.

NICK

Well you’re past that point anyway. Let’s do a line.

NATHAN

Ok.

NICK

That’s what I’m talking about buddy. Your birthday is not over! Jess, thank you by the way. I know you won’t run away.

JESS

Why don’t you just let me

drive you guys to the city? You can get as fucked up as you want. I’ll get you into a nice hotel room. I’ll give fake names; this can all be over in an hour.

NICK

That does sound tempting.

NATHAN

That does sound like a good idea actually.

NICK

No. We’re staying here. I made my mind up about that already. If I keep changing my mind, I’ll get lost in my decisions.

SAM

I think you’re already pretty lost, Nick.

Nick pulls out the gun.

NICK

God damnit Sam! Shut the fuck up!

SAM

Sorry!

Nick slowly sets the gun on the table while staring at Sam. Nathan lines up the cocaine. The bag is now running low.

JESS

You guys don’t seem to have much left.

NICK

Jess? Don’t speak.

Nick and Nathan do a line. They both stand up and begin pacing. The gun is sitting on the table.

NATHAN

So what now?

NICK

We wait. We should be good in an hour or so. Once again, we just have to make it a little longer.

NATHAN

We’re going to be crashed out in an hour.

NICK

No, I’m staying up until I feel it’s a good time to leave.

NATHAN

Why don’t we just tell the girls the truth?

JESS

What truth?

NICK

Not now!

NATHAN

They’re going to find out at some point!

NICK

Just keep your mouth shut.

JESS

You really shoul…(cut off)

NICK

Shut up Jess!

NATHAN

I don’t think there’s going to be any calming down anymore!

We’re not going to last much longer and you know it.

NICK

Fuck it. I killed Tyler Jess. But it was an accident!

JESS

What!? You better be just talking high right now.

Jess stands up and takes a step towards Nick.

NICK

Yeah, he’s dead. He’s curled up in our shower. Along with Nathan’s friend. He started asking questions and I got crazy.

Jess takes a leap forward and attempts to attack Nick. Nick grabs her hands and pulls her in close to him in a bear hug.

JESS

Got fucking crazy?!

Nathan grabs the gun off the table but doesn’t point it at anyone.

NICK

It was all an accident! Now stop fighting.

Jess struggles and Nick pushes her back onto the bed.

NATHAN

Do you want to hear the full story?

Sam grabs Jess to comfort her.

SAM

Don’t you fucking touch her again, Nick.

NICK

Or what Sam? Nathan give me the gun.

Nathan steps back and puts it in his waist.

NATHAN

I think I’m going to hold on to it for a while.

NICK

Oh really? Are you in charge now? Are you the good guy and I’m the bad guy?

NATHAN

Yeah, I’m not going to shoot anybody. You might though.

NICK

You’re right I might.

NATHAN

Why? These girls didn’t do anything. In fact, nobody has! You’re the one who’s crazy!

NICK

I had legitimate reasoning. I don’t want to go to jail! I don’t want you to go to jail!

NATHAN

So you’d rather kill your friends!

NICK

Yes!

NATHAN

You’re a bad person Nick.

NICK

Maybe I am.

Nathan points the gun at Nick.

NICK

We’ve already been through this Nathan. You’re not going to shoot me. Even if you would there’s no need to. I’m calm. I didn’t hit Jess. Everyone is safe.

Nathan lowers the gun.

NATHAN

You’re right. We just need to make it a few more hours and we’re home free. I’m a bad person too.

SAM

No you’re not Nathan.

NATHAN

Yes, I am Sam! I chose the path of ignorance and now I’m going to pay for my sins.

NICK

The Titanic is at the bottom of the ocean now.

JESS

I hate you so much Nick.

NATHAN

I should’ve just called the cops this morning.

NICK

There’s no choice in dwelling on the past anymore. I have an idea. Let’s all take shots. I’ll empty the gun and we’ll just play games until the end of the night.

Nathan tries to unload the gun but can’t figure it out.

Nick grabs the gun. The gun has one bullet left in the chamber. Nick turns the gun upside down and the bullet falls on the floor. Jess picks up the bullet.

Nick sets the gun down next to the vodka bottle. He drinks the last of the vodka. Nathan grabs the whiskey and pours some into a glass on the table.

NATHAN

Just a few more hours and we’re home free Nick.

NICK

Girls?

JESS

I’m not drinking.

NICK

I don’t need a gun to hurt you Jess.

SAM

You’re a monster.

NICK

Sam? Please.

NATHAN

Don’t make them drink. We need somebody sober.

JESS

I will take something to eat though.

INT. MOTEL FRONT DESK– NIGHT

NICK

Do you have anything to eat here? A snack machine or something?

FRONT DESK AGENT

Yes, right outside.

NICK

Oh yeah, I saw it earlier.

FRONT DESK AGENT

Is everything alright with your stay?

NICK

I think so sir. I think so.

EXT. MOTEL - NIGHT

Nick walks outside to use the snack machine. As he stares at the machine he starts to wobble from intoxication. He stops before putting any money in the machine.

He goes around to the back of the motel. He looks at Jess’s car and then gets inside. He searches the car looking for something.

He finds as plastic knife. He pokes it into the back seat and it breaks in half.

INT. MOTEL ROOM - NIGHT

Nick opens the door holding a bag of chips. Jess points the gun at him.

JESS

Give me the car keys Nick.

NICK

I should have fucking known.

JESS

Now Nick!

Nick throws her the keys.

NICK

I know you’d never shoot me baby.

JESS

Shut the fuck up! We’re leaving. I think you guys can handle yourselves from here. Come on Sam.

SAM

Come with us Nathan.

NATHAN

I’m sorry.

NICK

You’re sorry? How did you let Jess get the fucking gun Nathan?

Jess and Sam walk out the door.

Nick looks at Nathan with a dark look.

Nathan takes a drink of whiskey.

NATHAN

I don’t know what happened. It was so quick.

Nick grabs the empty bottle of vodka. He then runs outside and up to Jess who is looking for her car.

NATHAN

Hey wait a minute Nick!

Jess is in the parking lot looking around.

JESS

Where’s my fucking car?

Nick suddenly smashes the bottle over her head. She drops to the ground dropping the gun and the keys.

NATHAN

No!

Nick grabs Sam and the gun.

SAM

(Shrieking)

How could you do that! You love her!

NICK

Just pick up the keys Sam and hand them to me.

She picks them up.

NICK

Now go and get Nathan to help you get her out of the rain.

Nick walks in to the Front Desk and points the gun at the front desk agent.

NICK

I surely hope you didn’t call anyone.

FRONT DESK AGENT

I didn’t I swear.

NICK

Prove it to me.

FRONT DESK AGENT

Our phones are out and you can have my cell phone.

NICK

Wow, I really like you. That was a perfect answer.

FRONT DESK AGENT

I’ve seen a lot at this motel.

NICK

Well I’m glad I’m not the only crazy one to stay here. I’ll tell you what. You need to leave, and either you come back with some liquor and cocaine, or don’t come back at all.

FRONT DESK AGENT

Ok you have a deal.

Nathan and Sam are carrying Jess back to the room. Nick runs over to open their motel room door for them.

INT. MOTEL ROOM – NIGHT

SAM

You’ve really gone full maniac now.

NICK

I had to do it. She tried to escape.

Nathan and Sam lay Jess sideways on the bed.

Nathan lays down on the floor exhausted.

NATHAN

I’m giving up Nick.

SAM

Get up Nathan.

NICK

She’s not dead Nathan.

NATHAN

You’ve said that before.

SAM

She needs a hospital Nick!

NICK

She should have thought of that before she tried to run!

NATHAN

FUuucCK!

NICK

Wake up Nathan, where’s the cocaine?

NATHAN

I think we’re out.

Nathan leans up.

Sam runs out the door.

NICK

Where do you think you’re going? There’s no one at the front desk!

INT. FRONT DESK - NIGHT

Sam runs up to the front desk. She tries to use the phone. There’s no dial tone. She slams it.

INT. MOTEL ROOM - NIGHT

Nick looks at the very last of the cocaine.

NICK

There’s still enough for us each to do one more bump. You need it Nathan. I need you, Jess needs you, Sam needs you!

Nathan sticks his finger in the bag and snorts what he can. Nick does the same.

Nicks stares at the empty bag. He then looks at Jess.

Nathan starts to wobble as he tries to stand up.

Sam bursts back into the room.

SAM

For God’s sake Nick call an ambulance.

NICK

If I would have been willing to do something like that, I wouldn’t have hit her in the first place!

He points the gun at her.

NICK

I will use this bullet on you.

Nathan sits back down in the chair. He takes a giant drink from the whiskey bottle.

SAM

Nathan!

NATHAN

It’s all over.

Nathan leans over and passes out. Nick slaps him. Nathan stays passed out.

NICK

Well isn’t this a bitch? I guess it’s just going to be me and you for a while now Sam.

Nick grabs the whiskey bottle and takes a drink. He gets comfortable.

NICK

Sit down Sam and please don’t say anything.

Sam sits on the bed next to Jess.

NICK

We’re just going to wait this out. Me and You.

SAM

Think about what you’re doing.

NICK

I am thinking Sam.

SAM

Not clearly.

NICK

As clear as I need to be.

SAM

You’ve killed your friends!

NICK

I did what I felt was right.

SAM

How could you feel any of this is right? If anyone could help you it’s the friends you’re hurting!

NICK

Listen Sam, I’ll think about all of my sins when I’m safe in the city! Since you’re the only friend I have awake right now, I’m hoping you can help me do that.

SAM

And what if I don’t do that Nick? Are you just going to kill me like your other “friends”? I’m the last person you want to be with right now.

NICK

That’s right.

SAM

And who’s fault is that?

NICK

Mine.

SAM

Why’s that?

NICK

Stop talking Sam and let me rest.

SAM

How can you possibly think everything is fine right now?

NICK

Shut up!

SAM

God damn you.

Nick starts eating the snacks he got from earlier.

NICK

Do you want any of these?

SAM

I’m not hungry.

NICK

I’m not really hungry either.

Nick throws the bag and takes another drink of whiskey.

NICK

If you’re lucky I’ll pass out just like Nathan.

SAM

I’m counting on it.

NICK

I don’t see it happening though.

Sam adjusts Jess and checks her pulse.

SAM

She’s alive but people don’t stay knocked out this long. If we don’t get her help she’s going to have permanent problems.

NICK

I got rid of all our cell phones.

SAM

What a smart idea.

NICK

None of this would have happened if she hadn’t of left me for Tyler’s dumb ass.

SAM

Is that why you killed him?

NICK

I never meant to kill him!

SAM

But you’re glad you did.

NICK

I am now, yes, Sam.

SAM

You’re a psycho. You have no guilt or shame.

NICK

You’re starting to make me mad again.

SAM

I’m sorry, I’m not trying to make you mad.

NICK

Well then don’t call me psycho! Tell me a joke or something.

SAM

I don’t know any jokes.

NICK

Then tell me a story.

SAM

How about I just don’t talk.

NICK

That’s fine too.

Nick stands up to look outside. The rain is still coming down strong. Nick starts to wobble and lose his balance trying to sit back down.

SAM

I’ve got a good story for you. Once upon a time, a nice guy and his funny friend got jobs at a resort. It was fun, for a while. Then one of those guys decided to become an asshole. A jealous drug addicted asshole. He tried to bring his friends down to his level. He succeeded for the most part, and those he couldn’t bring down with him to his sinful layer, he would abuse, or hurt, or kill like a coward. Do you know this story Nick?

NICK

I think I have an idea.

SAM

One day, that guy had to make a choice, to lie and deceive, or to tell the truth. Which choice do you think he made?

Nick leans forward.

NICK

The right one.

Sam stands up and slaps Nick in the face.

NICK

You fucking bitch. Sit down.

Sam sits down. Nick sets the gun on a table.

NICK

I’ve got a story for you. A good story. A story about Tyler.

FADE TO WHITE

FADE IN:

EXT. FRONT OF CITY BAR - NIGHT.

Tyler sits on a curb sweating. He’s 18 years old and looks it. He looks at his watch. It’s 10:00pm. He has an old cell phone and a backpack. He looks inside the backpack. It has only cash inside. Approx. ten thousand USD.

The cell phone beeps.

TXT MSG:

Enter. Wait 30 minutes for a drink.

Tyler stands up off the curb. He walks across the street to the bar he’s been watching.

INT. CITY BAR – NIGHT

The bar is small and filled with only men. These are young men but not as young as Tyler. As soon as he takes a seat at the bar two men come from the dance floor sit in the empty stools beside him. One to his left and the other to his right.

YOUNG MAN ONE

You’re very lucky.

YOUNG MAN TWO

I think he’s dreamy.

YOUNG MAN ONE

Do you know why you’re lucky?

TYLER

No…why?

YOUNG MAN ONE

Because you’re not from around here.

TYLER

What makes you say that?

The man smiles at Tyler and then turns to the bartender.

YOUNG MAN ONE

Hey Billy, martini for my new friend.

TYLER

I have to wait a little bit longer before I can drink.

YOUNG MAN TWO

Can I have your cell phone?

TYLER

I’m sorry, why?

YOUNG MAN TWO

No speaky.

The second young man grabs the cell phone out of Tyler’s pocket.

YOUNG MAN TWO

I misspoke, I meant to say, Wait 30 minutes after the drink.”

TYLER

Wait, what?

Tyler begins to stand up but the man to his right sits him back down.

YOUNG MAN TWO

You’re in our hands now hun. You

have nothing to worry about.

Tyler is then handed his martini. The bartender then takes a vile from his shirt pocket and very carefully puts one drop into his drink. The man to Tyler’s right then breaks Tyler’s cell phone in half.

Tyler stares at the martini. He takes a deep breath and looks at the bartender.

BARTENDER

All of it son.

Tyler drinks the whole drink.

The music is loud. Tyler doesn’t notice the music. His anxiety has hit a peak. He wants to puke but he can’t. He tries to stay calm.

TYLER

So…so when does it begin?

The bartender smiles.

Tyler rushes away and pounds open the front door of the bar.

EXT. FRONT OF CITY BAR – NIGHT

TYLER

Does anyone have a cigarette?

Nobody is outside. Tyler runs back to the curb he sat on earlier before.

TYLER

(to himself)

Inhale…exhale.

Suddenly he notices the two men from inside are beside him again as if appearing out of nowhere.

YOUNG MAN ONE

It’s all in your head.

CUT TO:

Tyler is put into the trunk of a car.

CUT TO:

Tyler is sat onto a couch by the two young men.

Tyler looks forward in a trance. Two women dip paper sheets into Tupperware containers while naked. Tyler’s eyes are almost completely black.

FADE TO:

Tyler wakes up under a bridge with a vest on. Full sheets of acid are duct taped to the inside of the vest. Tyler looks around breathing heavily.

CUT TO:

INT. MOTEL ROOM – PRESENT - NIGHT

SAM

You’re a liar.

NICK

Am I? Why don’t you check my bag? I’ve always known where he’s kept all his cash.

SAM

So, you really are that low.

Nick slaps Sam and grabs her throat with both hands. He squeezes her throat tight, choking her.

NICK

I’m not going to waste my last bullet on your dumb ass. I’m not going to knock you out either. I’m

just going to strangle you to death.

Sam struggles to get free. Suddenly we see the gun taken off the table and pointed to Nick’s head.

BLAM.

Nick drops to the ground, dead. Blood splatters onto Sam’s face.

Jess is holding the gun. She drops it on the ground. Her face is also dripping with blood from her cut open head wound.

Nathan awakes in a daze. Sam is speechless.

Jess grabs Nick’s backpack. She looks inside and sees all of Tyler’s cash, approx. $100,000 USD.

Jess looks out the door. The rain has now come to a drizzle. The parking lot is empty.

JESS

Let’s go Sam. Grab the car keys.

Sam covers her mouth and closes her eyes as she grabs the keys out of Nick’s pocket.

Nathan drops to the floor and begins crawling towards Nick distraught with tears in his eyes.

NATHAN

What just happened?

JESS

Good bye Nathan.

Jess and Sam begin to walk out the door. Nathan grabs and holds Nick’s dead body.

NATHAN

You’re both just going to take the money and leave me alone here?

Sam turns back towards Nathan.

SAM

I’m sorry you had such a shitty birthday, Nathan.

Jess throws a stack of cash at Nathan and closes the door.

Nathan sits quietly alone.

EXT. HIGHWAY – NIGHT

Nathan is standing with his thumb up hitchhiking. A car pulls over. Nathan gets in.

INT. HIGHWAY CAR - NIGHT

HIGHWAY DRIVER

Woah. How long you been out on this highway? It’s shitty as hell out here.

NATHAN

Not long.

HIGHWAY DRIVER

Well damn man, where you headed?

NATHAN

Can you just get me to the city?

HIGHWAY DRIVER

Ok man I think I can do that.

Nathan leans back to get comfortable.

NATHAN

Thank you.

HIGHWAY DRIVER

You’re not some kind of serial killer are you? I’m just kidding, but, hey are you ok? You don’t look too good. Hey you’re not on the run are you? It’s ok if you are, I’m a good g…(fades into background noise)

Nathan drowns out what the driver says to him.
