My name is Kacey. I am chief editor of the school newspaper in Middleton High School. I am an average girl that is not so popular and not so easily recognizable. My hair is plain straight black and goes below my chest. My eyes are ocean blue and nothing near almond eyes. Of course, being on the school newspaper I am wearing glasses.
Today is my first day in school and I feel like a nervous wreck. It’s my senior year now that’s how I became the chief editor. Before I leave though and move on to Harvard I am to select a new chief editor. This is tradition. Tradition is important.
When I reached my biology class I moved over to sit in the middle of the classroom near the window. I looked out and could tell the last day of summer has gone by. It was still sunny but there was a hint of a cold breeze outside. I pulled my shrug over my shoulders tighter and pushed my glasses up to the crook of my nose.
I was too consumed in looking outside and daydreaming when someone tapped me on the shoulder. I turned around to see who it was.
“Hey Cy! I missed you!” Caitlin, my best friend hugged me. I smiled back.
“What do you mean? You have seen me almost every day during summer break.” I laughed at her silliness.
“I know but you are my best friend and every day I will miss you! Don’t you understand?! We are leaving to go to college next year and I won’t be seeing you so much now!” She exclaimed and set her books next to me.
“I know I’m going to miss you so much but we promise to write to each other, remember?” I asked her. I dreaded leaving. I wanted to stay in my hometown.
“I remember.” She smiled sheepishly. Caitlin is more in fashion than I. I do not know how we became friends but I absolutely adore her. Today she wore a gray sweater dress that went above her knees. Her leggings were black as her boots were brown and went as high as her knee. She also wore a black belt around her waist to hit it off. Now, in comparing her to me I wore khaki shorts with a white blouse. My hair was pulled back and tied into a ponytail.
“Have you been accepted?” I asked her.
“Oh my god! Yes I have! I forgot to tell you last night. My parents took me out celebrating last night. I’m going to University of Virginia!”
“That’s great! I’m happy for you!” I grinned.
“Did you get accepted? Oh wait, never mind. I know you did.” She chuckled at her own joke. “Oh my god Cy! Look who is in our biology class!” She grabbed my arm. I looked up to see who had caught Caitlin’s attention this year and saw that it was Aaron’s friend, James.
“He’s so H.O.T!” She whispered loudly into my ear. She began fixing her hair. I couldn’t help but let out a soft giggle. He must of notice because his gaze fell on her and he grinned devilishly at her.
James was a soccer player and he played on the offense team. He has long curly blonde hair that makes him look boyish. A lot of girls’ trails after him trying to get his attention. He was standing the door way wearing his soccer shirt and athlete shorts.
“James!” His friend slapped him from behind. He laughed and turned around switching his attention.
“What’s up man?” James asked as they winked at a bunch of girls that giggled past them.
“Boys, take your seat…” Mr. Adam warned with a smile. James headed to sit in front of Caitlin. Mr. Adam set his book down on his desk.
I started taking out my notebook ready to take notes like always when Mr. Adam cleared his throat. I looked up from my book bag. To Mr. Adam’s left there was my middle school crush. He was tall, built, and sexy.
“Mr. Johnson, can you explain to the class why you were late on the first day of school?” Mr. Adam leaned against the desk waiting.
Aaron chuckled lightly. “Ah, well today I saw a unicorn on the street. I simply could not run him…”
“That’s it, Mr. Johnson. I do not want to see you late again, understood?” Mr. Adam said and opened his grading book.
“Completely, sir.” Aaron moved to sit in front of me. Oh god! Why here? Anywhere but here!
He set his books on the table and leaned back in his chair making him closer to my table. Oh damn him! I tried to ignore him throughout the whole class period but my mind keeps wondering back to him. When the class period was over I grabbed my books quickly and shot out of my chair.
“Cy! Wait up!” Caitlin grabbed her bag and follow me out. “What the hell is wrong with you?”
“I can’t believe he sat in front of me.” I said feeling annoyed.
“Well…yeah…he didn’t do anything though.” She pointed out. “I mean…you know…he didn’t look at you or touch you…or did it on purpose. In fact, it looked like you were invisible to him.” Caitlin said the truth.
“Oh thanks for making me feel even better.” I covered my face with my English textbook.
“No Cy! I am not trying to make you feel bad. All I am saying it is okay if he is sitting in front of you. He’s harmless.” She smiled at me sweetly. I forced a smile back.
“I guess your right. I shouldn’t let him get to me.” I said softly and walked to class but on my way there I saw Aaron with Melissa. She wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him in for a kiss. They were leaning against the locker. He kissed her softly on the lips. I diverted my gaze and looked else where but bumped into Damon.
“Oh! I’m sorry!” My books fell to the floor and I picked it up now feeling myself heated with embarrassment. “I am truly sorry. I did not think that you know…that I…I’m so clumsy.”
“It’s ok.” Damon spoke and smiled at me as he picked up my books. Damon was someone I talked to him once in a while but not so much no more we sort of went our separate ways ever since sophomore year. “How have you been, Kacey?” He asked.
“I’ve been doing great until now.” I gave a little embarrassed laughed. In the corner of my eyes I can see that Aaron was looking at me. Great, now I’m more embarrassed. Way to start a new year in high school for your senior year, Cy I thought to myself.
Damon chuckled and said, “Well, it doesn’t matter. You can bump into me all you want.” He winked at me. “You better get going or you are going to be late for class.”
I nodded and started walking away when I heard someone cough behind me. I turned to see Aaron still looking at me.
