This is a poem I wrote during the holiday season, thinking about how not everyone will be celebrating.

a boy raised by the streets

face decorated purple

by his drunken father's angry brush strokes

not yet a man

but too old to find solace

in his battered, broken mother's arms

alone

a young one plays inside the bowels

of a derelict crackhouse

among the busted dreams

of screaming junkies

eyes turned away from the rawness of the scene

afraid

a girl wanders the city

thin face drawn

eyes bloodshot and ringed with black

belly big with the promise of new life

a child named Hopelessness

to be born of hatred and despair

ashamed

when one looks at the world

through foggy urban goggles

every rainbow

is muddy
