The Testament of William Clive
This is the testament of William Clive.
My story dates back to a distant aeon. Impossible, you think, but I can assure you I've been alive for ever, well, at least for so long, I've lost count. I don't look a day over 40 though. The year was 2012, and the president of the United States was Caesar Veidt. You've never heard of him, and I don't blame you. I was sent into outer space alone, on what was the longest mission of my time. After two years, I lost all contact with Earth for reasons to me still unknown, and after I ran out of fuel, my ship was doomed to roam the universe for eternity, there seemed to be no hope for me. My ship than floated for so long, the only things that kept me alive were a 20 year supply of nourishment, books, and films from my native planet that kept me from complete madness. When food eventually ran out, there was nothing for me to do but jump out of my capsule and put an end to my mysery. It was at that moment that I saw a spaceship, not too distant from my own, it was incredibly big, and didn't look like anything I'd ever seen before. I learnt it was no mirage as I was picked up by the foreign object. There I was, brought inside a thing from out of this world, occupied by strange-looking primaeval creatures, a form of life so different from our own I would fail to describe. They spoke a language completely new to me, and it was incredibly difficult for me to get an actual response. They gave me a few pills which restored my health and made me feel like a whole new person, I had almost forgotten all those years alone, years that would have driven anyone insane. I managed to give them the coordinates to my old planet, and I couldn't believe my eyes when saw it once more, so blue and familiar. I was finally going home, I thought. Alas, I was wrong. I'd aged only 20 years, but eons had passed on the planet once called Earth, and it wasn't a futuristic view, on the contrary, it was a wasteland. People looked primitive, and lived in caves. Probably a natural disaster, or more likely a devastating atomic explosion, had completely wiped out the human race as I had left it, and now it was starting all over again before my very eyes. The latter hypothesis was supported by the abnormal levels of radioactivity we found in many parts of the globe. I was now able to communicate telepathically with the foreign creatures who helped me find the way home, and I managed to convince them to clone my DNA. That way, that primitive form of life was soon replaced by an intelligent race, capable of building a civilization similar to the one I remembered. With some help from the foreign creatures and myself, the human race was finally developing. The all-new youth of planet Earth was still too primitive for me, that's why I decided to follow my saviors on their trek. During that time, I learnt that there are an infinite number of species in the universe, and an infinite number of worlds, each one inhabited by a different kind of intelligent race, some of them even show similar traits. I've found out many species were created by the same type of creatures, who left their DNA on various planets so that life could evolve under such different atmospheric conditions. After what for me were roughly 6 months, I asked them to drop me back on Earth. It is now the year 2012 all over again, and everything is quite like it was when I left the first time. I am finally home. The reason I'm writing this testament is to raise awareness. Who knows how many times something like this already happened? I'm not so presumptuous to assume that this is the first time the human race has risen from the ashes of an older one. Sadly, I can’t promise you that it won’t happen again, maybe even sooner than we think.
