Driving cross country on a family vacation

we passed so many cows my Mom said,

"Those eyes. It's like they know something

we don't know."

"Mom," I thought, "the cow is one of the stupidest

animals on the face of the earth."

But then I remembered aren't cows sacred

in India?

Out joyriding with friends some years later

On a back country road we paused to steal

a "Slippery When Wet" sign

when we felt the eyes of hundreds of  cows

on the hills around us

standing still chewing and staring

Ken said, "We'll have to kill all of them,"

he looked suspiciously both ways,

"witnesses."

Again years later I was staring into

a sandy haired girl's brown eyes

my heart sinking in their depth

when she said, "My brother calls me

cow eyes."

And I thought No Wonder

cows are sacred animals,

in India.
