ACUTE RESPIRATORY DISTRESS SYNDROME can be a life threating condition causing lung failure. ACUTE RESPIRATORY DISTRESS SYNDROME tends to inflame the alveoli which makes them fill with liquid and then collapse. When the alveoli collapses the gas exchange stops and then the body loses oxygen. The patient will then need mechanical ventilation to help with breathing ordered by physicians, physicians assistants, and nurses practioners.

Many conditions can cause ACUTE RESPIRATORY DISTRESS SYNDROME from major trauma to a blood borne infections. It can show up within twenty four to forty eight hours from an illness or injury. The duration of the syndrome can vary from patient to patient and so can the recovery time. Each patient has their own specific needs.

There is no specific treatment at this time for ADULT RESPIRTORY DISTRESS SYNDROME. Most patients will be put in an intensive care unit with mechanical ventilation to help them breathe easier. Medications are used to treat the underlying cause of the trauma or infection.
