ALZHEIMERS DISEASE is not considered a disorder of old age. The symptoms that are most common are a decline in thinking and physical functions. The patient may also have personality changes as well as memory loss. Medications that are being used today to treat the disorder are Aricept, Exelon, and a new one Nemenda.

Clinical trials are being done now on a new medication that will treat the disease. There will be over a hundred patients on the trial. They will be tested for a year and a half to see if the medication will show improvement. In the small trials it showed a twenty five percent improvement in memory and physical functions.

Stem cell transplants will not help ALZHEIMERS DISEASE because it is caused by a chemical imblalance in the brain. The cell transplants at this time will help other neurological disorders such as PARKINSONS DISEASE. The ALZHEIMERS ASSOCIATION can give help to family members who have a loved one with the disorder.
