OSTEOARTHRITIS is a degenerative joint disease that mainly shows up in the hips and knees. The cartilage of the joints deteriorate. It's cause is still unknown at this time but it seems to be related to the aging process. Both men and women are treated for this disease. Men seem to get the joint problems earlier in life, while women get it after they go through menopause.

Most patients will complain of joint stiffness with aching, deep pain after exercise. As the disease progresses they can have joint enlargement, reduced range of motion, a grating sensation, and tenderness at the joint site. Patients will find it harder to walk and function throughout the day.

The treatment can consist of articular steriod injections, musclie relaxants, and anti-inflammatory medications. Physicians, Physician Assistants, and Nurse Practioners may also prescribe physical therapy which may include moist heat for pain, massage therapy, strengthening exercises. In severe cases surgery will be done to help ease the pain. It is a manageable disease.
