SCIATICA can start as pain in the lower back that goes down to one of the extremities. It usually occurs as a result of lumbar disk disease and it can be felt in the lower extremities and back of the thigh. About forty percent of the united states population will experience this condition one time in their lives.

Sometimes this condition can appear gradually or abruptly with symptoms of sharp shooting pain along the back of the thigh. Any kind of movement can cause a lot of pain. The skin along the affected nerve can be sensitive in some cases.

There are many treatments that physicians, physicians assistants, and nurses practioners use to treat this condition they may include muscle relaxants, narcotic analgesics, nonsteriodal anti-inflammatories medications and activity restrictions. If the condition does not resolve with the current treatments the patient should be re-evaluated by physicians, physicians assistants, and nurses practioners.
