Can't let the tears fall.

No emotion, better keep that poker face,

Gotta be tough, can’t show any weakness.

Don’t show your hand, keep it a secret,

Can’t let the tears fall, cause boys don’t cry.

You’re not a real man, if you’re too emotional,

Cause you’re only allowed to feel anger.

Follow these rules to a T, they’re not optional,

Are you are man, or are you a fucking bitch?

Be Atlas, and hold the world upon your shoulders,

The burden is placed on you, won’t be any reinforcements

Take control of the situation, you’re the apex predator,

Ready to defend at all times, nothing but a soldier.

Fucking get over it, real men don’t get depressed,

Wrist cutter, you better cover up those scars.

Forgot to mention, you’d better be sex obsessed,

Be in the mood, ready to go, at the drop of a hat.

Look in the mirror, you’re weak and you’re spineless,

You should be ashamed of yourself, you’re a failure.

Wanting help, but no one’s gonna be your saviour,

Pull yourself up by the bootstraps, and be a fucking man.

No emotion, better keep that poker face,

Gotta be tough, can’t show any weakness.

Don’t show your hand, keep it a secret,

Can’t let the tears fall, cause boys don’t cry.

Exactly we've got all emotions and it shouldn't be an issue to show our emotions, since we aren't robots yet. Thanks for reading!

This is fantastic, MW! I am Hispanic, and this is a common teaching that I do not support. My son is 5 years old and I would never make him feel badly about crying if he needs to. Excellent!

I can agree with you there, I'm mixed race (black/white) and certainly crying wasn't looked at positively, most of the men in my family show little emotion. Thanks for reading :)

Yeah, in spite of all the spouting off about holding in emotions, it's still generally frowned upon for a man to show emotions, especially of sorrow or depression. Real men do cry because real men feel pain. Excellent, MW.

Exactly, it's still frowned upon for men to show emotions other than anger. That goes doubly so for depression, as much as people will say it's not the case anymore, it's still very much stigmatized in society. Thank you for reading, your support is appreciated.

I just love this! Young men need to hear this. Especially since our society glamourizes tough men. Men who never shed a tear. Men who are brawny emotionless shells of people It takes a real man to flesh himself out and express his emotions. Thank you for breaking the mold. Great work on this, Mel!
Blessings, Joy

That's the reason Ii decided to write this, because I experienced this when I was growing up. Emotional expression was not accepted, except in certain circumstances, and you were expected to not show anything at all. The men in my family are all stoic, quiet and show little emotion. For the longest time I bottled everything up, but now I realize emotional expression is what makes you a real man, like what you said and other comments have said. Thank you for reading, I really appreciate the support :)

Christy Writes

Toxic masculinity harms men and women alike.
Teaching a man to bottle up his feelings, be a Don Juan who collects women like trophies, be strong and aggressive... is very harmful in the short and long term. How many cases of anorexia, body dysmorphia and "bigorexia" get swept under the rug because it's expected of men to have and maintain a muscular figure? Why do some men believe women owe them sex? And why do so many men feel pressured to have sex or feel embarrassed about having low or no sex drives? Why is suicide the third leading cause of death among adult men?
There's a saying that goes "Men should only cry when their parents die" which is bullshit honestly. Crying is a natural reaction to pain. You can totally cry if you're heartbroken, or if you're hurt, or even after you've watched a sad movie. Crying doesn't mean you're weak, it means your body is reacting to the pain you're experiencing.
I really, really wish we could reach a time where we stop limiting people to their gender stereotypes and actually let them be human. We've existed for such a long time, it's really shocking how we're still so behind in terms of understanding the human psyche and respecting each other for what we fundamentally are: people with different backgrounds, perspectives, feelings, and personalities.

I can't disagree with anything that you've said, and it was the source of inspiration for this poem in particular. You're not told how to deal with your emotions properly, because it's much easier to bottle them up inside. Though that causes a lot of problems down the line, and that's what many people will find out. Thanks for reading and for commenting, it's quite appreciated :)
