In the story, ''Opening Act'', Amanda, an insecure girl, goes through many emotional problems that upset her. Throughout the story, Amanda faces heart breaking relationship problems, and family issues. In the end, Amanda learns her lesson and finds a solution to one of her problems.

At the start of the story, Amanda finds out that Jeff broke up with her for Marie McCall, another girl, through an upsetting phone call. Amanda deals with her heartbreak by writing poetry, a talent she hid from the world. She used poetry to express her feelings, good or bad. Amanda was devastated, she worked all night on her secretive poetry. For her, she expressed herself well through her touching poems.

When Amanda wakes up and her notebook is nowhere to be found, she gets worried. She finds Amanda's mother with it and gets angry because her privacy was violated. Amanda's mom had read her notebook without her permission. All of Amanda's thoughts and feelings were in that notebook, and Amanda's mom didn't respect her privacy enough to read the book. Amanda's bond with her mother  was ruined, and she became distanced with her family, no one understood her.

One day, Amanda's mother performs a concert and invites her daughter to a special performance. Her mom performed Amanda's poem, and introduced it by stating that Amanda is talented. Amanda became furious for exposing her poem to the audience, but then forgave her mother. In other words, once Amanda called the song ''our song'', she implied that she forgave her mom and dedicated it to her mother and herself. Their bond was once again recovered, and they were finally a happy family.

Amanda learned that you shouldn't be afraid to show the world your talent, and you should appreciate when someone compliments your ability to write. Amanda had been through a lot, but in the end, she learned her lesson. She started off with a horrible bond between her mother, and finished with a good bond.
