In the old days of the circus, odd and strange things were put on exhibit in the sideshows. They had things like two headed snakes, electric people and all sorts of weird things. Today I’m going to tell you a story about something my grandmother saw at a circus that will make your hair stand on end and give you Goosebumps. It’s the story of e mysterious mushroom people.
When grandmother was 7 years old, just about your age, she went to her first circus. It was a very small circus that traveled around by truck. She lived in a very small town where not many exciting thins happen, so everyone was eager to see the circus when it came to town one summer.
The day it arrived, dark clouds formed and the wind started to blow. It blew and blew and blew until there were dust devils everywhere. It was so windy and dusty; no one really noticed when the first truck pulled into the vacant lot across the street from the grocery store. By the time the wind stopped so the people could go outside again, there was a big tent set up there right in the middle of town. Everyone wondered how the circus people could possibly have put that tent up in the wind. There was something very strange about this circus.
Right outside the big tent there was a smaller tent with a sign that said: ENTER HERE AND YOU WILL NEVER BE THE SAME AGAIN. Only 10 cents!
Inside the tent it was very dark, and grandmother went inside to have a tiny peek. It was very, very, cold inside the tent, so cold it gave her Goosebumps and she could see her breath in the cold air. It must have been 90ºF outside on that summer day. How did it get that cold in the tent? That was way before air conditioning. Why do you think that tent was so cold?
It was so dark; she had to feel her way around, when she saw a tiny light at one end of the tent, so she went toward it slowly. By this time, she was so nervous, all she wanted to do was leave, but she was a brave young girl, so she went forward. When she got to the light, she saw the strangest thing she had ever seen in her life.
There were mushrooms there in the fain light, but they weren’t normal everyday mushrooms. They were huge and they were moving around and growing right in front of her eyes. And they had eyes. Worst of all they were making noises like popping and moaning. One of them looked right at her and she thought it said how do you do? They were so hot that it must have been 100ºF there right by them.
All of a sudden the man who had been outside the tent was right behind her. He said in a whisper, “Read the sign.” The sign said that these mushroom men were inhabitants of a secret island that only a few people knew about, off the coast of Madagascar. Not only were they mushrooms but they were also cannibals. Well that was enough for grandmother. When another one of them started coming growing really fast in her direction, rolling its beady little eyes, she took off, never bothering to see what else was inside the Mysteries of the World Tent. As far as we know, nobody has ever seen a mushroom man again.
