Afghanistan

By M. E. Riddle

Afghanistan, fall into sand

To the end of the Earth

Where the Eagle lands

And slag heaps rise

Into monkey-face clouds.

Venturing into mountains

Pushing rock-disappearing wash

The emptiness is alive

In running rag hats

Grey granite surprise.

Intruders procreate bedlam

Abysininnian gold

Black handsome Islam

Forged railway stone

Traveled backwards in time.

Knives are unsheathed

Markets weigh pennies

To a fine drawn peoples

Harsh to the world

Brutal to many.
