My Friend

By M. E. Riddle

Just a thought

Before you go

When you were with me

You were alone.

Inside you a suitcase

Containing my life

Look in your eyes

You were my wife.

I hope you are happy

Free from confusion

When leaving I drowned

The rough edges softened.

I’ve ran from tears

And all my fears

In a dream

Sans self-esteem.

Lost in the crowd

My silent friend

Except in my mind

Until the end.
