Sleep

By M. E. Riddle

Room dark, quiet, cool

Mattress soft, warm, firm

Pillows keep tabs on the clock

The mental chatter continues to talk.

No eat, no drink

No naps, no nightcaps

Lie in your warm bath

Attempt to relax.

Wake up-remember the screams

The ones’ that you heard

Trapped in your dreams.

Morning arrives

You begin your day

It’s a price we pay

It’s just that way.
