Ugly American

By M. E. Riddle

I am soldier

Siege engineer

Dying at War Bonnet Creek

And Wounded Knee.

Early history sheds

A reign of lead

Blue bugle fall back

The men attacked.

Fighting dying everyman

No cowards bedlam

Black hills are sacred

Blood red the land.

The faces of Presidents

Mutely stand witness

To a harsh history

Lost in the distance.
