Sitting beside her dying friend, Mary Anthony ignores the pouring rain that falls on top of her. Blood splattered along the grey sidewalk slowly washes away, mixing in with the rain water as it flows downhill towards the storm drain.

Tears fill her eyes as she looks into her friend's eyes. The once bright green color now a dull, faded greenish-grey.

"Promise me," the dying girl mutters quietly against the loud pattering rain, "promise me that you'll tell my dad I love him."

"Why are you talking like that?" Mary asks, clutching her friend's hand in her own. "You'll make it, help is on it's way."

Painfully shaking her head, the dying girl looks up into the sky.

"Tell him I don't blame him," she gasps, "for my mother's death."

"Please," Mary cries, her tears mixing with the drops of rain. "Please hold on."

Watching as the rain washes away the blood, Mary listens for the sound of sirens. Nothing. Only the sound of rain hitting the cold, stone walkway.

"And Mary?"

"I'm sorry about our fight. I should have known something was wrong."

"Don't blame yourself. I should have told you instead of yelling."

Smiling softly, the girl stares into Mary's crystal blue eyes.

"Sisters forever right?" She asks, her smile strained.

"Sisters forever." Mary echoes.

Breathing quietly, the tension in the girl's hand slackens, her grip nonexistent. Her chest ceases to move any more as she exhales one last time.

"I'm so sorry," Mary cries in anguish. "Please don't go! Please no! No!"

Suddenly there are men surrounding Mary, their paramedic uniforms wet from the rain.

"We'll take care of her," one of them tells Mary, his face kind. "But you need to get out of this rain."

Standing, Mary walks with the paramedic to the ambulance vehicle; her thoughts focused on one thing. Who could have done this to a twelve year old girl?
