(Continuation of Far From Eden Part 4) A story about a young man in the service, that has everyday challenges of life, job (as a Army Infantry Man) and emotions thrust upon him.

Based on a true story

I paced the floor beside my bunk that evening searching for ideas of how to survive the next few weeks with my new team, but the only thing that was coming to me was the sand and dust I was kicking up with my boots. I was going home in about a month for my two week leave, so I don't have that much longer to have to worry about this, but i know it will be waiting for me when I get back. Until then, I decided to lay down and just chill for the rest of the night. Tomorrows mail day, a day every soldier looks forward to. Letters are something you can hold onto when you cant make a phone call home right away. My internet is inaccessible at the moment anyway, so this will have to do for now, because times like these, a letter feels like a call home.

Today is the day..finally. While Sgt. Myles was handing out hand fulls of letters to everyone, I tapped my fingers on my knee, anxiously awaiting his turn around my section of the seating in the chow hall. When he finally made his way to me he handed me my letters that i quickly snatched from his hand and ran to my tent to read them. It was only one, and it was from my sister, but it meant the world to me knowing i received a letter. I opened it with haste, and re-read it about six times.

Dear Eric, Helloooooooooooooooo big brother =) sorry it has taken me like, FOREVER to write you a letter ,but every time I go around to write you one mom has already been to the post office, so I'll just email you the letter. writing one he old fashioned way is so much more fun don’t you think? Anyway, how are you over there? Are you getting enough sleep? Are you staying out of trouble? I can’t wait until you come and visit! We miss you soo much. Mom and Joseph are doing good, moms working too hard as usual, and Joseph is just doing his thing. I’m good, schools starting soon..ICK!! But I would rather be there with my friends than at home hahaha. Write back! I love and miss you. Love your sister, Anne

I smiled, folded it up and put it in my shirt, and laid back down on the bunk closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep. I had a dream were i was together with my family, we were at my grand mamas house..my cousins were swimming, grandaddy and my uncles were watching NASCAR, my mom was talking to my grand mama and aunts in the kitchen while they were all chipping in helping make dinner, I was sitting there with Joseph, we were both talking to Richard about snow skiing and his latest adventures in the mountains. I glanced out the window and saw Anne attempting to jump off the diving bored while her cousin tackled her into the pool. I woke up right before we were about to say the blessing for the meal. It was Matthews coming to summon me to meet my new team. I got up, wiped the sleep from my eyes and pulled on my boots.

Outside it was still dark. by the position of the moon I could tell it was around 5:30am. He was guiding me to a pretty decent sized building. it was too dark to tell but I think it was the office where all the "higher authority" guys work at. I don't know. When Matthews opened the door the light blinded me for a few seconds. When I regained my correct vision I was greeted by 4 guys.

One was a ginger, Pvt. Daniels, and the leader was a huge man, Caucasian, shaved head, the works. His name was Commander Kennan. I don't think his facial expression changed the whole time I was there, but it was obvious he wasn't that keen to having someone new on the team either. The two other guys, Pvt. Davis and Pvt. Reynolds had their arms crossed with a shared expression of disdain. I gave a weak smile hoping I would get one in return. All of them sorta scowled, all except the ginger, Daniels. He was grinning ear to ear. Which kinda freaked me out but was relieved when i saw the ring on his left hand.

"This is your new team, Weinzierl," Matthews said " You will start your work with them at 0900hrs tomorrow morning."

I took a deep breath. "yes sir."

He left the room with me by myself with my new team. Kennan shook my hand, hard, might i add, and walked out the door. Davids and Reynolds followed, leaving me and Daniels alone. To break the awkward silence I asked,

"Dude whats wrong with those guys?"

Daniels, with his smile still plastered on his face, said

"Oh, don't worry about them, they are just upset Matthews re-assigned us a new partner so quickly."

"So quickly?"

"Yeah, after the whole thing with Williams...well, Kennan has not really been himself. The other two guys just follow whatever he does. Williams was Kennan's best friend, he blamed himself for what happened. He even said..."

I cut him off. "Who's Williams? What happened to him?" Daniels looked at me for a brief moment.

"They...they didn't tell you..did they? "No, they didn't. what happened?"

He looked around. "I better not tell you..if Kennan found out i told you..this is something you wanna take up with Matthews. He should have already told you anyway."

"Alright, thanks.." "Don't mention it...and one more thing" I was starting to walk away.

"When you ask Matthews about Williams, don't tell him I told you.." He looked some what worried.

"Why not?"

"just don't, okay"

"Okay man, I wont." I turned my back to him, leaving him there standing alone, made my way across the room, out the door, and into the rising sunlight.
