Soldier Coming Home

by Mike Burton

As I board the plane, I begin my journey on this long flight.

I look out the window and gaze upon a starry night.

As the flight takes way, I start to stir and somber;

restlessness takes over my body and I stare and ponder.

I have been gone, so long and far away;

wondering if you will recognize me, when I see you today.

I am so excited and scared all at the same time;

to steal this moment from me would be a crime.

It has been years, months, and even weeks;

since I gazed upon your perfect smile, eyes, and cheeks.

While away, thoughts of you filled my heart so deep,

Even on the nights I felt vulnerable and lonely, it helped me sleep.

Where I was, is no place for woman or child;

there the men are savages and are wild.

I seen things that would destroy the strongest of men;

during these tough times, my love for you grew times ten.

Now my tour is done and it is you I want to see;

we can build our lives together and finally be free.

The plane lands and comes to a stop;

at this very moment I feel my heart drop.

The engines are off and the locks open to the hatch bay;

Baby, I get out and run to you

I am home and here to stay.
