What do we see here...

What do we see here,

laying on the cold sand under the white moon alone with our thoughts?

Alone with a memory and a picture coming one after the other

Piled against the soot-covered horizon

taking shapes like ghosts of the wind

What do we see here, outside of what the wise men beat their heads on,

outside of what the poets cry for and the soldiers drive for

racing headlong to leave their skulls in the sun for—what do we see here?

Dreams in the dusk

Only dreams closing the day

To the gray things, the dark things,

The far, deep things of dreamland.

Laying here upon the cold sand

Dreams, only dreams in the dusk,

Only the old remembered pictures

Of lost days wrote in tears the heart’s loss.

Tears and loss and broken dreams

May we find your heart at dusk, under the white moon

laying on the cold sand alone with our thoughts.
