Independence Day

By Michael Dale Sipes, Jr.

Hope you have a great Independence Day! What don’t you mean 4th of July? That is what someone said to me after I sent him a message the other day wishing him in advance in the event I was not online. I then thought to myself, I too have rarely referred to the 4th of July by its appropriate name, Independence day. Cesare Pavese, the Italian poet and novelist once said, “We do not remember days, we remember moments”. Which may explain why a lot of people remember fireworks when they think of the 4th of July, but not the Declaration of Independence.  Many people have forgotten the meaning of the day just as they have Easter, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Labor Day, Halloween and so on. Just for those who have forgotten your elementary school history lesson the 4th of July or Independence Day is actually a celebration of the decree of the original thirteen American colonies forming a new nation, the United States of America, and no longer part of the British Empire. We celebrate the Declaration of Independence that was adopted on July 4, 1776. I specifically remember this holiday because I was born on 1976, a bicentennial baby. I know that most children, teens and many adults forget about the significance of the Declaration of Independence and almost regard the 4th of July as a separate event or holiday in which we celebrate America by watching fireworks and drinking. Well, there is a lot more to the 4th of July than fireworks, so if anyone has children or know of an absent minded adult, remind them of what happened on July 4th 1776 and how lucky we are to have gained our independence and formed a separate but united nation.
