Take your time

I was a volunteer in a nursing home
Playing cards with guys and painting toes
And whenever they’d talk I’d just look at them and smile
I remember they were old and couldn’t know much
And how they always walked with a hunch
No I’d never take their advice
but they would always say,
“Hey little princess don’t be in a hurry
Time has a way of flying by
Hey little lady put these days to memry
n hold them tight
Just take your time.”
Ten years down the road I was sitting in a coffee shop
Listening to some jazz and looking at the clock
My did time fly by
It’d been six years since I’d seen him last
I asked him how he’d been and he just laughed
“Oh life’s been… fine
But boy did it fly by.
“Ya”, I said, “huh”
And he replied
“Years ago I thought I had it all
A college scholarship playing ball
Now what do I have to show
A little league t and a broken toe
Man I wish I had
Just taken my time
A fews years later I got my little ones too
Their putting on a play at the zoo
Mines the elephant, huh when did she get so big?
Pretty soon she was going strong
dating different guys and it wouldn’t be long till her wedding day
She looked so beautiful all dressed in white
I am truly proud,
But wait now
“Hey little lady don’t be in a hurry
Time has a way of flying by
Hey little lady put these days to memory n hold them tight
Just take your time.”
And now I’m beginning to remember them days
Of innocence and pigtail braids
How I want them back
I didn’t hold on to those memories of slumber parties
Or the little laughs in my teenage years
oh I wish I had held tight and just taken my time
Years along the way it’s come the day
When I’m in a home like I’d
volunteer in
She’s playing cards with guys and painting toes
N Getting some advice from someone who knows
Will she ever know? How fast it goes?
So I’ll tell her…
“Hey little princess don’t be in a hurry
Time has a way of flying by
Hey little lady put these days to memory n hold them tight
Just take your time.”
I was once a girl like you I played cards too
And I’ve painted toes and gotten advice and trust me we know

How time goes by, how fast yet how slow.
