There isn't really a beginning or end to this. Why should there be? But I've tried to capture something.

He sat looking at her with fervent intensity. Shimmering eyes that seemed to vibrate with repressed emotion drawing her in. Suddenly she remembered to breath. A quick intake of breath, the sound breaking the moment as he quickly looked away.

“I’m sorry.” He whispered. “Why?” she said before the sound of his words had time to fade.

His eyes came back to her, a tense appeal in them. “You know why. I know why. But I can’t, don’t you see?”  He said in a fierce, quiet tone.  His mind started to race. “And how could I anyways? What would we do then?.. I’ve needed you since.. I’ve always needed you, and never knew until I met you. But I can’t. I just can’t.” He said. Then added after a pause in a distant breaking voice, “How often I’ve tried..”

Tears began to form in his eyes, as he quietly cursed himself. Looking away for a moment, he fought down emotion threatening to overwhelm him. When he came back he saw the same struggle mirrored in her face. God. He thought. But she’s beautiful. The urge to reach across the table and pull her to him ran forced him to shut his eyes as he shook with the struggle not to. If he just surrendered, just for a moment, he knew it would all be washed away. And the waves they both rode would drown them both.

Her hand covered his with a timid grace. They held on to one another for a moment and then let go.

“I’m sorry too.” She said, a sad smile in her voice. His eyes found her again, that fervent intensity back, as she continued, “Let’s go for a walk! I have to leave soon but I’ve time for that at least.” She came to her feet in one fluid motion, her own self-consciousness overcome with the desire to make the most out of their time. A smile came over her, and suddenly he forgot how to breath. He sat, stunned and silent, looking up at her. After a brief pause he smiled at her as well, standing up quickly, he gave her a short, fierce hug, and then wandered off with her by his side.
