The bed was shifted under the pillars with a prestigious canopy of Egyptian cotton. The finest of threads clothed the bed, like an Eskimo bracing the winds of the tundra, tossed carelessly off the side onto the mahogany wood floor. The rest of the room explains the night beforehand. The lamps that illuminated the room, so romantically, were complimented by the wine glasses spilled over onto the dresser. The table so elegantly draped, still has a salad fork chilled with the eerie disposition of something lost placed next to the cold steak that was cooked to almost perfection. The red box, the red mistake, still sits open on the table with the treasure of commitment being side swiped by the sunlight peaking from around the curtains.

The bathroom light turns on.

She walks in tip toeing, almost as if the marble floor is the Bering Sea iced over. The hair that was once voluminous is now nothing but clumps of unevenness. She brushes her teeth and walks out.

Grabbing her clothes off the floor she sees something in the man’s suit jacket, an envelope. She contemplates opening it.

She decides to.

She disregards the lip of the envelope and tears it from the side. Inside was a red card. The cursive of the writing on the card falls so fluently together that some words were hard to understand, but she got a majority of what was written sincerely by an Emily. She looks up at the bed. The man still sound asleep rolls over.

She picks her money up and heads out. The hotel hallway is empty. She gets onto the elevator pushing the L button.  She glances back at the red card, and says to herself “Happy Valentines Day”.
