CHAPTER 2:

THE AWAKENING:

CATHERINE:

That same night, just before dawn I decided to move on. I spoke to my parents and told them that I must leave. After discussing the matter privately, my parents agreed, knowing that the police would be notified shortly about Jenna’s disappearance and since she was last seen with me… You know what I mean- Anyway, as I was saying I was to leave the next day, with part of the “robed ones”, to start anew. First of all I had to change my identity, so I dyed my beautiful raven hair, blonde (UGH!) and with my powers, I managed to turn my eyes from their usual jade green to a deep blue, vowing to change them back as soon as I arrived at my destination.

After examining myself in the mirror trying unsuccessfully not to wince at the sight of my hair, I decided I was as ready as I’d ever be. Sighing dramatically I made my way downstairs. To my chagrin and surprise, everybody celebrated my new look, even my brothers. I managed to blush (huh! Me, a vampire, blush he he he…) and muttered a thank you under my breath. I was already packed and saying my goodbyes when a black van pulled up. Five minutes later I was walking out the door, the sun shining brightly in spite of the cold.

Sun? You might be wondering, yes sun, People tend to believe that us, vampires can be destroyed by fire and sunlight, but that is a load of crap, though the only one who couldn’t stand the sun or fire was the very first one of us, our father, the great Nosferatu and he was over 9000 yrs old! Hello!? go figure. Holy water? yeah right! Oh! And my personal favorite the-we’ll all be safe in the church! attitude, hilarious! And lame,( want to know something even funnier? I own a cross!- he he he!) News flash- if we want to walk into a church we can! (not that we ever do). Anyway, the only way we can be killed is by beheading and then destroying the head…. Um…Maybe I shouldn’t have said that, after all ,I know you all hate me by now, and I don’t want to give you any ideas…

Although despite the hatred you’re still here aren’t you? You still want to know what happens don’t you? Just like when you see a horror movie and you’re scared and maybe even terrified, yet you can’t seem to look away. Am I right? Of course I am! Well, let’s move along with the story shall we?….

I left for the country. It turned out to be a long, but interesting drive. I caught up on my gossip with two of the girls, Valerie and Joanne. It was interesting, but in a way, I wished I could be with adults, I mean I have been 16 now for 100 yrs! You do the math!..

Finally we arrived. The house was huge, beautifully constructed. It was covered by trees, a trail leading to a forest to my left. The perfect hiding place, I loved it! I walked towards the house, feeling happy even excited.

As soon as I get comfortable you’ll soon know why. And guess what? You’re not going to believe it!

JENNA:

I opened my eyes to total darkness, and immediately felt a shiver of fear run down my spine. The first thought that came to mind was that I was dead. Only when I moved my hands did I realize I was very much alive, but where? I tried lifting my head and bumped it against a hard surface. I put my hands up blindly trying to touch whatever was on top of me and then I tried shoving it to no avail, it wouldn’t budge an inch. I was getting antsy, a bit of claustrophobia washing over me. When I was about to try again, I heard movement above me and froze.

Suddenly there was a creaking noise and the darkness before me disappeared, I could see light overhead. I sat up realizing in horror where I had been trying to escape from .

A coffin! I was in a coffin, but why? What happened?….

I scrambled to get out and once on the ground a wave of nausea hit me like a ton of bricks. I inhaled deeply and looked around. I was in a chamber of some sort, all painted black, black curtains adorned the place. Moonlight poured weakly from a single window.

I then became aware of different things at once, first that I could hear like I have never been able to before, hearing voices from the outside as if they were standing in front of me; second, my eyesight had not only adjusted to the surrounding darkness, but I could see everything, even the smallest little details as if I had night vision goggles on. The third and most frightening thing of all, was that I was alive, yet I had no heartbeat. Immediately, as if seeing a film everything that had happened to me came rushing to my mind. I saw myself with Catherine, I saw myself at the mall reading the newspaper and trying to convince her to go with me to the cemetery.

Catherine…..I heard a low menacing growl and realized that it came from me. Just to think of her made me burn with anger, I felt a fury like never before. She had betrayed me. How dare she?…..After all that we had been through together and after the way my family and I had treated her. My family. As I thought of them tears welled up in my eyes.

I must not cry I told myself and brushed them away. White hot anger took a hold of me, thinking of how I had been deceived and when I thought of who or what Catherine really was.

I ran towards the door and without pausing to think pulled the handle and managed to rip it off its hinges! How did I- Then and there, still holding the door in my hand as if it weighed no more than a feather, I realized what had happened to me…. I was a vampire too. I just stood there dazed and confused at my discovery, too shocked at the moment to realize I should have known at once as soon as I found out I had no heartbeat….

Once I got over the initial shock, pure determination overcame me. I wanted and would get an explanation right now. I threw the door down with a crash and walked out.

Outside standing around a bonfire stood the robed figures I had seen at the cemetery that night. They had heard me sooner than expected and turned to face me. Suddenly I wasn’t as brave and determined as I thought. One of them, the leader I supposed tossed back his hood, letting his long platinum hair fall to his shoulders. He looked at me then and smiled, his Hazel eyes bright, his sharp fangs glistening under the moonlight.

Instinctively my hands went to my mouth and I realized that my fangs were there too, I sighed inwardly no doubt about it I was one of them. It was funny though I had been so obsessed by them and now that I was one I definitely wasn’t happy about it. “ Oh you will be in due time” The leader said. I just stared at him dumbly. He chuckled and seeing my expression decided to elaborate “ I just read your mind. “ He stated matter- of- factly as if it were normal. Well come to think of it, it was for him.

He waited for me to speak and seeing that I didn’t he introduced himself. “My dear Jenna, I am Julian, leader of those you call the -robed ones-.. Just one of the things he caught from reading my mind he explained. He grew serious and looking into my eyes said solemnly “Don’t worry Jenna, you will have your revenge in- “ Yes I know in due time.” I cut in. Nodding, he smiled.
