Morganne

“Morganne, darling, are you okay?” Her mother peeked into her room.

“Fine,” she replied. She rolled over so that her mother couldn’t see the tears in her eyes. She heard the door close softly. Christmas carols blared out from the radio downstairs and her younger sisters and cousins were shrieking and laughing. It was Christmas and everyone was happy. Everyone... Except her. She wasn’t happy. To tell the truth, she didn’t know what to feel anymore. All she knew was that, without Derek, she felt worthless. She was nothing. She was less than nothing. Christmas had always been her favourite time of the year, before... Before she lost Derek. Now she just wanted to take down the mistletoe. She didn’t want to think about that right now. Tears rolled down her cheeks as image after image and scene after scene of her and Derek flashed through her mind.

He used to turn up on her doorstep first thing on Christmas morning every year for the past four years they’d dated. She’d open the door and, unconsciously, smile. He’d kiss her gently, then greet her family. They’d have breakfast together, smiling and laughing, and then open their presents. Derek always gave her the most wonderful presents. The first year it was roses, the second it was a book she’d been wanting for a long time, the third a beautiful necklace, and the fourth... He’d given her a ring. A ring that promised her his love and future.

She reached out for the ring on her bedside table. When they broke up, she’d thrown it onto the floor. A few days later, she’d picked it up and it had never left her side ever since. It was scratched, imperfect, ruined, but still beautiful. Just like her relationship with Derek. She stared at the ring and her vision blurred with tears again. She willed herself not to cry, but her tear ducts, as well as her brain, refused to listen. All she could see was the ring and Derek.

The next morning she’d drive to his house. He would open the door and his eyes used to light up when he saw her. His family would be inside waiting for her to put up the lights with them. She’d go in and they would wait for his cousins. When his cousins arrived, they would all put up the lights together. He would stand beside her and occasionally kiss her, making goose bumps appear on her arms. Then they’d exchange presents. He always gave his mother sweaters because she used to complain that it was getting colder and colder. He would make them himself a few weeks before. Later on, she’d spend the night there. He would crush her against his chest, then kiss her neck softly, sending shivers down her spine.

Was he doing that to another girl now? Was he looking at her lovingly with those beautiful blue eyes? Was he hugging her tight, claiming that she needed warming up? Were they doing something more? Something that even she had never done with him? She didn’t know. He’d moved away after their break-up. To where? She didn’t know. Was he thinking about her right now? Was he missing her as much as she was missing him? She didn’t know either. She didn’t know anything about him anymore. She slipped the ring onto her finger and fresh tears welled up in her eyes. She curled up into a ball and cried her heart out. If only he knew how much she missed him... How much she loved him... If only he knew.

Derek

Derek stared out of the window. He didn’t know what he wanted to see, but the harsh, unrelenting white was definitely not it. A car drove nearer and nearer and he held his breath. It just drove on. It was almost amusing. If he hadn’t been feeling so empty and broken, he might have laughed at himself. He knew what it was that he wanted to see now. Morganne. Her beautiful blonde hair, her shining blue eyes, her soft lips... They were what had kept him going for the past four years. Tears spilled over onto the windowsill, unheeded.

What wouldn’t he give to have her ring the doorbell just one last time? To be able to open the door and see her beautiful smiling face. To put up the lights alongside her. To kiss her sneakily when no one was looking. To hold her slim frame against his muscular one and hear her breathless moans when he kissed her neck. To feel the warmth radiating off her body next to his while they slept.

Was she kissing another guy now? Was he receiving the thoughtful presents she always wrapped lovingly? Was he hugging her? Were they doing more than that?
Her eyes used to shine so bright whenever she saw him. Once, they were stargazing in his backyard. He’d told her that her eyes put the stars to shame, and he meant it with all his heart. She’d kissed him, then laid her head on his chest and wrapped her arms around him. That night was beautiful, and he would never forget it... Neither would he ever forget her. He looked at the photograph on his bedside table. A passerby had taken it. He looked good in the picture, and the scenery was breath-taking, but Morganne overshadowed them all. Her perfect eyes looked back at him. He’d torn the picture up after their break-up, then taped it back together. But the damage was irreversible. The line between him and Morganne was obvious. It separated them. He held the photograph close to his heart and cried. Sad, silent tears fell. He loved her. Always had, and always would. If only she knew.
