Dragon Quest

A millenia ago, a child was born whose name was Malcolm. Little did he know that he would go on to do great things in his life. What, I can’t say, for you will have to read on. Malcolm lived in King Arthur’s kingdom, Camelot. He was a strong, young boy with an ambitious desire to explore and adventure. Malcolm was filled with curiosity and energy, but was reserved and would rather stay at home and read a book than play with the other children. Since he could remember, he always had a deep infatuation with dragons; how they could breath fire and fly. He learned to hide his great interest with these scaled beasts because the public had a burning hate, and fear of dragons. These dragons had recently attacked the kingdom, and had been threatening the human population’s existence for the last 30 years. The assaults were progressively growing worse and worse, sometimes even dragons attacking each other. The invasions had forced the kingdom to train an enormous amount of knights and send them to battle. Tower radios and lights were installed, sophisticated codes were developed in an effort to communicate with the other kingdoms and inform each other of any dragon strikes.

As Malcolm had begun to mature and he became interested in knighthood. He began to dream of joining the cause to protect his loved ones against these terrors. He was 15, and becoming a knight was his life’s dream. He joined the King’s Royal Army as a squire and worked diligently, with the utmost attention to even the most menial jobs. He was soon recognized by his superiors as the squire to be relied upon and so was given increasing responsibilities. Moving up the ranks rapidly due to his rigorous work ethic, he soon (to no-one’s surprise) became a sergeant in the King’s Royal Army. The day finally came that Malcolm was to be honored with the title “Knight”. This would be the day the grueling years of meticulous training paid off, the day Malcolm was to become a knight. Before he was able to be saluted into knighthood, he had to prove himself worthy and defeat a fellow squire in a joust. As they arrived to the ceremony, the air was grim and filled with sorrow. The Kingdom of Quimper had been raided by the savage dragons of the North. Malcolm mounted his steed the crowd grew deathly silent. This was the moment they had been awaiting for a decades. The trumpet sounded and the two steeds charged. As Malcolm grew closer and closer to his opponent, he could feel his heart pounding in his ears. He suddenly felt a jolt as his opponent's lance hit his shield. The force of the impact caused his shield to break. He was thrown of the horse, and blacked out.

He awoke to the sound of fireworks going off and the crowd cheering. His opponent had succeeded at hurling him off his horse, and was now being knighted by King Arthur. Malcolm was filled with rage and sadness simultaneously. He got up and started running as fast as he could to his house. He opened his garage door, got his bike, and began riding into the countryside. As he snapped out of his mood, he realised night had already fallen. He found refuge in a cave and quickly fell asleep. He awoke to a heavy rumbling inside the cave. The stalagmites were shaking and the ground was moving when suddenly a dragon rose up from the ground! The dragon was 70 ft long, 20 ft tall and had a wingspan of 50 ft. Malcolm was both fascinated and scared at the same time, for he had loved dragons all his life. He called out to the dragon, “I come in peace!”. He in turn cocked his head and inspect Malcolm. He lowered his head, and to Malcolm’s surprise said, “Hop on”. Malcolm hesitantly did as the dragon said, and mounted him. The dragon flew out of the cave with agility, despite its enormous size. Up and up it flew until Malcolm could see the rising sun. “My name is Vetus” said he. “I have been expecting you for a while now. Your race has killed us off and have forced us to fight back. This is why we need you to help us convince your race that we are friendly, and will not harm you. We have a great famine and needed food to thrive.” Malcolm was confused. All his life he had been told the dragons were terrible creatures and they should be killed, and now Vetus was telling him the humans were the bad guys.

Malcolm thought a lot about this, and when Vetus was making the descent he spoke, “This troubles me for I don’t know if the people will accept you as good”. Malcolm was torn, he didn’t know what to believe. Malcolm dismounted the dragon, and stood there thinking. Maybe the people would side with the dragons if they saw the beasts had intentions. With Vetus’ approval, he was to ride the dragon all the way to the village. They rested another night and decided to ride to see the king in the morning. As the the two approached the kingdoms outer walls, the air horn sounded and all the villagers rushed into the main castle. The defense systems were powered up and loaded, and soldiers flooded the walls when Malcolm raised a white cloth, and yelled, “We come in peace!”. With the soldiers stunned, but holding their weapons, they landed in the large courtyard by the great hall. The king, surrounded by his most trusted knights called out in fear, “Do not destroy us! I can offer you anything if you spare us.” Malcolm called out“I am not here to do you of any harm or to frighten you” “I have come to tell you that the dragons, that you so despise of, are of no threat to you” As soon as that was said the crowd grew silent. “These creatures are in a great danger, there has been a great famine and now they have been pushed to the brink of extinction. If humans and dragons were able to collaborate we could do so much.” The king seemed to considered this and spoke, “It is the people’s choice”.

The crowd talked amongst themselves and came to a conclusion. It seemed to be a resounding yes. The word was spread amongst the land at lightning speed. More dragons were summoned and the people learned to tame, and ride them. Over the course of the next few centuries together man, and dragon accomplished many things through the actions of one man. He was the Dragonborn, his name was Malcolm.
