With the impeachment of Trump, the very thing I've been worried about almost since the beginning's about to come to pass, the tearing asunder of our democracy is at hand. Already, it's been bad, but it's about to get much worse, with the for dug in and the against dug in. But, it had to be done. The next few months will test the strength of our democracy like never before, and if it's still standing after a verdict has been reached, one thing is perfectly clear, we'll never be the same. I once called this the New Civil War, with words instead of bullets, but the against are so against it, it won't surprise me in the least if violence is used if the verdict goes against them. We've never faced what's about to happen: yes the Nixon impeachment was bad, but it never felt like this, like if the verdict went against him he'd incite violence among his supporters.

The egotistical president we have now doesn't care about what's good for the country, he only cares about himself, and will say anything, do anything to save and keep himself in power. As bad as Nixon was, he still followed the rule of law. Trump speaks against his own Justice Department when it serves his needs, not giving a damn what effect it'll have on the country: the long-term damage it'll cause, which is true with most things he Tweets. He only thinks in the short-term, HIS short term benefit, which is all he's capable of. And, if he loses the election, I can't see him doing what he should do, what every president in our history has done, step aside gracefully. Our first president, George Washington, if he was as self-centered as our current one had so wished, he could have been king for life because up until the revolution, that's all the world knew, royalty, and he was immensely popular. But, being the true patriot he was, knew that kings and queens were exactly what we'd just fought a war to get rid of. Trump only cares about himself, because that's all he's capable of. I'm glad the House Democrats are impeaching him, but only because it has to be done. As of now, I don't think it stands a chance of passing the Senate. Hope I'm wrong about that. I don't find anything celebratory about it, it's a tragedy for America.
