My Best Friend Tasha

We found you just running loose one summer’s day

We took you up to the announcer at the parade; “Say

does anyone own this dog?” The announcer said,

“Is anyone missing a dog? It’d be a shame, she looks well-fed,

to have to take her to the pound.”

We waited a while, and nobody came around

to claim her, and we looked at each other, and knew

what we had to do. So that’s how you

came to live with us, and looking back on it,

I wouldn’t trade one minute, not one bit

of the time we had together

The way you looked chasing a Frisbee, or strained at your tether

when you knew we were going for a ride in the car

Your passing has left a void in my heart, and a scar

on my soul that will never heal

Even now, when I think of you, I feel

blue; but I’ll always cherish the time that we had

I just think of your face, when I’m up upset or sad
