Pretend

The lonely eyes stared in disbelief

at the horror they were beholding

All the nightmares and grief

like a heavy weight they were building

The shadows all held their secrets,

no matter how he strained to see

They all were pressing down, closer to grief,

closer to ruin, closer to the edge was he

The daggers of his thoughts ripping through his flesh

The memories he could see so clearly,

as he sunk lower and lower; defiantly he tried his best,

but couldn’t find the piece of mind that he wanted dearly

He pretends to smile; he pretends to breath

He pretends everything is okay, and pretends to get along

Pretends that he’s in control, pretends everything he says

isn’t all pretend; he pretends his smile isn’t gone
