Oh, the pain of a bad review,

basically they can take the wind out of you

A piece you wrote with such lofty intent,

now they're telling you to go get bent

Oh, some hide their contempt behind flowery words,

but they may as well cut your heart out with a sword

I don't get it, why do some people go out of their way

to basically tell you suck, to play

Siskel and Ebert on something you wrote,

the literary version of stepping on your throat,

so that you choke on the cutting words that they use;

they're like a dagger; plunged into your imagination; do

people realize what damage to the self-esteem,

for some people who only dream

of being told that someone appreciates their creative vision

Now, I've long ago grown away from the indecision,

the second guessing, the wondering

why the criticism feels like a living thing

Sure, it still doesn't feel very nice

to be told your vision is just an unlucky roll of the creative dice,

but I'm tough enough now to withstand it,

when someone basically calls what you wrote a piece of shit,

but some others' aren't; they take it to heart,

those words tearing your writing apart
