As the sharp, cold wind hits his face, he quickly buries it in his coat. The sun can barely be seen through the grey sky and he struggles to keep his footing on the ice covered sidewalk. As the wind passes he lifts his head and looks out across the white coated landscape of the neighborhood. The road, barely plowed. The naked trees lightly touching each others branches. The houses buried under the cold white blanket. He thinks about the families inside, warm and happy watching TV together by the fire. Probably drinking tea or coffee and relaxing. Everyone is too lazy to get dressed so they're all in their pajamas and taking their time. A snow plow pushes snow onto the sidewalk ahead of him down the avenue with a trail of white dust as it drives by. He reaches for his box of cigarettes in his coat pocket with his frozen hand. His gloves are thin and soaked from the snow. His hand is practically numb as he struggles to get his second to last cigarette out of the box. After succeeding he grabs his lighter from his other pocket and soon finds himself with another challenge. He sticks the cigarette in his mouth and cups his hand around it to block the cold wind as he tries flicking his Bic. He tries wiggling his toes but can no longer can feel his feet that are in his worn sneakers that he wrapped with old towels. His knees have been shaking since the beginning of September and the New Year just started.

A New Year, he thinks to himself as his cigarette finally catches flame. He inhales and looks up at the colorless sky. A new year means another shot. Another year of nothing or another chance for a miracle? He looks back down and grabs his rolled up sleeping bag that he kept all his belongings in. As he's about to set off hears the door of house close a few feet behind him. He looks back to see a man walking in his direction with a metal container in his hand. He moves over to let him pass but the man stops next to him and hands him the thin metal container. "Its hot so take these" says the man smiling and handing him some gloves. He's speechless and almost loses his cigarette from his jaw dropping.

"God Bless You" are the only words he can say as his eyes begin to tear up.

"Yea you're welcome" says the man.

As he turns away to go back into the house he says, "Happy New Year" and walks away. He puts on the new gloves and he feels the cold melt away as the wool inside warms his hands. He sips the coffee and burns his tongue. He had missed that feeling for a long time.
