On a moonless night in Baghdad

soldiers await a bed

yearn to be warm and fed

it’s almost over, “they” said.

In their crowded barracks

brogans hang from racks

their bags unpacked

in duffle bag sacks.

Soldier's eyes pondering

they move slowly; wandering

nightmares of dying

wounded are sighing.

Troop’s faces are weary

think of their dead; get teary

car bomb killings make them dreary

the sound of pain is eerie.

Parents and siblings; prayers they recite

think of their children and want to fight

go to bed wondering their loved ones plight

reluctantly close their eyes until the new light.
