My simple yet complex view on where the whole world is going on. An important read.

Happiness. Sadly, a term used too flippantly nowadays. But let’s face it, we all want it. “John just cooked dinner, best fiancé ever couldn’t be happier right now”. Pipe down. Hiding your medioka life behind a page filled with carefully chosen graphics, of course where the eyeliner is on point and pout at its sweetest. Happiness is to do with fulfilment. A term too precious to be measured by with how many likes you can get on a photo. The only way to fully embrace this, in my experience, is travel. Horizons. Something that the majority of the office clones nowadays need to drastically and desperately broaden. The endless nights with cramming that last minute paperwork in, working till dusk... now it’s time. Your time.

The saddening fact is, the majority of us get too engrossed with living that we actually forget to live. The labour system is triggering an epidemic of clones. Are you going to hang around and let them turn you into one of their clones? Machines. That’s what we are to them. Straight from school, to university and straight on to work for them until our bones will no longer allow us. I say no. Don’t let them take away your spirit. Our individuality has gone. The glint in the eye when someone talks about something they feel so passionate about, I have stopped seeing this. It’s turned into the bags under them of people restrained by the boundaries of endless stress and pressure to make ends meet.

We were not born into this world to work, we were born to live. Work is simply a key to living. But if you never get the chance to put that key in the padlock, if you never make that last dent for it to fit then I ask you, what is the point? Experience the pure exhilaration of falling 300 ft from an airplane into the South American wilderness not knowing if a bloodthirsty tribe awaits your landing, help change the life of the little girl that cries of thirst on the floor of her shack in the slum from sheer lack of the most basic element on earth, watch the first few shaky steps as a baby elephant embarks on its adventure into the world. Nothing is certain in life, don’t put off that around the world trip for a few years when tomorrow you could be flattened dead by a bus, then what would you have to tell the angels?

“You had your chance to travel, now it’s too late” what a load of bull. Excuse my French. Not only can full time work have an effect on your physical health, in a lot of cases the effect on the mental health is the most disastrous and irreversible of all. Last year 250,000 adults were added to the mental health register with work-related stress causes. A number that simply screams disgrace. Sometimes, we all get into a state where we simply can’t see the wood for the trees. But for onlookers the wood is very clear. The first step in discovering this wood is understanding our mind and why the trees were blocking the beauty. That’s what I did and my mind was unlocked to a whole new way of thinking. A whole new world.

So, whether you’re an office worker with a nine to five job faxing documents, a vet saving the lives of animals, or simply stitching up jeans in a warehouse, taking a break will not do you any harm. So why are you still sat there? You should be religiously searching for flights to the furthest part of Hong Kong by now.

Narrow mindedness, a personal pet hate. Cultural awareness is something that many disregard. But its vitality has never been as prominent as it is in this century. We get so caught up in what exists only in our small spheres that we forget there are a million different worlds out there. Part of being human, is exploring this. We were not made to stay in one place for the rest of our lives. The world is your oyster! As my grandma used to say- those who can fly should fly, those who can sing should sing and those who can wander should wander. We’re a single dent on the fingerprint of the universe. This awareness plays the biggest part, in my opinion, of being a rounded individual. Respect is a customary part of humanity.

Adventure. Does this word not excite you immensely? Well it should do. If not, there you go, proof that your spark has been lost. It needs to be reignited. If you ask me, the best adventures begin with a lost map… Spontaneity. Not everything has to be planned. Tomorrow you could book a flight to Peru and start a life there in the jungle. It really is that simple. I’m not saying the jungles for everyone. What I’m trying to say is that your boundaries are endless. The sooner you realise this happier you’ll become.

Our own mental functions are rotting from the restraints and mind holds society has over us. We’re our own worst enemy. Cliché but oh so true. Mental health. A touchy subject. What fills with me with indescribable frustration is that people don’t realise they have the power to free themselves. A fact that brings tears to my soul. However, the most vital part is making the decision to do so. Depression, anxiety, self-harm. Denial. The only roadblock in your journey to euphoria. Society says it’s wrong to approach a person mentally ill. I’ve experienced first-hand the isolation and imprisonment you feel. Like the weight of a constant rain- filled black cloud over you, impossible to lift with the simple ‘cheer up’ attitude.

You have to get out. Get out of your suffocating bubble. Get into nature. As did I. A two week pilgrimage surviving only with water born of the hills loins and friendship trekking the mountains of North Spain. It truly was nothing short of a miracle. Try looking at your problems through a different type of spectacles, not the same distorted set you did before. Be the onlooker to your snow globe and I promise you your life will change forever. Concealing your problems, let me make clear is the worst possible thing you can do. Suppression and seclusion are never the answer. Your friends that surround you are there to help. . Madness is inevitable if you keep all those emotions in one organism. All that stress, all those hormones. Biologically, you shall break. Either that or live a life of complete misery.  Unfortunately, we live in a world where everyone runs over to sign our cast, but if you tell people you’re depressed everyone runs the opposite way. This ignorance has created a world that doesn’t understand mental health.
