This is a poem I wrote for english about "where I'm from"

I am from the land of 10,000 lakes.
From Target and Heggies Pizza.
From the mega mall,
The Mall of America
(which my grandfather helped build)
From the purple people eaters.

I am from the yard out back, full of tools and cars.
The smell of grease, oil, and gas.
The smell of the wood stove, heating up the shop in the winter.

I am from the never ending corn fields,
And sweet and sour rhubarb.

I am from demolition derbies.
Strong willed and stubborn.
From Bill and Denise.
The Palmer’s and the Bullivant’s

I am from large informal gatherings at meal time,
And the fighting of who’s cleaning up afterwards.

From being broken hearted by my uncle calling me pretty,
After I was told his jokingly calling me ugly was his way of
I love you. (I was four)
From Eh’s to uff-da’s, and yeah you betcha’s common in conversation.

I am from believers who believe you don’t have to
Go to church every Sunday to prove your faith.
Especially on derby day.

I am from Princeton, MN.
From where rivers, creeks, and lakes are filled with
Fresh water fish and singing loons, and fields filled with frolicking deer.
From home made strawberry rhubarb jam, mud cakes, and prime rib.

From the son of the very first female
State demolition derby champion,
Two years running.
The red and yellow number two.
And the man who fixed up her cars.
(I love & miss you grandma)

I am from a shoebox of ticket stubs, derby wristbands, and plane tickets.
From bells of places I’ve been.
The pictures that could only capture so much.
And memories that will never be forgotten.

God I hate writing poetry for school, it always feels so empty to me. Which is why I can say with full certainty that you are a better poet than I, I liked this piece, the blatant straightfowardness of it is actually subdued with great feeling and imagery. Well done.
