The Bell Tower
“No! Please Don’t!” A small blond girl stood at the edge of a tall building. Her masked assailant sat across from her. With his black gloved hands, he held her shoulder so tight she thought he was making a hole in her skin.
“Please, I don’t know what I did.” She begged him not to drop her. She looked over her shoulder to the street below. It was dark out and the sidewalk was empty. She stared back at the mans bright green eyes, because that’s all she could see beyond his black ski mask. She glanced over his shoulder, at the large golden object that hung from the ceiling of the tall tower of the private school, that she was attending. It felt like yesterday that it was her first day in this torturing school. She wasn’t welcomed at all being of poor decent. And now, her life was going to end on this tower with the golden bell almost glowing, she could see her fear stricken reflection, and the back of the man who still held her shoulder strong. She began to loose consciousness and finally she felt his grip loosen. Before she knew it she was falling. It was almost in slow motion as her arms wailed in the air and as she fell the man lifted his ski mask and revelation hit her just as she hit the ground. She could heard the tolling of the bell.
“How could you.” She managed to squeak out before her breath left her body and she closed her eyes.
The Next Morning
“Ugh, another day in Paradise.” Adriana Taylor sighed as she pulled into her parking space at her
highly important school. It had been two months of her senior year since she had begun to attend Hidden Valley Private Academy. Those two months were probably the worst two months of her life. She had met one good person at least. Her friend Claudia Allen was like her. They both didn’t have rich family’s the only reason they were in this school was because their grades were high, too high for public school. Most of the students at this school were “Children of the Stars”. Or that’s what Claudia and her called them. That seemed to be the only thing the two of them had in common though. While Adriana was shorter and a bit rounder, with long brown hair and chocolate brown eyes, she didn’t always grab the attention of boys. Claudia on the other hand was tall blond, skinny, and had a pair of bright blue eyes that could give a man a heart attack just by looking at him. They were still the closest of friends. But even with her friend by her side, she still hated this place more than she hated public school. But either way she was going to be made fun of. When she was at her old school they still made fun of her intelligence. Although here she only had an average grade level, she was still made fun of for being poor.
She turned her rusty and busted up red 1964 VW beetle off as she saw Claudia running up to it. Her face was excited but full of confusion. She came to her window and Adriana rolled her window down.
“There was a murder on the school grounds, well they are saying she fell but, what she was doing on the bell tower no one knows. You have to come take a look at this.” She said as she opened her door for her.
Adriana grabbed her backpack and jumped out of her car locking it in the process. She followed Claudia as she ran towards a large crowd. She stopped and waited and when Adriana got up close she grabbed her hand and pulled her through the crowd of people, it reminded her of when they would go to clubs on the weekends and Claudia would do the same thing. It’s how Adriana got to see My Chemical Romance up close and personal.
They stopped when they reached a yellow strip of plastic that blocked off the area. Through all the police and firemen, she could see a small body lying on the ground. Her legs were folded in an awkward looking position, her blond hair was a mess around her face and one of her shoes lay about ten feet away from her. There was a lot of red fluid that Adriana presumed to be blood.
“What the hell happened?” She asked Claudia as she seemed distracted by the events.
Claudia shrugged. “I don’t know but this is going to make this school much more interesting, can you imagine the rumors that are going to fly in the next couple of weeks.”
Adriana folded her arms in front of her chest. Who was the girl? They would find out soon enough the bell on the large tower chimed to tell them they were late for first period. When Adriana turned to get Claudia she noticed that she was twirling her hair in front of a very tall, very handsome fireman. She rolled her eyes and grabbed Claudia’s arm.
“She’s late for class.” She said to the fireman. “Shouldn’t you be helping pick up this mess.” She said as she began to pull her away.
“Jesus, Claudia. Can’t you go one full day with out a boyfriend. You just broke up with Tommy like yesterday.”
Claudia snapped her gum. “First of all it was Friday, that was three days ago and second of all, I was just having a little fun. You need to lighten up.” She said as they walked through the double doors to the entrance of the school.
The school entrance was decked out with water fountains and works of art on the walls. They wanted parents to think that their kids were getting the best education money could buy and she guessed if you had paintings hanging on the wall it meant the school had enough money to give them that. There was a secretary that sat in a large desk right in the middle of the room behind her a huge statue of the man who funded the Academy, Horace J. Cooper. He was holding a finger to his chin and had an eye piece on his left eye, with the chain that hung down attached to his shirt.
They had to go to the desk and check in before they went to class, because they were going to be late. It was one of many policies, another including you couldn’t date anyone in the school. Which was obviously broken every day. It was more like you can’t get caught dating. They checked in and made it to their first class which they both had together.
When they entered the class room it had already begun. But with the way the teacher was speaking Adriana knew that it wasn’t about calculus. They both quietly entered only a few people lifting their heads one of them being, Jake Turner. His shoulder length black hair pulled back into a pony tail. He always wore black and his nails were painted different colors every day. She swore he wore eyeliner. He also had a few tattoo’s up and down his arms and who knew where else. He was very masculine with his tight black shirts that always showed the outline of his muscles. He should have been on the football team or some sort of sport, but he was obviously not into that. Jake wasn’t like Claudia and her, his father was a multi-billionaire, inventing something important, though nobody really knew what it was. He was always giving Adriana a hard time, for the last two months he wouldn’t leave her alone. He never even spoke to Claudia but, he was always making smartass comments about what Adriana was wearing or how her hair was done. She had learned to ignore it mostly. But it was really creepy when he would be nice to her, on the occasion he would do things for her like open a door or even walk her to her next class. He looked up from his paper that he was doodling on and gave her a very seductive smile. She quickly looked away and took her assigned seat which happened to be right in front of him.
“Now class I know it’s hard but Nora Arndt was a very special student here at Hidden Valley Academy. She will be missed. If you want to sign her card for her family it will be up here.” Her calculus teacher Mr. Smithson sat a card down on his desk. Adriana thought about the name, Nora Arndt, why did she know that name. Then it hit her, she was another girl like her and Claudia. She had a high GPA and no millionaire parent. That was strange. She shrugged if off not even knowing if the girl was actually murdered or not, when she felt a poke at her back. She rolled eyes and tried to ignore it, but another one came. She turned around and stared into his big green eyes, for a second she paused. Jake didn’t have his evil glare there was real concern in his eyes.
“Hey,” he whispered. “Are you okay, I mean with this whole girl dying thing?” He asked nicely.
She was caught off guard. “What do you care?” She whispered back as she turned around. She thought about all the times he had called her names with his friends and tripped her in the hallway. He really was an ass to her most of the time.
The teacher turned to them and asked, “Do you two have something to say to the class? Or are you just disrupting it for fun, Adriana.” Mr. Smithson had always had it out for her. Since she began attending his class. Every time there was a question to be answered he picked her. Today was no different.
“No, sir. We’ll stop.” She turned to look at Jake, who’s mouth was closed tight.
When the bell tolled again they all stood up and a few people signed Nora’s card, Claudia and Adriana including. They walked out of the classroom together. Adriana looked back to see that Jake was signing the card too. He did have a heart? Who would have thought?
“So, That teacher really has it out for you, huh Drina?” Claudia asked, using the nickname that only she used.
“Yeah, I don’t know what I did to him, but he sure doesn‘t like me.” She said as she switched her backpack to her other shoulder and walked up to her locker.
“So what do you think about this whole thing?” Claudia asked as she leaned against the locker next to Adriana’s.
Adriana pushed her backpack into the locker and pulled out a few books that she would need and closed it.
“I don’t know, just a little weird that she wasn’t wealthy like the rest of the kids you know?” Adriana answered.
“Yeah, I’m a little freaked out too, but hey, I’m going to get to class early, there is this new boy I hear is absolutely adorable. Talk to you later.” She waved as she skipped down the hallway to join a couple of her other friends that were in her next class, and who were about as boy crazy as she was. Adriana again just rolled her eyes at her. She began to walk down the hallway towards her class, when someone stopped her.
“Adriana, can I talk to you for a second?” It was Jake. He stood blocking her way. She tried to get around him but he kept stopping her.
“Fine, since you wont let me pass, what is it?” She sighed and slumped waiting for him to continue.
“In here.” he grabbed her arm and pulled her into the janitor’s closet, and shut the door.
“What the hell!” She screamed as he pulled the chain to turn the light on. She looked at him standing a little too close to her. She breathed a little heavy. He may have been an ass to her since she came here but something about him right now made her want to grabbed him and pull his warm body close to hers. She blinked her eyes trying to not think of that.
“I’m sorry,” He said. “but, I think you are in danger.” He took her hand in his, it was warm but a little wet from sweat.
“What do you mean?” she asked as she pulled her hand away from his. She tried to move away from him but the closet was too tight. And he just moved closer to her.
“Okay maybe I should explain something to you.” He wrapped his arm around her waist and pulled her even closer to him if it was possible. She was stunned she didn’t know what to do.
“Explain what?” She asked in a breathy voice.
“I, um…” He leaned down towards her until their lips were almost touching. “You are the most beautiful woman I have ever met.” He said as he held their position and she could feel his breath on her lips. She noticed his bright green eyes staring into hers.
“But, all the names, and tripping me in the hallway?” She asked him, she was entirely confused and yet very aroused right now.
“I’m childish, I never knew how to talk to women. My father was never there to tell me what to do, so I resorted to being mean. I thought you would understand but when you didn’t I got angry with you. I’m sorry. But I like you very much, Adriana. More than I can handle.” He said as he locked lips with her and kissed her. It was amazing, his lips were velvety soft and she couldn’t help but wrap her arms around his neck. In all reality she felt the same way for him. Even if he was mean to her, she could barely resist his amazing good looks and his sensual smile that he flashed her every once and a while. The kiss seemed to last forever, when he finally pulled away.
“Listen, I think Nora was murdered. I don’t know any more than that, but I heard a couple teacher’s talking to the police. The same thing happened at another private school. The killer is targeting poor girls. And you and Claudia are known to be the least wealthy people in this school.” He had panic on his face. He was genuinely worried about her. “You need to warn Claudia, and get the hell out of this school.”
Adriana pulled away and laughed. “Are you serious? How do you expect us to get out of the school. Security is extremely high, and with that how did someone even get into here to kill someone, anyway?”
Jake shook his head a few black strands fell from his pony tail. “I don’t know but you have to figure it out.” He turned the light back off and peeked out the door. They both could hear the sound of the class bell. “I’m going to slip out and then you count to ten and follow me okay?” He looked at her. She nodded her agreement. After a few seconds he left closing the door behind him. She pinched herself, to see if she was dreaming. She wasn’t that had actually happened. She counted to ten and took a deep breath. She left the closet and began to walk down the hallway.
The rest of the day was boring. There were so many rumor’s about what had happened to Nora. Some believable ones and a few unbelievable. She heard one that Nora was part of a drug gang and she wanted to leave and was killed. Then there was another one about her having an affair with a teacher. Adriana didn’t know what to believe anymore. She hadn’t seen Jake the rest of the day, someone said he went home or skipped or something. She felt a little strange even thinking about him and she was almost worried.
“So, are you going to the party this weekend?” Claudia asked her as they walked to Adriana’s little red bug.
“What party?” She asked as she stuck her key in the keyhole and unlocked the door. She sat down and leaned over to unlock the passenger door for Claudia.
Claudia sat down and threw her backpack in the backseat. Adriana followed suit and started the car.
“Oh there is just this big party at Tommy Finney’s house this weekend.” She said as Adriana pulled out and began to drive to Claudia’s house.
“You mean Tommy Finney the guy you just broke up with?” Adriana asked as she took a corner and everything in the car leaned to the right.
Claudia shrugged. “Yeah, your point. We are still friends you know.” She pulled the mirror down and checked her make up.
Adriana laughed. “You mean, your friends with benefits.” She pulled into Claudia’s driveway. Again Claudia shrugged.
Adriana shook her head. Claudia’s house wasn’t very big it was a two bedroom home, and her and her mother lived there together. She had a small dog who was barking as she got out of the car. Claudia leaned down before she shut the door and looked at Adriana.
“Well, Drina, what do you think you want to go?” She asked her.
Adriana thought about it. She wondered if Jake was going to be there. “I’ll think about it alright it’s only Monday.”
“Okay, I’ll call you later.” Claudia shut the door and ran to her front door, her dog went crazy jumping at the screen door. She watched as she pulled out of the driveway.
When she got home she went straight to her room and pulled out her home work. Just because there might have been a murder at her school doesn’t mean she can’t do her homework. She was just in the middle of writing an essay on Ulysses S. Grant of the civil war, when a knock at the door came.
“I’m studying.” She said.
“I know sweetie but can I come in for a minute?” Her mom’s sweet voice came from the closed door.
“Alright, come in.” Adriana closed her book and waited for her mom to enter.
“How are you doing?” She asked as she sat on the bed next to her.
“I’m fine, why?” Adriana leaned back on the bed on to her elbows.
“Well, I mean with that Nora girl at school. I was just making sure your okay. It’s a hard thing to loose a fellow class mate.”
“Yeah It’s okay, I didn’t really know her anyway. I just know that she was like me and Claudia.” Adriana sat back up and started to pick at the loose fabric on her torn jeans.
Her mom took her hand, and instantly Adriana thought about Jake. She stopped thinking of him immediately when her mom looked at her and said, “You know she was murdered, Who would do such a thing? Did she have any enemies?”
Adriana jumped from the bed and went to the window. “Mom, you sound like a cop. I told you I didn’t know her so I don’t know. You know having a retired cop for a mother isn’t really as fun as they say.” Sarcasm dripped from her mouth as she watched out the window and saw the sun start to set.
“I wasn’t trying to. I was just wondering. Well I guess I’ll leave you alone then. Get some sleep, okay.” her mom sighed as she left the room and closed the door behind her. Adriana went back to her bed and fell backwards on to it and stared at the ceiling. It was an eventful day, she yawned and before she knew it she was asleep.
The next few days calmed down a bit as Nora’s memorial passed and everyone started to forget all the rumors. Jake had acted exactly how he used, like they had never had that conversation in the janitor’s closet. At first she was upset about it but then she just decided to go along with his pathetic denial. Forgetting about Jake, she told Claudia that she would go to the dumb party. Claudia was so excited. It would be the first party the two of them would attend together.
“I’m going to dress you up. You are going to look so hot. All the boys will be drooling, I promise.” Claudia was obviously more excited than Adriana.
That night Adriana pulled out the book she was assigned for English. It was titled “A Farewell To Arms” by Ernest Hemmingway. It was based in WWI about a medic who fell in love with a army nurse. She hadn’t gotten to the end yet but it was interesting. Her teacher had said the book was based on Hemmingway’s real life, as a ambulance driver in the war. She was just getting to chapter eleven when she heard a noise outside her window. At first she ignored it but then she heard a tap on the glass. Her heart started to race and she grabbed the closes object which happen to be a pair of scissors from her nightstand. They weren’t exactly a blunt object but they could do some damage.
She turned off her light so she could see out the window better. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary the wind blew a little and the tree outside her window swayed back and forth. She opened up the window and looked out.
“Adriana,” She heard her name whispered. It sounded familiar. “Adriana, put the scissor down it’s me.” He whispered as he came into the moonlight. His familiar black hair was loose and blowing in the breeze.
“Jake!” Adriana whispered a little louder than he had. “What are you doing here?” She asked shock still in her whisper.
“Can I come in?” he asked. She saw a flicker of light in the distance. A storm was coming. She debated shutting the window on his hand and letting her mother find him in the morning dripping wet and fingers blue from the pain. But she changed her mind when he smiled that seductive smile she loved so much.
“Fine, but your not staying long.” She said as she moved away from the window to let him in.
“Thanks.” He said as he winked to her. He lifted his leg up over the window seal and landed more quietly than she had ever landed when she use to sneak out. Walking in quietly around and looked at everything. He looked at the pictures of her and some of her old friends from her old school. She had some of her own paintings on the wall and drawings, he walked around and looked at every single one of them. Then he picked up a small gold metal with a purple ribbon attached to it. He read it out loud.
“Greatest Achievement Award, 5th grade Scholars Society.” He looked up at her and smirked. “Well you were definitely a nerd in elementary school too huh.” He said as he went and plopped down on her bed. The bed made a squeaky sound as he slipped off his shoes and laid back putting his hands behind his head. He sighed and lifted his head to look at her. She stood by the window with her arms crossed.
“Okay, what do you want? You pull me into a closet and tell me you like me a lot then, for the next couple of days you treat me the same way you use to, now you show up at my window in the middle of the night. What you want from me?”
He was silent, he frowned and leaned back up from the bed and patted the bed beside him. She rolled her eyes and went to sit next to him. Her feet didn’t quite touch the floor when she sat down unlike his which were stretched out and crossed.
“I’m sorry. I just can’t be seen with you like that. Well not right now at least. But that’s not why I came here. I came to warn you about someone.”
“Wait go back, why can’t you be seen with me. You’re as big of a reject as I am in that school.”
“Yes, I may be but, what do you think would happen if I started to date a poor student. I have been a rich student my whole life. I still have a reputation.” He smiled at her and took her hand.
She pulled it away and got up from the bed. “Just get out, Jake. Your pathetic.” She pointed towards the window.
“Just wait okay. God, I just, Oh it doesn’t matter we can’t change who we are. Listen to me okay. The new guy, there is something funny about him. He has no records for any other schools it’s like he doesn’t even exist. I think he had something to do with Nora’s death. Just steer clear of him okay.” He said as he made his way to the window.
“Fine whatever. Just go.” She went to sit back on her bed as he began to climb out her window.
“Adriana, I’m sorry. You will be mine one day, I promise.” He said to her as he was standing outside.
She walked to the window and began to shut it. “Who says I want to be yours anyway.” She said quietly.
“You do. I can see it in your eyes when you look at me.” he said as he began to walk away. She closed the window tight, and locked it.
Wednesday Night
Bethany Mills ran down the hallway of the school, her black curly hair was swirling in the breeze as she tried to escape the man who was chasing her. She reached the door way to the outside courtyard. She saw the bell tower and ran towards it. Then she remembered the girl, Nora, who was killed there. She detoured around the tower and ran towards the gardens and jumped into a large lavender bush. She sat quietly the only sound she made was her heavy breathing which she tried to cover up with her hands. She heard foot steps on the grass as her pursuer came very close to the lavender bush. She tried to hide her shaking in fear as she saw his black boots walk by. When they disappeared she sighed in relief. But it was too soon she felt a hand grab her hair and pull her upwards. The pain was horrible she tried to scream but she was so scared nothing but air came out of her lungs. He pulled her by the hair across the lawn and leaned her up against the bell tower. He back handed her once, twice. She felt blood spew from her nose and mouth.
“Please, don’t hurt me.” she begged as she tried to get up to run away. He pushed her back down and pulled out a large blade. She stared through the eye holes of the ski mask and saw his piercing green eyes as he leaned in closer and slashed at her neck. He pulled the ski mask off and before the blackness came she saw his face. The man who had ended her life. In the distance she heard the bell’s ringing.
Thursday
A ringing in Adriana’s ear woke her as she slapped off her alarm clock. Thursday, one more day until the weekend. She couldn’t wait as much as she didn’t want to admit it she was excited for the party. She took a shower and got ready for class. Her mom had made some pancakes and she took a few for the road.
When she arrived at school she saw a hoard of people standing together and a bunch of police cars. She parked and ran to the scene. She saw another body, propped up against the brick tower. This time she was covered with a white sheet. There were red stains all over the sheet. It had to be another girl. Who was it this time?
“Tragic, isn’t it.” She heard a deep male voice coming from behind her. She turned around and bright green eyes stared her up and down. They were almost un naturally green.
“Can I help you?” She said as she stepped away from him.
“I’m Steve Calaway, I’m knew here. I couldn’t help but notice that you had beautiful long brown hair.”
Okay creepy. Instead of saying anything to him she began to walk away. He followed her.
“I heard that school was going to be closed for the day because of that.” He indicated the direction of the dead body. “So I thought maybe you wanted to get some breakfast.” He said to her.
“Are you asking me out?” She asked him as she continued to walk, searching for a teacher to confirm the school cancellation. Soon though there was an announcement telling everyone to return home. She turned and walked back to her car.
“If you say yes, than I am. If it’s a no, than well I was just seeing if you were hungry.” He gave her a very adorable smile, in a creepy stalker sort of way.
“Well, um…I think I will pass, sorry.” She said as she got to her car. He put his hand on her shoulder. “Listen buddy,” But before she could even turn around someone was pulling the guy away from her and standing in between them.
“Jake!” Adriana said as the tall boy stood in front of her ready to punch Steve.
“Stay away from her New Guy. I don’t want to have to find out you hurt my girl.” Jake said as Steve stood baffled.
“Alright, you win this time. But I don’t give up that easily.” Steve said as he turned on his heels and walked away.
“Are you okay, Adriana. Please tell me he didn’t hurt you.” He said as he checked her arms and touched her face to make sure there were no bruises. She was entirely surprised that he had done that. What was he trying to prove.
She pulled away. “I’m fine, he wasn’t hurting me. What are you doing? Stop.” She as he took her hand in his and kissed it.
“I was kissing it all better. I’m sorry about last night. When I got home I realized how foolish I was being. It doesn’t matter if you’re poor and I’m rich. I want you to be mine no matter what.” He said as he tried to kiss her. She pulled away.
“Wait a second. Do I even get a say in this?” She said as she moved out of his arms.
“But I thought you said…” He looked defeated, sad almost.
“I didn’t say anything, you said I wanted to be with you. Listen right now there is so much going on I just don’t think it would be good for either of us if we you know did this kind of thing.” She pushed her way to her car.
“Fine! But this was your only chance. If I can’t have you then I have no reason to be nice to you anymore!” He screamed at her as she pulled away and left him standing there.
She smiled. He would try again, if she learned anything from him it was that he wasn’t going to quit. She saw Claudia standing on the curb. She pulled over and stopped.
“You want a ride.” She laughed as Claudia stuck her tongue out at her. She came around and jumped into the passenger side.
“So I just had the weirdest encounter with Jake Turner.” Adriana told her everything. She even told her about last night and the janitor’s closet.
“No way. Maybe he will be at the party. You guys would be cute together. I mean I don’t find him attractive at all. I’m more into those sporty types. But your style my dear, closer to his I guess.”
Changing the subject Adriana asked. “So you know who died?”
“Bethany Mills, she was a non rich chick too.” Claudia said.
“Oh yeah, how’d you get that info?” Adriana glared at her out of the corner of her eye.
“I blew the detective.” Was all she said.
“What Claudia!…”
“I’m just kidding, jeez you really think I sleep around don’t you. I over heard one of the cops talking. Said it’s the same MO as the other school across town. What do you think it means?”
“I don’t know, but maybe this party isn’t a good idea.” Adriana watched the road as they drove to the small coffee shop that they frequented. It was on the main street in town and it seemed as though a few people were gathering there. School being cancelled brought a lot of people out since they were all awake anyway.
They both got out of the car and began to walk to the door. Adriana realized that she forgot to lock the door.
“I’ll be right there get a table, if there are any.” Claudia nodded and disappeared into the doors.
Adriana got to her car and realized someone was leaning against it.
“Excuse me, I know it’s not much but could you please stop leaning on my car.”
When she came around the car she saw it was Steve. “Oh it’s you, excuse me.” She pushed aside and got to the car.
“So you and that guy really together?” He asked her, As she leaned down and locked all the car doors.
“Not that it’s any of your business, but no, we aren’t.” She said as she shut the last door, she jumped back when she realized that he was right in next to her. “Do you have to stand so close.” She said as she leaned back and walked away towards the café. He followed her.
“So does that mean I may have a chance?” He asked her as he stayed way to close behind her.
She stopped and he almost ran into her. “When I say that we are not together, that doesn’t necessarily mean that we aren’t or wont be together in the future so just back off please.”
He came up behind her and grabbed her wrist. He stared her in the face and held her attention. Then he said something that chilled her to the bones. “I’d be careful girl, you don’t want to end up like the other two girls now do you?” He said as his now frightening green eyes stared into her very soul. She pulled her arm away and he backed away with a smirk on his face.
“Goodbye Adriana.” He said as he walked away nonchalantly.
Adriana walked into the café and looked for Claudia. She was sitting by herself with two cups of coffee in front of her. She sat down and took a big gulp of her coffee. It scalded her tongue but it made her feel much better. She took a deep breath and looked out the window to see if Steve was still there.
“What took you so long?” She said as she took a sip of her coffee. “And what are you looking at?”
“I think, Steve, the new guy, is killing those girls. I don’t know why but maybe it has to do with getting rejected.” She told her what he said to her outside and when she was with Jake.
“What! I thought he was a nice guy. Should we tell someone?” Claudia sat straight in her chair.
“No, I think we need to wait, lets just let it go for now. I don’t know maybe he was just threatening me you know. Scaring me.” She said as she took another gulp of her coffee.
“Well I just got a text, school is cancelled for tomorrow too. So maybe we should get this out of our minds and go shopping. I’ll call you in the morning okay.” Adriana nodded.
That night Adriana couldn’t sleep well. Every time she closed her eyes she pictured being killed and remembering what Steve said. She tossed and turned until she got up and tried to read a little. Soon there was a tap at her window. She got up from bed and wrapped her blanket around her, she was wearing shorts and a tank top and she didn’t want to give Jake any idea’s. But when she went to unlock the window she saw a face it wasn’t Jake, but green eyes stared at her through a ski mask. Speechless she backed up and jumped into her bed and covered her head. Then she heard the tapping again.
“Adriana, it’s me Jake, open the window please, love.” She lifted the blanket from her face and peeked out, she saw his black hair and worried face. She jumped up and ignoring the blanket she unlocked the window and let him in. She was almost in tears when he was fully in the room.
“Oh Jake, I don’t know what is going on but I’m scared to death.” She said as she ran into his arms and she felt him wrapped his strong arms around her and pull her closer.
“What happened?” He asked her. She told him about Steve and then about the ski mask just then.
“I didn’t see anyone, but don’t worry I’m going to stay here all night.” He walked her over to her bed and helped her lay down. She was surprised when he didn’t try and get into the bed with her. Instead he sat over in a small wicker chair she had next to the window. She sat wide awake looking through her book shelf.
“Do you have any John Grisham or Edgar Allen Poe?” he asked as he searched it.
Adriana yawned and mumbled an mhm, she pointed to the top of the book shelf where a book of Edgar Allen Poe works sat. He took it and started to read it.
“Go to sleep, no one is going to get into your room while I’m here, I promise you.” He said. And those words actually comforted her. At that moment she put everything that Jake had done or said aside and she realized that she was falling for him. She was falling for the boy who picked on her for the last two months. And she was totally okay with it. She closed her eyes and drifted off to sleep.
Friday
Adriana walked down the sidewalk with Claudia. They had gone to four or five clothing stores and gotten a few outfits.
“How are you affording this, Claudia?” Adriana asked.
“Don’t you worry your pretty little head. I’ve got it all figured out. I even got us some booze for tonight.” She said as they sat down on an outside bench.
Adriana didn’t even mention what happened that night. She had woken up and Jake was gone. She had faintly remembered him kissing her on the forehead very early in the morning. She thought he had sat on her bed for a while just watching her sleep. He had locked her window and snuck out her bedroom door. He was a daring little shit. If her mother had woken up he would have been arrested. But it seemed he had gotten out alright. She smiled at the thought.
“What are you smiling at. You have been in this weird mood this morning.” Claudia waved her hand in front of her face.
“Oh it’s nothing, I guess I’m just kind of excited for tonight.”
“Yeah okay why can’t I believe that.” Claudia knew that she hated parties and gatherings.
“Well, it’s different I think Jake is going to be there and well maybe we can forget about this killing spree thing and just have some fun.” Claudia was surprised with her.
“I can’t believe I’m hearing this from my little party pooper. Well then it’s about five ‘o’ clock right now you go home and get ready pick one of these outfits and we shall party it up okay?”
“Alright.” Adriana agreed.
She picked out a more sane outfit that Claudia had bought for her. It was a blue tank top that had gems all over it, with a pair of light faded jeans. She looked at herself in the mirror. She looked like all the other popular girls now. She really didn’t like this kind of dress style. She pulled off the shirt and put on one of her band t-shirts.
“There that looks better.” She said aloud.
“I liked the bling, bling.” she heard a voice coming from the window.
Jake stood there watching her change.
“Damnit Jake, will you please tell me when you are out there you scared the crap out of me.”
Instead of coming through the window he stayed standing outside. He crossed his arms on the window seal laid his head on them. “You ready to go?” he asked.
“What are you taking me there, what about Claudia?” she asked as she pulled her long brown hair into a pony tail leaving two strands hang down on each side.
“Well, she is a little preoccupied with one they call Tommy, so I thought I would give you a lift.” he said as he continued to watch her.
“Alright, but don’t think just because I’m letting you give me a ride means that we are together or anything.” She joked as she went to the window and jumped out. He held her by the waist and helped her down to the ground. “Thanks.” She said as they began to walk towards the street.
There was a slick black Porsche Carrera GT sitting in front of her house.
“That’s your car?” She asked as they made their way to the car.
“I hope you don’t mind, this is a rental, my other car is in the shop.” He said as he opened the door for her.
“Huh, well then, at least we will be arriving in style.”
They made it to the party and the house was huge. There were cars every where, nice cars. Jake parked and got out to let her out.
“So this is rich people parties?” She asked.
“They aren’t any different than poor people parties.” he said as he laughed. “Come on lets go get a drink.” he took her hand and they walked into the house.
Inside there were people all over the place. The music was so loud she couldn’t even hear herself think. She saw Claudia dancing with Tommy and she decided to just leave them alone. Jake left her for a second and returned with a glass full of some brown liquid. She smelled it.
“What is it?” She tried to say.
“Huh?” He screamed back.
“What Is It!?” She repeated as she screamed louder than him.
“It’s rum and coke.” He yelled back.
She took a sip the bite of the rum was on her tongue but the coke made it taste alright. She took another sip. All the people were making her dizzy.
“Can we go get some air?” She asked him as she felt herself sweating from standing there doing nothing.
“Yeah, come on they have an amazing back yard.” He said as he pulled her through the crowd. They passed Claudia and Tommy. Claudia gave her a wink and smiled. The music died down as they left the patio doors and stood outside. There was a huge pool, that had half naked bodies making out and heavily petting each other. Great. She really hoped Jake wasn’t expecting that. He led her around the pool to another part of the back yard. There was a couple of lavender bushes and a wooden bench.
“Here lets sit down.” Jake said as he waited for her to sit.
She sat down and took another drink of her glass, this time it was a bit larger. She started to feel a little light headed from the alcohol.
“So do you think Steve did it?” She asked him out of the blue.
“I don’t know, but why are you worried?” He asked as cupped her cheek in his hand to pull her face towards him.
She closed her eyes to relish the feel of his warm hand on her skin. “I don’t know, I guess if he is going after people who are rejecting him, I might be next.”
“Yeah, but he is also going after poor people, so maybe it’s not Steve, maybe it’s someone else. Don’t worry about it right now.” He leaned in to kiss her when someone came stumbling around the corner.
“Oh if it isn’t Adriana, the prude!” Steve stood with a bottle of beer in his hand. “He was right, you don’t give it up very easily.”
Both Adriana and Jake stood from the bench. “What do you want, Steve?” Jake pushed her behind him and stood tall in front of her for protection.
Steve just laughed. “He will have her. You just wait, he doesn’t take anything from anyone, especially when he will never be able to have children or ever teach again.” Her eyes opened wide. It couldn’t be. He stared right at Adriana. Then Steve leaned over and threw up all over the ground. Jake took Adriana’s hand and pulled her. They ran until they made it back to his car. They both got in and he began to drove.
“What did he mean by that?” Jake asked.
“I um..” She thought about it. Then decided she had to tell him. “Okay I’ll explain just pull over.” He did as she asked. “this is hard to talk about, two years ago at my old school there was this teacher. His name was Mr. Darrow, or John Darrow. He had developed this strange crush on me. He would harass me and I didn’t do anything about it because I just didn’t want to be called any more names than I already was. A late night I stayed after school to work on something in the library, he was there. He confronted me about my rejection of him. Said I was just being a prude and that I really did want him. He…” She began to tear up. Jake grabbed her hand and pulled her close to him.
“You don’t have to say it I know what happened, continue.”
“Well, afterwards he stood over me telling me that if I said anything he would kill me. I panicked I kicked him in the crotch and I took off running I was half naked running through the school grounds. Soon I saw someone in the garden and I ran up to them with him close behind me. He stopped when he realized that the gardener was there also. I pressed charges, but all they did was put him in jail for a couple of months. He got out on good behavior. But he was never aloud to teach again.” She paused.
“So he is looking for revenge?” Jake asked.
“Well yes, but that’s not all. I just read not to long before I transferred here that, a few people found out about what he had done and got a group together, they found him on his way to his home and beat him up. I also read that they…um…castrated him.”
“What?” Jake said as he unconsciously grabbed for his privates. “But that’s not your fault, love. Why is he after you?”
“Because, Jake, don’t you understand. If I would have kept my mouth shut and not pressed charges and pretended like it never happened, he would never have been beaten up.” She began to cry. “It is my fault.” she said through weeps.
Jake grabbed both of her shoulders. “No! You did the right thing. Oh my poor Adriana, I can’t believe that happened to you. I will never allow that to happen again. We are going to the police right now.” He said as he tried to start the car. It made a sound and then quit. “Damn these rentals. Guess we will have to walk.”
They both got out of the car and Adriana froze when she realized where they were. “Jake, we need to get out of here now.” She said as she stared at the bell tower that stood in the middle of the courtyard to the Hidden Valley Private Academy.
“Your not going anywhere, Darling.”
Adriana felt pressure at the back of her head and the last thing she heard was Jake screaming her name and the sound of the large golden bell.
Adriana woke up with her hands tied behind her back, and she had some sort of gag around her mouth. She struggled to get free, but it was useless. She looked around, it was dark and chilly, she waited for her eyes to adjust. Finally figures came into view. She looked across from her to see Jake was tied up and gagged to but he was still unconscious. She tried to kick him but she couldn’t reach. She looked up and that’s when she realized they were in the bell tower. The large golden bell was about fifteen feet above her.
“Oh Adriana, how I’ve missed you.” He stood in front of her with a black ski mask one. His bright green eyes glared at her. “ I don’t even think I need this ski mask, now do I.” He said as he lifted the mask, as he removed her gag. But the face wasn’t who she expected.
“Mr. Smithson? But why?” She asked as she tried her hardest to pull away from him. “I don’t understand?”
“It’s called plastic surgery my dear, new identity. I don’t think Mr. Smithson will be missing his where he is.” The man laughed.
“Mr. Darrow, I’m sorry for what happened to you but, it wasn’t my fault.” Adriana tried to talk to him. She wanted to distract him, while she figured out how to get out of the ties.
“Oh no, your not going to distract me with petty apologies, your going straight to where you belong, bitch.” he grabbed her hair and began to pull her up a metal flight of stairs.
The pain was almost too much to bare. She didn’t know which was more painful her hair being pulled or the pain of every hard metallic step hitting her in the spine. She had to stop thinking about the pain and start figuring out how she was going to get out of this. Right now she knew that Jake was going to be okay at least until he finished with her. But she thought about just trying to pull out of his grip but knowing that all that would do was create a bald spot on her head and probably more pain. Then she felt the rope around her wrist start to loosen from being dragged on the stairs. She tugged and pulled at it until one hand came loose, and then the other. She kept them behind her back to give the illusion she was still tied up.
They finally reached the top of the stairs and he pulled her up and shoved her against the tower wall. She struggled to keep her hands behind her back. She was standing next to the ledge of one of the windows at the very top of the bell tower. She saw the golden bell shining from the light of the moon. John Darrow stood across from her looking at her with an evil glint in his eyes. He almost looked satisfied. Then even if it wasn’t the same face, Adriana remembered that day, how satisfied he looked when he was done with her. His face when he released himself in her. She began to feel disgusted and ashamed of herself. She tried to shake off the image. Jake was right. It wasn’t her fault, she had done what she should have done. She looked over her shoulder to see the dark sidewalk at the bottom of the tower. No one would be there to catch her. Then she thought about the two girls he had killed.
“If all you wanted was to get back at me, then why did you kill those two girls?” She asked trying to distract him more.
He pulled out a blade from his pocket and began to wave it in the air. It was glistening from the moonlight and for a second it lit up his face. “I was just toying with you. I wanted you to be very terrified when I came after you. I wanted you to feel the most fear I could offer. Those two girls were just my ploy to catch you unaware of what was going on.” He came closer to her until he himself was standing in the light of the moon. His salt and pepper hair glistened.
She tried to squirm across the wall to get as far away from his as possible. Soon he was standing with his back to the top of the stairs, where she had a full view of Jake sneaking quietly up them. She wanted to tell him no but she didn’t want to give him away. If anything happened to Jake because of her she would be horrified. John came closer to her, soon he was directly in front of her and had the blade at her neck. Before he could slice she looked at Jakes face and made a very slight tilt of her head for him to go. Finally Jake pounced and she ducked away from the blade.
John tried to shake Jake to the ground but he had his legs around his waist and his arms around his neck. She could hear the struggling noises from Mr. Darrow’s throat. Jake was choking him. Mr. Darrow’s moved around the small area tried to ram Jake into the wall. He was finally successful and Jake fell to the ground. Adriana noticed that the knife was laying by itself on the ground she jumped for it but he was too fast for her. He grabbed it and her simultaneously and held the knife to her neck again.
“Now that we have finished playtime children, lets get this over with damnit!” He screamed as he moved towards the edge of the tower window. And began to dangle Adriana over the edge. She slipped a little but couldn’t see the bottom. John kept his attention towards Jake.
“That’s right, just drop her. That’s going to help you with your little problem. Tell me when you got plastic surgery were they able to fix, you know. Because I heard that even if you did get another one, you would always be limp.” Jake taunted him.
What the hell was he doing? Adriana thought. If he wasn’t careful Darrow was going to drop her and then it would all be over. “Jake stop!” She screamed at him.
“You shut you’re stupid face! You know nothing about me!” Darrow screamed.
“Oh I know you’re not a man. I know that just because you were rejected so many times you had to force women to have you. Your pathetic. You think if you drop her that it will all be fixed. Well it wont. You will still be the pathetic little man with no balls!”
Darrow became enraged he turned and threw Adriana off the ledge. She began to fall screaming the whole way down, but instead of hitting the pavement she hit something soft. She looked around to see a bunch of policemen holding a large fabric blanket that caught her. They laid her on the ground and helped her out of it. One officer placed a blanket around her body and helped her to an ambulance, who’s lights were not on. When did they arrive? Had Jake called them? Then she realized Jake was still up there and John still had the blade.
“No, Jake is still up there you have to go get him. The man has a knife!” She screamed for one of the officers to go get him. Then she heard a mans scream.
Jake jumped out of the way just as the blade struck his side. He felt the blood ooze from the cut. But he wasn’t going to let this man go. He had called the police right after he untied his hands. The dumbass never checked to see if he had his cell phone or not. Fortunately for him and Adriana he did. He jumped again as John sliced at him. This time he missed. Jake pushed him into the wall and grabbed his wrist. He slammed his wrist three or four times until the knife fell out of his hand. Then just because he felt like he, he punched him in the face. Blood spewed from the disgusting man’s nose. He pushed him to the ground and as he struggled to get up Jake kicked him in the gut. The man just laughed.
“You are pathetic.” Jake said as he pushed him over again.
“I’m pathetic. I watched you chase her around for two months, calling her names and being mean to her. At least I treated her like a woman and not one of the boys.” Darrow laughed even harder. Jake became enraged and slammed his fist into his face numerous times. Then he got up and kicked him again. The man continued to laugh in between every blow. Finally Jake stopped. The asshole was right. He had treated her horribly, but it would change and he hoped that this would help him win her heart. He turned around away from Darrow and punched the wall. He let out a loud angry yell. He would take this man in and he will be locked away from the murderers of those two girls.
Jake turned around to grab the man when he realized that he was gone.
“Where are you Darrow! You can’t run! The law will catch up with you!” He ran down the stairs looking for him. When he came out the door he noticed that John hadn’t gotten to far. The police had caught him coming out the door. When he felt that they had him in custody he looked around for Adriana. When he spotted her she was sitting in the back of an ambulance wrapped in a tan blanket. He walked over to her side.
“How you doing? You okay?” He asked her as he wrapped his arm around her shoulder and pulled her close to him.
Adriana looked up at his face, there was blood every where and she noticed when she looked at his side it was bleeding.
“I’m better than you are. I think you need to get someone to look at that.” She said as she went to touch it with her hand.
He winced at the pain and pulled away. “I think I’ll be okay for right this minute. He is going away for a long time.” He turned to her and he took her face in both of his hands and kissed her gently. “And I will never treat you badly again. I love you Adriana. With all of my heart and soul.” His eyes almost glowed in the night as he stared at her.
“I know, and I love you too.” She said as she laid her head on his chest and listened to his heart beat. The bell in the tower chimed again, as if nothing had happened.
Two years later
Adriana took a sip of her coffee and read the paper. She was going to be late for her first college course of the day, but she was almost always late for it. Jake usually woke her up too late on his way to his class and for some reason she could never wake up to her alarm clock.
“Love you babe, I’ll see you tonight. Remember we have to meet Claudia and Tommy at the restaurant at eight.” Jake called to her as he opened the front door to leave.
“Yeah I know. Love you too. You’re going to have to start waking me up earlier, if you want to have morning sex, you know!” She said as she heard him laugh on his way out the door.
She shook her head as she got up to poor one more cup of coffee. She still had to take a shower and everything. She put the paper down, turned on the TV and went to the bathroom. The morning news was on, but she didn’t have time to listen to it. She closed the door to the bathroom and started the shower. She hopped in. Yes her life was much better, it was like nothing ever happened and she intended to keep it that way.
Breaking News!: “John Darrow, convicted of rape, and two counts of murder in the first degree, escaped today from police custody when they were trying to move him from one maximum security prison to another. No one knows where he has gone, but police are tracking him with dogs. Hoping to catch him soon.”
John Darrow stood outside of Adriana’s lower apartment window as he watched her walk into the bathroom and shut the door. He lifted the window quietly and began to sneak in. He would get his revenge. The girl would pay for what she had done to him, one way or the other.
The End
