Look Again

Look into my eyes.

Tell me what you see.

Do you see an opaque curtain in your way,

Hiding a dark past from your view?

Look at my hands.

Tell me what you see.

Do they tremble at your touch

Afraid to reach out for comfort?

Look at my wrists.

Tell me what you see.

Do you see scars dissolved into my skin,

Hiding away where only I can see?

Look at my shoulders

Tell me what you see

Do you see the weight of my mother’s words,

Muscles shivering with the strain?

Look at my heart.

Tell me what you see.

Do you see two halves hanging on by a thread,

The slightest pressure dividing them?

Now let me look in the mirror.

Let me tell you what I see.

I see a bottled-up love just waiting to come out

And a vessel equipped to hold it.

I see eyes that will see happiness again

And hands strong enough to reach out.

I see wrists with pulses beating purposefully

And shoulders that can bear the weight of worlds upon them.

And most importantly,

I see a heart that can live again

With new blood flowing through it every day.

I see unbreakable hope in this body

And I see a future to die for.

So if you look into my eyes

And you tell me what you see

And it is less than magnificent, powerful and strong,

Truthfully,

You need to look again.
