First touch, is ice cold
It’s windy, blowing hard against me
I'm hanging on to my board
The deeper I go, the better
The waves grow and crash against me
Seeming to tell me to go back to shore
But I know
If I get behind it it’ll be flat
My arms are burning
Its started to rain
Thrashing my head and face
One stroke, then two
One, two, one, two
I climb on my board
Paddling over the waves
I want to let go, and dive
But I can’t
My friend is slowing down
“Go back!
Too windy!”
She screams
But I carry on
I fly over a wave, and there it is
The back
I smile happily
Despite the fact that my feet are numb
So are my hands
Its peaceful
The wind is still blowing
Whipping my hair against my wetsuit
The water is finding a way in
I shiver and my teeth start to chatter
But I don’t regret it
“No!”
I hear screams from the beach
“Come in!”
The sirens go, but they are faint
I rest my head on my board
The sun is setting
They sky goes red
Blood red
It’s so cold
A fin appears from the water
Maybe a small wave
Or my imagination
Its big as it rises
Dark grey, maybe even black
I reach out my hand
Dolphins are nice . . .
