About a Girl

World weary feet that have walked on too many sharp stones.

Steps heavy for the weighted shoulders.

Trodding the steep path surrounded by thistle.

Each step bringing pain showering through muscles,

and bones and joints like sparks from a fire.

She said, "stay awhile.  Don't treat me bad.

Lay your burden down at your feet, and lay your

your head on my chest.

Squeeze my hand because we both know that

I will pull you from the water or drown with you.

I will lift you from the ashes or burn.

And I will never make you go.  Don't make me go."

Darkest hour on the darkest night of the year.

The tide's flow brings the thick, rolling fog.

The trees huddle to hold out the moon's light

The path is gone and afraid to stumble, her fear wraps

it's hands around her throat.

I said, "stay awhile.  Don't treat me bad.

Lay your burden down at your feet, and lay your

head on my chest.

Squeeze my hand because we both know that

I will pull you from the water or drown with you.

I will lift you from the ashes or burn.

And I will never make you go.  Don't make me go."

I sweated and toiled and with a hand she gave me pause.  She lay her

head on my chest and listened.  She said, "I know your faults but I can hear your heart

is strong.  Don't give up."

When she was afraid in the dark of the night.  When she was for running, I held her harder.

"We are all the light we will ever need and I fade when you are gone."

The blues looked at me.  They softened and I watched her sweet mouth part.

She said, "Stay awhile.  Don't treat me bad.

Lay your burden down at your feet, and please lay your

head down on my chest.

Squeeze my hand because we both know that

I will never run to any place that you would not follow me.

I will hold you like the child you were if you hold me like the man you are.

And I will never make you go.  Please, please don't make me go. "
