“Howdy John”, said a familiar voice from across the dirt road. This greeting snapped John right out of his daydreaming phase, because it made him jump. A chuckle escaped the man that was now walking across the road, “You alright Johnny Boy, because you jumped like a cat standing on a bed of hot coals!” rang the man’s voice. John Marston looked over at the man that was now standing beside him, “What are you up to Slim Jim?” he said in a mocking tone. Jim Hillshire’s face turned red so John fell silent and went back to digging the metal tip of his hoe into the bare dirt. Slim Jim was so annoyed for some reason that he just walked off leaving John to just shake his head. “I don’t know what his problem is lately!” mumbled John in frustration. Then the metal struck a hard object, a rock maybe, but when John moved the blade he saw a green colored glow.

John dropped his tool to the cold, hard ground, and he just stared at the immensely glowing object. It looked like a rock, but what kind of rock glows green, and then he noticed the rock was entwined with baling twine. Around the bottom of the rock’s smooth surface was a note. He crouched down to pick up the little, mysterious note, and he began to read the black, bold letters. When he was done reading he couldn’t believe what it said, “Wishing Rock, wish with great care and thinking.” He stared at the note until his eyes grew tired, then he shoved them into his pocket. When he turned around he came face to face with Jim, who had come back without being noticed. This shocked and scared John to see his old friend standing so close and quietly, Jim finally broke the silence by saying sarcastically, “ What ya got there Johnny Boy?!” Johnny studied Slim’s face, and figured that Slim had read the note already, so John didn’t say anything. A look of annoyance and hatred crossed Jim’s face, and he was about to say something when a woman’s voice rang out from across the field. “Johnny, darling, come here, it’s getting late, and you are already working yourself to hard!” said John’s wife Sarah. Without any hesitation or a goodbye, John made his way to his house, well a pathetic excuse for one, to get away from strange feeling that the conversation with Jim left. Sarah was standing in the hallway when John pulled out the rock, Sarah’s expression turned from worried to surprise at the sight of the glowing rock. She asked John what the thing was, so he explained. Sarah didn’t think the rock was “magical” despite the fact that it was glowing green! Sarah said, “I don’t believe you, your twenty five years old and you are still making up wild stories and playing with pebbles!”

That comment hurt John a little, so he went to his bedroom to think things over. “What if this thing is just a hoax, but what if it isn’t?” thought John. Hours went by and Johnny finally decided to go for it. “What could I wish for… more money, a bigger house? Oh! I got it since Sarah can’t conceive a child, I could wish for one, we want one so badly!” John said to himself. With some thinking he decided against it despite his heart’s protest, he thought that the Wishing Rock could twist the wish, and it could cause something unbearable to happen to Sarah. John finally decided just to go to bed.

The next morning, John decided to wish for the chickens out back, that didn’t lay enough eggs, to lay more eggs. John help up the rock, cupped it with his hands, and wished for the chickens to lay more eggs. The rock started glowing so intensely, it made John’s eyes burn, so he was forced to look away. When the rock was done performing its light show, a fuss started outside. When he went outside there were eggs, eggs, eggs, eggs everywhere, they were pouring out of the door of the coop, like water rushing off a huge cliff. Sarah was baffled at the sight, and she finally believed that the rock could grant wishes. After gathering up all the eggs, they saved some for food and sold the rest which brought in a large sum of well needed money. That night John and Sarah went to bed happy, because for years they had to put up with crops that didn’t grow and chickens that didn’t lay eggs. After a few hours of peaceful sleep Sarah was woken up by a noise in their room. She couldn’t see much, but she could make out the silhouette of a man, “John!” she screamed. John jerked awake and lit a lantern just in time to see Jim slip out the window with the Wishing Rock! John jumped out of bed and flung himself out the window to chase after the thief. After a big run John managed to tackle Slim to the ground, and wrestle the rock out of his hands. “What do you think you are doing!” yelled John clearly enraged at this point. “I wanted your rock so I tried to steal it!” Slim screamed back. That response stunned Johnny which unfortunately gave Jim the opportunity to kick John off of him. When John got Jim was gone and thankfully he never saw Jim again.

As the days passed more wishes were being made such as good soil, some good cows, a bigger house, and two horses. After a year had passed Sarah and John had made a decent amount of money, but something felt like it was missing. That missing, empty feeling could only be replaced with a child. “Sweetheart, I know you are afraid that the wish could go wrong, but the wishes in the past went right, and we have been dreaming about having children.” said Sarah calmly. The look in Sarah’s dark blue eyes was both longing and hopeful, and that look melted his heart, so he gave in. he took the rock in his hands and whispered, “I wish I had children.” When he got done saying the words the rock exploded with light that was much brighter and intense than before, then it grew forever dark. The Wishing Rock was now nothing more than an ordinary pebble, it’s power had been drained from John’s final wish. John wasn’t sure if the wish worked, so the only choice he had was to wait.  Then one day Sarah came running with some exciting news, she said “Honey, look at me does something look different!” He took a while to find the difference in her but he finally saw that her belly forming into bump. At that moment John said with shock and extreme happiness, “A baby, I am going to be a dad!” He was so shocked that he almost passed out. Now finally after all the years of trying, John and Sarah were going to get the best gift that no amount of money could buy.\"heart\"
