upon your mental chessboard

yes, i used to be a king
i shuffled, deft, along your squares
surveying everything
i had a scepter and a crown
and hymns to me you'd sing
upon your mental chessboard
yes, i used to be a king

upon your mental chessboard
yes, i used to be a knight
an armored man upon a steed
in sudden scattered flight
i yearned for luscious victory
a taste for bloody fight
upon your mental chessboard
yes, i used to be a knight

upon your mental chessboard
yes, a bishop i had been
a habit so religious
with your virtue wearing thin
an angel in black robing
with a devil of a grin
upon your mental chessboard
yes, a bishop i had been

upon your mental chessboard
i am now a lowly pawn
a person among many
that you cast your favor on
no crown nor steed nor bible
all these vestiges are gone
upon your mental chessboard
i am now a lowly pawn
