my address was pope avenue

and right across the way
there was a little baptist church
where people came to pray

my parents never went there
but my next door neighbor did
she had a little girl my age
my best friend as a kid

so one day i decided
to attend the sunday school
that's where i first met Jesus
and i learned the golden rule

but the bible kind of scared me
that was such a violent world
depicted in the bible
as the pages i unfurled

and the pastor spoke of hades
where forever we would live
unless we came to Jesus
and our life to him, would give

now when i was a youngster
i was quite afraid of fire
and i did not wish to see it
if i happened to expire

so this became my habit
every time that i would sin
i'd beg forgiveness right away
to make things right again

this sort of thing that wore me out
got baptized at age eight
a type of panacea
where the blessings would be great

but then my life began to change
God took my mom away
and the neighbor changed to stepmom
on a strange december day

and i still attended church there
but my fervor had grown dim
nonetheless i'd bow my head
and join in on the hymns

but after relocating
we attended a new church
and i felt something returning
and into my heart i searched

and i became much more religious
and i sought to spread the word
to search out the world's sinners
and to add them to the herd

and my stepmom grew quite anxious
for she feared i would be hurt
by witnessing to strangers
and she put me on alert

she asked me to resist it
and i felt the question rise
should i honor my stepmother
or the God up in the skies ?

and i went to ask my pastor
and afraid he'd lose his job
took the side of my stepmother
and i felt that i'd been robbed

and i stopped attending church then
couldn't work the whole thing out
and then began a brand new life
with purity in doubt

now once or twice i've traveled
back to see pope avenue
but its grown to be a ghetto
so i always pass right through

but the little church still stands there
it looks very much the same
the little institution
where i started up the game

but i've formed my own religion
and i think its worked out cool
it doesn't have weird stories
but i've kept the golden rule
