About cherishing the small things in life

The wind was biting, but he kept one hand out of his pocket for her to hold, as she always had on their walks together. It’s a little chilly tonight, she’d say, swinging their arms in unison as they waded through the blue cornflowers and golden rapeseed, speckled with poppies of a rich, textured red. She loved the colours of their walks together, even down to the pale and wispy reed canary grass or the plush, full volume of a heavy raincloud. She used to say how these times were special, the sort of quiet memories you’d think of in your twilight years. He'd smile a response and glance at his watch, minding the time. Not too long out love, he’d say. I’ve an early start in the morning.

He’d never been one for the great outdoors. Funny how he spent more time in the fields now, one solitary arm hanging by his side and almost able to feel her hand in his, the memory of it so strong. He watches the sway of dry grass as it brushes against his leg on his way home, the crows cawing softly in the distance, the field silent. Each day he walks a little slower, to hold her hand a little longer, and watch as the colours fade away.
