Young Love
Short Story by Brandon Skenandore

April 28th, 2020

Its almost time, Jason thought to himself. He sprayed on his Stetson cologne, knowing how much she loves the way the scent soothes her. His slick black hair left her constantly entertained on their dates, but he knew this wasn’t gonna be an ordinary date, he wanted her to know just how much he loved her. I’m finally going to ask her, I’m finally gonna ask her hand.
“Hey man, good luck tonight. There’s no way she can say no for what you have planned,” said his roommate as he walked in, dressed in his performance tuxedo. “You’re a great guy Jason, you deserve the best.”
Jason turned to him from the mirror, locking into his silvery blue eyes, “Thank you, send me a text when you and the quartet are ready, tonight is gonna be perfect.” Earlier that day, Jason got his girlfriend, Kayla, to run around town on a hunt for the roses he set for her with the clue to the next place. “Alex, I want you to know that I’ve always been grateful for you being here for me, even through my worst times. I couldn’t ask for a better friend, you’re like a brother to me.”
“That’s what friends are for, right?” Alex said, smirking with a chuckle. “After all, I’m gonna be your best man one day, and you’re gonna be my best man some day if I ever decide to get married.”
“You, my friend, deserve a great girl, no matter just how much your cello has your heart.” They both laughed, giving light to the air. “Just try to get back out there man, I know it was hard after Ela left you. You deserve someone who’s gonna love you no matter how much you play that cursed cello.”
Alex smiled sadly and nodded, leaving Jason alone. He knew Alex thought she was the one, and still did, despite the fact that the perfect girl for him was right in front of him. You’ll see it soon, my friend. Time will show your heart your soul mate.

Jason sat at the table, taking in the sounds of the cellist, his best friend and brother Alex, playing Bach’s Prelude No. 1 of the Cello Suites. It was his favorite piece in high school, soothing his mind from the heart break. You’re still so young my friend, just wait for God to open your eyes to her. He took in the beauty of the song, taking in the surroundings, the velvet curtains, granite tiled floor, the multicolored flames from the candles, then he saw her. Kayla, wearing the violet silk dress with the black 1 inch heels, took his breath away, her beauty captivating, entrapping. He hadn’t notice Alex texting him, giving the signal that the quartet was ready, the blonde streaked black curled hair had an illuminatingly beautiful glow from the light of the candles, he lost track of what to do momentarily.
The glow of her hazel eyes set him in a trance as she sat down. “You like it?” she said teasingly, turning his mind to mush.
“Y-you look beautiful,” he almost lost his voice from the trance.
“Good, my neighbor saw you go in my house with it,” she smiled and glanced into his eyes. “I love the roses, and the dress. What do you have planned to make this night so special?”
Jason grinned embarrassed and said, “Who said I had anything planned? Maybe I just wanted to do something nice for the love of my life. I guess I’ve lost my ninja abilities.” As Jason spoke, the quartet set up to play Alex’s arranged of the prelude, meant for an orchestra. “Kayla, we’ve been together for almost seven years, and I think its time we start our lives together.”

Kayla’s 18th birthday

They had been dating for two years, and Jason wanted to make her eighteenth birthday unforgettable. They got in his coal black Forerunner, and set off on the road to his favorite lake in Wisconsin. Driving to the lake was beautiful experience for the both of them, the tree lines giving way to a multitude of colors, reflecting off the water, giving the lake a dream like look. The natural ivory green colors of the leaves glazed in her eyes as she admired the beauty of nature as she always had living on the reservation with her family, befriending Jason freshman year of high school, finding companionship and love throughout their junior year together.
“It’s so beautiful,” she said, her hazel-brown eyes dancing out among the forest line. “I’ve never been in this part of the state before, this is so captivating,” her voice carried off admirably.
“It seems like a different world every time I come out here, the beauty of it all never leaves my mind, making me want to stay here and never leave,” Jason said, staring out the windshield as they drove. “I was hoping to bring you out here some day, this place, it’s a place of tranquility, but is a great place for a date. I wanted you to see something almost as beautiful as you, the reason I love the way I do. Here, I wanted you to see the world I want to give you.”
Smiling widely, Kayla sighed, “I guess I’ll have to marry you, so I can marry this place, so I can have this world you love and be apart of it.”
As their conversation carried on, they turned down a dirt road, heading to the dock where the family boat was kept. They got on the boat when they got to the dock, sailing out towards the center of the lake. Jason managed to keep her distracted long enough to pull out his guitar, surprising Kayla, leaving her speechless as he strummed the first few chords away, and began to sing.

Merrily we fall
Out of line, out of line
I’d fall anywhere with you
I’m by your side

Swinging in the rain
Humming melodies
We're not going anywhere until we freeze

I’m not afraid, anymore
I’m not afraid

Forever is a long time
But I wouldn't mind spending it by your side

Carefully we'll place our destiny
You came and you took this heart, and set it free
Every word you write or sing is so warm to me, so warm to me
I’m torn, I’m torn to be right where you are

I’m not afraid, anymore
I’m not afraid

Forever is a long time
But I wouldn't mind spending it by your side
Tell me everyday I get to wake up to that smile
I wouldn't mind it at all
I wouldn't mind it at all

You so know me
Pinch me gently
I can hardly breathe

Forever is a long, long time
But I wouldn't mind spending it by your side
Tell me everyday I get to wake up to that smile
I wouldn't mind it at all
I wouldn't mind it at all

Tears rolled down her cheeks as she beamed a smile, a warm sensation growing in her heart and butterflies in her stomach. “I love you, Kayla. Nothing in the world would make me happier than being with you, I wouldn’t mind a forever by your side.”
“Jason, this is going to sound crazy, but no one in the universe could make me happier than how happy you’ve made me. A forever with you, is a perfect dream come true,” she said, joy glowing in her voice and dancing in her eyes. “Hold me forever and never let go, never stop loving me.”
Jason grinned and took her in his arms as he set down his guitar, laying on the padded part of the boat. “I don’t think I can ever stop loving you, I can’t wait for our eternity to begin,” he said, kissing her as she cuddled up to him, the warm air breezing off the lake water, making the trees dance in the sun.

“Kayla Marie Grace, will you do me the honor of taking my hand in marriage, to begin our eternity together?” Jason said, tears welling up in his eyes.
Kayla smiled brightly and kissed Jason, “Yes! Jason, yes, I love you so much.”

The birth of their first daughter

“What are we going to name her?” Kayla asked excitedly.
“How about Evelyn Rose Johnston? After her great grandmother, a wise and beautiful woman,” he said lovingly.
“Evelyn Rose, she’s perfect, like her father. She has the same chocolate brown eyes as you, and your smile, I can see it already,” Kayla beamed.

Valentines Day

“Daddy, how did you and mommy love each other so much?” Evelyn asked curiously.
Jason began tucking her into to bed, “You want to know our story, little munchkin?” Jason asked, tickling his beautiful giggling seven year old daughter.
“Yes, I wanna know the whole story of how you love each other so much,” she said, trying to get out of being tickled.
“Well lets see,” Jason stopped tickling her and took her in his arms. “We met in high school when I high fived her so hard, her hand hurt for two days straight. Everyday, we high fived each other and laughed when we would go to lunch, your mom would always tease me that I didn’t high five her hard enough. Without knowing it, over the years, your mother and I formed young love-“
“Did you ever take her on special dates?”
“As often as I could, one time for her birthday, I took her out to the lake and sung her a song that made heart melt. We took your granddad’s boat on the water and stayed there all day, laying in the warm sun with the trees dancing in the wind. They were dancing with the spirits of your ancestors, dancing with the light of love in nature,” he told her as Kayla walked in.
“And many years later, your father asked me to marry him at a candle lit dinner with music and my favorite foods,” she said, cuddling up on the other side of Evelyn. “I said yes, and we got married later that year. But you want to know what made us love each other more than anything else in the entire world?”
“Yes!” Evelyn said, giggling as her mother poked her bellybutton.
“It was you. When you were born, nothing else mattered in the world except the fact that you made our family whole, you gave your father and I another another big reason to love each other as much as we do.”
“I want a love just like yours, a young love started just like yours,” Evelyn said cheerfully.
“And one day you will, little munchkin. One day you will have the world, but no one will love you more than your parents until that day comes,” Jason said. “And that man better come talk to me first if he wants to marry my little girl.”
Evelyn laughed and hugged her father goodnight, “He will daddy, and one day, I’m gonna be just like you. Goodnight daddy. Goodnight mommy.”
“Goodnight sweetie,” they both said, kissing her goodnight.
