DUSTIN slaps GRAYSON on the face.

DUSTIN

(Angry/ upset) When did you become the one that complains? Grayson doesn’t whine about not being ready or strong enough. Who are you? What have you done with Grayson?

GRAYSON

(Changes the sound of his voice) Grayson is gone. (Normal) Joking.

GRAYSON smiles waiting for a laugh. DUSTIN doesn’t laugh and walks away from GRAYSON.

DUSTIN

(While walking away) You better give it your best or don’t even do it.

The coach blows his whistle.

He is COACH AMSTERDAM (51). COACH AMSTERDAM is a buff man with no hair.

COACH AMSTERDAM

As you all know, only ten of you can make each team. Some of you will not make the team. (A beat)

COACH AMSTERDAM CONT’D

Here’s what we’re going to do: we are going to separate into boys and girls.

COACH AMSTERDAM raises his right arm.

COACH AMSTERDAM

Boys on this side of the court.

COACH AMSTERDAM puts down his right arm and raises his left arm.

COACH AMSTERDAM

Girls or should I say ladies, on the other side.

People cheer and go to their sides. DUSTIN and GRAYSON are standing next to each other in the boys section.

DUSTIN

(Talking quietly to GRAYSON) Oh, I can not believe Dale Nathan is trying out. He’s not going to make it.

GRAYSON

(Talking quietly to DUSTIN) I think there’s something going on with Amsterdam and Spucker.

A boy from the other team steals the ball. The ball stealer dribbles the ball to the basket. He passes the ball to DUSTIN. DUSTIN shoots and makes a basket. GRAYSON and DUSTIN high five even though they are on opposite teams.

GRAYSON

Nice shot.

DUSTIN

Step up your game. The coach hasn’t paid much attention to you.

The ball is thrown into the game again. DUSTIN and GRAYSON run after the ball. GRAYSON is running faster than before and he grabs the ball. GRAYSON dribbles the ball half of the court and a few people, including DUSTIN run after him.

A unnaturally skinny boy on GRAYSON’S team, on the other side of the court waves his arms. He is DALE NATHAN (15).

DALE

Grayson, over here!

GRAYSON passes the ball to DALE. DALE fumbles the ball while trying to dribble it. GRAYSON continues to run down the court. DALE passes the ball to another boy. That boy passes the ball to GRAYSON. GRAYSON stops in his place and picks the ball up. No is blocking GRAYSON. It is an easy shot. GRAYSON shoots the ball. The ball is nowhere near the hoop. Someone from the other team takes the ball.

DUSTIN

(Shouting to GRAYSON) How could you miss that??

GRAYSON runs after the person with the ball. The person with the ball passes it to a different person. That person dribbles the ball and someone from GRAYSON’S team steals the ball. GRAYSON’S team member passes it to DALE. DALE is in the middle of the court. He looks around for someone to pass it to but they are all blocked. DALE looks at the hoop.

GRAYSON

Someone in the crowd speaks.

I think he’s dead.

DUSTIN
Jeez. I was just making sure. Is his mom coming to get him?

NURSE

Father. He will be here in a few moments.

DUSTIN slowly walks over to GRAYSON and crouches by him. DUSTIN’S face is in front of GRAYSON’S face.

DUSTIN

(Whispering) You would be lucky if you made it on the team as the water boy, after what you did. That was the worst performance I ever witnessed. You are better at me in basketball. I don’t know what happened to you.

NURSE

Get out of here!

DUSTIN

After school, I’m going to come over to check on you. The team members will be posted after school today.

DUSTIN stands up straight and walks out of the room.

INT. SCHNEIDER CAR- MORNING

MR. SCHNEIDER pulls into the driver. His hair is still pink.

MR. SCHNEIDER

Since I’m no where near strong enough to carry you inside. You will stay in here.

GRAYSON’S head shakes. GRAYSON mumbles, still half knocked-out.

GRAYSON

I don’t feel good. My stomach hurts.

MR. SCHNEIDER

Can you hear me?

GRAYSON

(Mumbling) Dustin, did I make the team?

MR. SCHNEIDER

It’s not Dustin. It’s your father.

GRAYSON’S left eye opens and peaks at MR. SCHNEIDER. GRAYSON opens the door and stumbles out at soon as he sees MR. SCHNEIDER. GRAYSON is stumbling around like a drunk man. MR. SCHNEIDER is watching GRAYSON. GRAYSON trips and falls. MR. SCHNEIDER opens his door quickly. He walks over to GRAYSON while talking.

MR. SCHNEIDER

(Worried) Grayson! Grayson! Are you ok?

GRAYSON laughs and smiles.

GRAYSON

The ground is so comfortable.

MR. SCHNEIDER

Let me help you up.

MR. SCHNEIDER bends down to help GRAYSON up.

GRAYSON

No! I got it.

GRAYSON puts himself up on his hands and knees. He stands up. GRAYSON walks and begins to stumble. He stumbles into the house and falls.

MR. SCHNEIDER

Grayson! Stop trying to do this on your own and allow me to help you!

MR. SCHNEIDER walks over to GRAYSON and puts his arm around GRAYSON’S waist. He pulls him up and a crack is heard.

MR. SCHNEIDER

Ow my back!

MR. SCHNEIDER puts GRAYSON arm around his shoulder. MR. SCHNEIDER puts his arm around GRAYSON’S shoulder. GRAYSON puts his weight on MR. SCHNEIDER. MR. SCHNEIDER ‘carries’ GRAYSON into the house.

INT. SCHNEIDER HOUSE- SAME

GRAYSON

(Baby talk) You’re mean.

GRAYSON laughs. MR. SCHNEIDER sits on the table. MR. SCHNEIDER puts his hand on GRAYSON’S shoulder and pushes down. GRAYSON stops laughing and stares at MR. SCHNEIDER.

GRAYSON

Too much force.

MR. SCHNEIDER

(Angrily) I think I know why you’re acting this way. You’ve been drinking!

GRAYSON

Drinking as in alcohol? (Offended) You know I don’t drink. How could you accuse me of that? I may make wrong decisions sometimes but I would never.

MR. SCHNEIDER

Don’t lie to me. Just because you had to run to school and you didn’t eat, it doesn’t make you delirious and incredibly stupid. Well, you’re always stupid but you’re not delirious.

GRAYSON

You’re not nice.

MR. SCHNEIDER

Have you or have you not been drinking?

GRAYSON

I haven’t. I didn’t. I wouldn’t.

MR. SCHNEIDER

The drinking limit is twenty one. You are sixteen. You shouldn’t be lying to me.

GRAYSON

I’m not lying. I haven’t been drinking. That is not something I would do.

MR. SCHNEIDER

This is lower than low. I don’t know how to punish you for this one.

GRAYSON

You can’t punish me for something I didn’t do. I’m telling the truth. I promise you that.

MR. SCHNEIDER puts more force on GRAYSON’S shoulder.

GRAYSON

What are you? A monster?

MR. SCHNEIDER

Tell me the truth and I will go easy on you.

GRAYSON bursts into tears.

GRAYSON

(Through clenched teeth) I hate you.

MR. SCHNEIDER takes his arm off of GRAYSON.

MR. SCHNEIDER

(Yelling) Sometimes I hate you too!

He storms off into another room. GRAYSON sits up. He wipes the tears from his eyes. He rolls up his shirt sleeve. On his skin a pink hand print is where MR. SCHNEIDER put force.

GRAYSON

Thank god for fake tears. It was the only way to get rid of that monster.

DUSTIN

Really? You’re still passed out. I thought by now you would be awake.

GRAYSON

(Keeping his eyes closed) I am awake. My eyes are just closed.

DUSTIN walks to GRAYSON and sits on the table.

DUSTIN

You’re awake?

GRAYSON

Yes, but I feel terrible.

DUSTIN

When you die, can I have your x-box?

GRAYSON fakes a laugh.

GRAYSON

No. Why are you here?

DUSTIN

I came to check on you. Do you think you’re good enough to take a ride to the school?

GRAYSON

Did they post who made the team?

DUSTIN

Probably. I haven’t checked it yet. I wanted to check if you wanted to come with.

GRAYSON

Yes.

GRAYSON’S eyes open. DUSTIN looks at GRAYSON’S arm.

DUSTIN

Yikes! What did you do to your arm?

GRAYSON

My dad was accusing me of drinking.

GRAYSON sits up.

GRAYSON

I don’t know if I can walk yet.

DUSTIN

Do you want me to help you?

GRAYSON

Let me try first.

DUSTIN stands up and moves to the side so GRAYSON can stand up. GRAYSON stands up and he seems stable. GRAYSON takes two steps towards DUSTIN and falls. DUSTIN catches GRAYSON and struggles to hold him up.

GRAYSON

Thanks bud.

DUSTIN pushes GRAYSON onto his feet so he can stand.

DUSTIN

No problem, Tin Man. I think I have crutches in the back of my car.

GRAYSON

Why would you have crutches in your car?

DUSTIN wraps his arm around GRAYSON’S neck. GRAYSON puts his weight on DUSTIN. DUSTIN and GRAYSON walks out of the house.

DUSTIN

From last month when I sprain my ankle. I never put them back in my house.

DUSTIN opens the passenger door. GRAYSON detaches himself from DUSTIN and sits in the passenger seat. GRAYSON closes the door. DUSTIN runs around the car and goes into the driver’s seat.

DUSTIN

I hope we both made the team.

GRAYSON

I did hear you in the nurse’s office. I know you don’t think I made it. I’m pretty sure I didn’t make the team as well.

GRAYSON

I think these will work.

DUSTIN

Good because I don’t want to carry you to the school.

DUSTIN walks around the car again and closes his door. GRAYSON stands up on the crutches. Music plays and it’s the tin man song from “The Wizard of Oz”. The song only plays when the tin man is dancing part.

DUSTIN

I can’t stay this noble. I’ll meet you there.

The song ends after DUSTIN speaks. DUSTIN runs ahead to the school. As soon as DUSTIN is out of hearing distance, GRAYSON mumbles to himself.

GRAYSON

(To himself) Some friend, you are.

GRAYSON limps over to the school with his crutches. DUSTIN is looking at a piece of paper when GRAYSON walks up.

DUSTIN

I made it. No sweat. Oh, my gosh! Dale made the team. That’s a big shocker. No one is a bigger cluts than Dale!

GRAYSON limps up to the paper DUSTIN is looking at.

GRAYSON

(Looking at the paper) What we’ve said is proven. I didn’t make it. (Angrily) But that clumsy oaf, Dale made it! I can’t believe this! I need to talk to the coach. This must be a mistake.

GRAYSON opens the school door and limps in. DUSTIN realizes what GRAYSON is doing and follows him. They talk while advancing down the hallway.

INT. SCHOOL FRESHMAN HALLWAY- SAME

DUSTIN

What are you doing?

GRAYSON

I need to talk to Coach Amsterdam!

DUSTIN

By talking, I hope you mean that you are not going to use violence.

GRAYSON

Of course! I would never hit a teacher. Think he’ll be in his gym?

DUSTIN

That’s the best place to probably find him.

GRAYSON and DUSTIN go to the gym in silence. GRAYSON goes into the gym first.

GRAYSON

(Shouting) Coach Amsterdam!! Are you in here?

COACH AMSTERDAM calls from a small room.

COACH AMSTERDAM (OC)

I’m here. I’m just in my office.

DUSTIN

Come on, let’s go.

DUSTIN jogs ahead. GRAYSON follows. GRAYSON and DUSTIN go into COACH AMSTERDAM’S office.

INT. COACH AMSTERDAM’S OFFICE/SUPPLY CLOSET- SAME

COACH AMSTERDAM

(Looking at the boys) Hello, boys. Dustin, congrats on making the team. Grayson, I’m glad you’re walking again… sort of.

GRAYSON

Coach, I need to talk to you about the tryouts.

COACH AMSTERDAM

Alright. What’s up? Even though I know what you’re going to say. Take a seat.

GRAYSON sits in a chair. DUSTIN picks up a basketball.

GRAYSON

I know I didn’t do a very good job today.

COACH AMSTERDAM

You can say that again.

In the background of the scene between GRAYSON and the coach, DUSTIN is spinning the basketball on his finger.

GRAYSON

But you know me. You know that I’m great at basketball. I was on the freshmen team last year.

In the background, DUSTIN is now rolling the ball on his shoulders.

GRAYSON

I was one of the ten people on the team who won the championship. You have seen me at every basketball camp.

COACH AMSTERDAM stands up suddenly and smacks the table with both hands.

COACH AMSTERDAM

(Angrily) You didn’t bring you’re A-game today! I need top performances all the time! I’m not going to make an acceptance for you.

GRAYSON

But today was not a good day. I don’t know what was wrong. I’m usually at better than best.

COACH AMSTERDAM

No acceptance. Not even for you. I don’t care how good you are! You didn’t make the team this year! Sorry, pal, but you got to go.

GRAYSON grabs the crutches and stands up on them. GRAYSON limps out of the office. DUSTIN puts down the basketball.

DUSTIN

Thanks Coach for letting me on the team.

DUSTIN follows GRAYSON out. GRAYSON leans on the wall next to the doors. DUSTIN looks at GRAYSON disappointedly.

BELLA’S VOICE

Grayson! Oh dear!

BELLA is seen running up to GRAYSON. BELLA is in a cheerleading outfit.

BELLA

Why are you on crutches?

DUSTIN

Hey, Bella.

GRAYSON

I can’t walk very well.

BELLA

Grayson… what will mom and dad say?

GRAYSON

Dad will accuse me of drinking.

BELLA

No he wouldn’t.

GRAYSON

He would cause he already did it. He also said he hated me.

GRAYSON

I don’t care if I didn’t make the team.

DUSTIN

Here we go again.

GRAYSON

Maybe I should go as a new student tomorrow. I should go as a girl and ask to join the team.

DUSTIN

That would be pretty foolish.

GRAYSON

I know. I would lose all dignity.

BELLA

I dare you to do it.

DUSTIN

I’m taking part in this!

GRAYSON

What’s in it for me?

BELLA

If you do it, I will give you ten bucks.

DUSTIN

I would too!

GRAYSON

Alright you guys got a deal. Who needs basketball? There will be football next quarter. I think I can do that.

BELLA

Grayson, give it a rest already. We know that your upset about the team.

GRAYSON

(Stubbornly) I’m also jealous.

BELLA

Of what?

GRAYSON

I’m very jealous of Dale and you, Dustin.

DUSTIN

I made the team fair and square. Don’t be jealous.

GRAYSON

It’s hard not to be, when Dale is terrible at basketball. Know what I’m saying?

DUSTIN

I know. I can’t believe I have to be on a team with that guy. I don’t think we are going to go for the win this year.

BELLA

Well, I’ll be there to cheer for you.

DUSTIN

Maybe Grayson can get a spot on the cheerleading team.

BELLA laugh out loud. DUSTIN joins her.

GRAYSON

(Sarcastically) You guys are so funny.

BELLA

Jealous of our humor, too?

GRAYSON

No, I’m grateful that I don’t have it.

BELLA

Boo-hoo. You’re jealous.

GRAYSON

I can’t live without basketball.

GRAYSON can walk now. GRAYSON stands up and walks into kitchen.

BELLA

Wait, what?

BELLA and GRAYSON run into the kitchen.

DUSTIN

Grayson don’t do it!

GRAYSON pulls out a knife from the holder.

GRAYSON

Why not? I’m thirsty.

BELLA

What are you doing?

GRAYSON

I’m going to make orange juice. What did you think I was going to do?

DUSTIN

You said you couldn’t live without basketball. We thought that you would-

GRAYSON

(Interrupting DUSTIN) I’m not that stupid to do that.

BELLA laughs, confused. BELLA faints and DUSTIN catches her with one arm. He holds her up by the other arm.

GRAYSON

Wow, Bella.

BELLA comes back into consciousness. She grabs DUSTIN’S arm and pulls herself up.

GRAYSON

I can’t live without basketball metaphorically. It’s just. Grr. I’m so angry about it.

MRS. SCHNEIDER walks into the kitchen in work clothes.

MRS. SCHNEIDER

Hi guys. What’s up?

BELLA

(To GRAYSON) Are you going to tell her?

MRS. SCHNEIDER

Tell me what?

GRAYSON

I don’t know if I should. Should I tell the whole story?

MRS. SCHNEIDER

You do know, that I am right here.

BELLA

Of course you should. You were in danger when it happened.

MRS. SCHNEIDER

What is going on here?

GRAYSON

I was on crutches all day. I also didn’t make the basketball team.

BELLA

The other thing. With… um… your monster.

GRAYSON

Terry accused me of drinking and he left a bruise on my arm.

MRS. SCHNEIDER

What!

GRAYSON rolls up his shirt sleeve and shows the bruise to MRS. SCHNEIDER.

Why would you need to talk to me ?

DALE

Remember the basketball tryouts?

GRAYSON

I didn’t want to. But now I do.

GRAYSON

I know that too.

DALE

I want you take my spot.

GRAYSON

(Surprised) Really?

DALE

Yes. I want you to take my spot because you are the best I know.

GRAYSON

That’s awesome. Thanks, Dale.

DALE

But there’s a catch. I don’t have the guts to talk to Coach Amsterdam alone. I need your help.

GRAYSON

Of course. Coach A. is a bit of a loud mouth. I know what you’re saying.

DALE

Thank you so much, Grayson! You are the best.

GRAYSON puts a few books out of his locker. DUSTIN is gone by now.

DALE

When are you going to be available to go?

GRAYSON

I don’t know. How about now?

DALE

Aren’t you concerned about being tardy?

GRAYSON

Why would I be worried about being late to lunch?

DALE

Oh, yeah. Right.

GRAYSON shuts his locker. GRAYSON smiles.

GRAYSON

Let’s go.

GRAYSON and DALE walk down the hallway. They walk until DALE talks when they are in the Freshman Hallway.

DALE

Are we friends?

GRAYSON

I don’t know. Are we?

DALE

You seem like a nice guy. I’ve heard you saying I’m a clumsy oaf sometimes.

GRAYSON

I am so-

DALE

(Interrupting GRAYSON) Don’t be sorry. I call myself that too.

DALE turns towards a closet.

GRAYSON

What are you doing?

DALE

This closet leads to the coach’s office. I know all of the secret passageways and stuff.

DALE goes into the closet and GRAYSON follows. The closet is dimly lighted. DALE is talking while going through the closet.

DALE

In the lunch room, there is also a hidden trap door. The door leads to a crawl space. This school has a lot of secrets. I have found out almost every one.

DALE and GRAYSON walk through the closet and they are now in COACH AMSTERDAM’S supply closet/ office. COACH AMSTERDAM is in his office.

COACH AMSTERDAM

Hello, Dale. Do you have something to talk to me about?

DALE goes silent. DALE nudges GRAYSON with his elbow. GRAYSON comes into view of the coach.

GRAYSON

Um…

DALE

(Whispering to GRAYSON) Say it.

GRAYSON

Dale wants to quit the team.

COACH AMSTERDAM

How do I know you’re not putting him up to this?

GRAYSON

I am not that evil.

COACH AMSTERDAM

Dale, give me an approval if this was your idea.

DALE puts on a fake smile and puts his thumb up.

COACH AMSTERDAM

Verbal response, please.

GRAYSON

You can do it, Dale.

DALE takes a long pause. He is biting his lip. DALE is looking nervous and afraid. DALE says his lines quietly.

DALE

(Sheepishly) Yessiry! I don’t want to be on the team at all.

COACH AMSTERDAM

Very interesting.

DALE

(Sheepishly) I want Grayson to take my spot.

COACH AMSTERDAM

That’s not the way it works.

GRAYSON

(Excitedly) Let me try out then.

COACH AMSTERDAM

No way.

DALE

You really don’t like Grayson.

GRAYSON

Let me show you what I have shown you before.

GRAYSON picks the basketball up.

COACH AMSTERDAM

Put my basketball back.

GRAYSON runs out of the office while dribbling the basketball. COACH AMSTERDAM and DALE run after GRAYSON. GRAYSON is in front of a basket.

GRAYSON

Watch this!

COACH AMSTERDAM

Make a basket and you will have a detention today.

GRAYSON makes a basket. DALE looks surprised and COACH AMSTERDAM is angry.

COACH AMSTERDAM

Schneider! Detention!

GRAYSON

(Crazily) Do you think that was bad?

GRAYSON runs to the ball and back to the basket.

COACH AMSTERDAM

Shoot another basket and you get a detention tomorrow!

GRAYSON

Watch this move!

GRAYSON turns around backwards. GRAYSON throws the basketball over his head. The ball goes into the basket. GRAYSON turns around to see if he made and turns back around. His hands go up in the air.

GRAYSON

Swish!

COACH AMSTERDAM

You have a detention tomorrow! And you lost your dignity.

GRAYSON

My dignity is long gone.

COACH AMSTERDAM

You made the team with your desperate tone.

GRAYSON

(Calling out) Yess!!

GRAYSON is doing a celebration dance.

COACH AMSTERDAM

First practice is tomorrow morning.

COACH AMSTERDAM shakes his head in disapproval as GRAYSON dances.

COACH AMSTERDAM

(Walking to his office) Get to lunch, Gezelda.

GRAYSON stops his celebration dance.

DALE

Gezelda?

GRAYSON

Long story. That shattered any leftover dignity I had.

DALE and GRAYSON begin to walk slowly out of the gym.

DALE

You are the most strong-headed, stubborn person, I know.

GRAYSON

That’s the way I role. I would not be on the team without it.

DALE

Congratulations.

GRAYSON

Thank you, Dale. I’m also sorry.

DALE

For what?

GRAYSON

Everything. I’ve been mean to you.

DALE

I’m fine with it.

GRAYSON

We are friends. You are cooler than I thought you were.

DALE

Thanks.

GRAYSON holds up his fist. DALE pounds GRAYSON’S fist.

GRAYSON

Come over to my house later today. We’ll have a celebration party.

DALE

You have a detention.

GRAYSON

After that!

DALE

It’s Tuesday.

GRAYSON

So? It will only last for like an hour. My parents are going out for dinner tonight.

DALE

I guess I can.

GRAYSON

It’s part of the game, D. Don’t be such a sore loser.

DUSTIN

I’m not a sore loser. I just thought you would give me a break because you are my friend.

HANK

That’s right. All of the morning of the tryouts, I was sabotaging Grayson’s chance to get on the team. But he still made the team.

A glass is heard shattering. HANK talks angrily.

HANK

Gah! I knew Grayson would be miserable about not making the team but I didn’t know he would still make the team. (Looking around) I turned off his alarm, put a special formula in his water all for nothing! He will pay for his actions. Nothing will stop me.

HANK stares into the camera. We see a flick of light in his eyes. The flick of light is supposed to resemble his evil.

HANK

Nothing.
