When I told him,

He suggested dinner,

Which was fine with me.

He ordered a steak.

I ordered scallops.

He said that was an expensive choice.

I apologized.

He waved his hand.

The waiter brought us more water.

And I thanked him.

He left. I drank.

Across from me, he coughed.

We talked about nothing.

How’s school?

Good.

How’s grandma?

Good.

Did you make friends?

Yeah.

Did you fit in?

Not really.

He snorted.

He expected that.

I laughed with him.

He paid.

We left.

He took me home.

He came inside.

He said hello.

Hello, mother.

Hello, dear.

Mother, I just took Shane out for dinner,

I know.

But do you know?

Yes.

How long?

I’ve always known.

I hung my head and cried.
She pat my back and kissed my hair.

He gave me a hug

Said goodbye

And left.

And that was that.
