When I told him,

He suggested dinner,

Which was fine with me.

He ordered a steak.

I ordered scallops.

He said that was an expensive choice.

I apologized.

He waved his hand.

The waiter brought us more water.

And I thanked him.

He left. I drank.

Across from me, he coughed.

We talked about nothing.

How’s school?

How’s grandma?

Did you make friends?

Did you fit in?

Not really.

He snorted.

He expected that.

I laughed with him.

He paid.

We left.

He took me home.

He came inside.

He said hello.

Hello, mother.

Hello, dear.

Mother, I just took Shane out for dinner,

I know.

But do you know?

How long?

I’ve always known.

I hung my head and cried.
She pat my back and kissed my hair.

He gave me a hug

Said goodbye

And left.

And that was that.
