MOTHERS

We are the links
connecting generations.
Time runs back into our genealogies,
back beyond our ability to name or count
how many greats
to honor those grandmothers.
Names and places
dusty with time,
faceless mysteries
from lands made of legend
hands twisted, gnarled with work
reach back still further
than any knowledge
we can express in words,
tie daughters to mothers
who were once daughters.
The flow of time reverses
into antiquity so distant,
so dimmed with the passing lives
as great mountains on the horizon appear
small, hazy, blue;
women who bore children
or nurtured them, raised them,
form the granite bedrock,
the backbone of entire ranges,
anchors and up lifters of civilizations
which will root themselves on us
or become rootless, without connection,
break links with the future,
sever us from the past.
