Tears drizzled on their sooty faces, stained decorum and drowned control. The overwhelming stench of roasted innocence, made Krystallya´s hand tremble on the hilt of her double-edged companion.

How much was -too much-? When Argus, Lumen and herself swore allegiance to the Light Brotherhood, they were three snooty neophytes who didn´t differentiate a broadsword from a grand sword. They thought they grabbed a blade by the hilt and buried the other end into the enemy´s heart…

Krystallya fidgeted on her warhorse. They all felt impotent before the massacre they were forced to observe. Those had been the orders. She looked at her friends and tightened the grip on the hilt. “Can you believe it? Twenty long years have scurried like gold imperials down a ripped pouch. Countless moons that watched us feed on crudely toasted desert serpents, so we could give our food to the forsaken villagers we´ve saved in the holy name of the Great Designer”

Argus looked at Lumen helplessly. They knew Krystallya very well. She ate raw iron for breakfast without flinching. She continued with her tirade “Our warhorses bit the dust; oftentimes eating old, bland oats. Hard and cold bed; love has always been a stranger in my heart. Passion? Motherhood? Not in my vocabulary. I´ve become another man in the team”

She was so vexed!! They could not weave any spells at the moment, the imperial dragon riders were still blazing helpless youth and women “ Perhaps you could use some praying, Krys” said Argus softly “I wanna hurt somebody, badly!” She replied “I´ve prayed but my breastbone feels empty, restless”

The smell of burned flesh flooded them and the screaming was unbearable. The Village blazed brightly. It was a horrid sight. Krystallya closed her eyes and started mumbling something. Argus knew what it meant. He had seen that transformation before. She turned towards them and spoke: “You have tried to stop me long enough. I say we go and terminate those dastard riders and fix ourselves some dragon stew” Lumen tried to persuade her “ Krys, the reinforcements should be here at any moment. Keep yourself together”

“No, Lumen. If my end is marked on this day, you won´t save me; so if you wanna stop me you´ll have to kill me. I won´t watch anymore innocent children die under imperial dragons´ fire. So here goes, for the Light!!! May my soul be forgiven…

Krystallya hopped on her warhorse and spurred him hard while weaving a speed incantation. Soon the burning fields crawled with imperial wings. Lumen laughed and drew his dragon-killer crossbow. Argus cursed, but in a quick dash and ensuing spell reached Krystallya, who was already engaged in a close fight with two dragon riders.

A dragon head fell past by her warhorse. The creature didn´t get to utter a sound when the sword kissed its neck; and before the rider could engage, Krystallya danced her double edge in two tempos as the chunks joined the fallen scaly-skull. Argus rushed to meet the other rider for Krystallya had remained in an awkward position. Blood rained on their faces in hot squirts.Dragons kept falling without their swords´ aide; it was evident that Lumen´s dragon-killer crossbow had been busy.

“Krys, we were supposed to wait for the reinforcements. Must you always be so impulsive?” screamed Argus while dodging a spear thrust “I hate being so predictable, Argus. Where has dialog gotten us so far? Just plain imperial lies!” She spat. Lumen stood between them “Guys, I am sorry to intrude in your romantic musings, but I believe we´d be better off weaving a speed incantation and leave while we can” He pointed to the horizon.

An imperial horn echoed in the field and a cloud of wings blotted the visible skyline. They looked at each other, mumbled, gestured and spurred their mounts; dashing away from the battlefield and reaching a nearby thick forest. They got off their warhorses and waited in silence.

“This rash action has made us a target, Krys. Can´t you see what you have caused?” said Argus in a sad tone and shaking his head “Don´t call me Krys, Argus. I´m not in the mood”

Lumen sat quietly as he started a small fire, then he pulled out utensils from his bag to make some tea “You know” He started “I´m still wondering why you two have not gotten married. Twenty years is a long betrothal. Hahaha”

“Shut your mouth!” Argus and Krystallya said in unison.

Lumen smiled and watched the water boiling in the pot and then looked at them “Seriously, brother paladins; that little show at the village ruled out our initial plan” Krystallya clenched her teeth “I just hate when you are right, Lumen. I absolutely hate it” He smiled and curtsied mockingly “If we three saw things from the same viewpoint, we´d be long dead”

They sat in silence sipping their tea. Krystallya was visibly annoyed and her eyes stared into the distance. Argus tried to say something but froze as soon as the glaring shifted in his direction. “Our oath does not contemplate subservience to evil, Argus. The Emperor and that stinky sorcerer of his are behind all this carnage. There isn´t compassion written anywhere” She was definitely about to explode.

“I think we should gather our belongings and never return to the Light Brotherhood Headquarters. Selene may be able to help us” said Argus trying to ease Krystallya´s anger “Selene? Argus, she is a High Priestess. You know she doesn´t support violence, much less murder, not even the enemy´s. I believe you are becoming impractical, my brother” added Lumen with a perfectly straight face.

Argus didn´t answer; deep within he knew Lumen was right. Perhaps Lumen himself could convince Selene to help them, at least indirectly. After having ignored a superior commander and irresponsibly engaged the dragon riders, they had alerted the imperial troops. It was certain that they would be seriously reprimanded. They had to hide not only from imperial soldiers but from their own brotherhood as well…

The few patches of pinkish blue between the tall trees began to fade. They gathered their things and Lumen put off the fire “Nighttime is perfect for you to sneak in, Lumen. You´re the only one of us who doesn´t need to bend under the archway at headquarters” said Argus.

Lumen looked hurt “Are you calling me a dwarf, Argus?” “No, I´m calling you agile and inconspicuous. Got a problem with that old friend?” Lumen burst into laughter. He didn´t seem to take anything very seriously, but mystery hid beneath layers of jokes and smiles.

“Are you doing this or do I have to kiss you first, Lumen?” asked Krystallya with deliberate sarcasm “Sorry sister! I don´t particularly enjoyed incestuous relationships, Hahaha! Besides, Selene´s apprentice is just cut out for me” replied Lumen as he gently nudged his warhorse into movement. “Terranya, the slit-eyed Eastern healer? Hmm…she is a beauty indeed, but Eastern women are very reserved. Are you sure you want to go down that road, Lumen?”

Argus commented concealing a smile. Krystallya looked at both men and rolled her eyes “Would you two stop it? Who´s the woman around here? Must I remind you how swift and deadly night imperial patrols are?” They both looked back at her and whipped their mounts into a canter. She rode a bit behind them scouting the area; eyes intent like a hunting predator…

Their journey had been uneventful. They knew the land very well. They had trodden the way through thickets and ravines to avoid encountering the patrols; occasionally using speed incantations to make up for the delay “We´re just a weaving away from Headquarters’ gates, Lumen. But if you use one, your morph spell will not hold long enough” Argus sounded genuinely concerned.

“Don´t get all sentimental on me, Argus. Leave that repented horsey look for Krys. She loves to be venerated, Hahaha” Krystallya drew her sword angrily, but Argus quickly moved his warhorse before hers while Lumen spurred his steed and disappeared into the night “Leave it, Krys. There´s no need to attract unwanted visitors. We must hide now. We´re sleeping hawks before a crossbow standing here in the open. Let´s go” Krystallya sheathed her ominous blade and rode away without saying a word. Argus knew things could get ugly if he tried to stop her, so he followed her while scouting the surroundings. They needed to rest. An inn was out of the question. He sped his warhorse and caught up with her.

Lumen slowed down. The Headquarters were nearby and word had probably gotten around the Light Brotherhood. Paladins were known for their utter respect of their oath. Lumen would not find any accomplices there. He was on his own. The night was clear and the moon shone with full intensity. It was too risky to perform a morph spell in plain sight. He got off his warhorse; walked with it towards a clear patch in a neighboring thicket. He was ready to start the incantation when he felt some presence behind.

His battle skills allowed him to turn rapidly and stop a hammer rap that was meant to crush his helmet. Before the young paladin could utter a word, Lumen punched him soundly in the pit of the stomach. The youth fell gasping for air. Lumen grabbed the hammer and rapped him hard enough to knock him out. “Thank you, Grand Designer” He muttered as he looked at the starry night “By the Eternal Fire! If that paladin had been a seasoned guard I would’ve had to fight my way out of this” He pause and took a deep breath; then he dragged the unconscious guard and lay him carefully outside the clear patch. Lumen would never hurt anyone if he didn´t have to. His abilities with bows, short swords and daggers were legendary, but he was not carnivorous like Krystallya.

Argus and Krystallya reached a cave. They had used it many times before when they went on missions. Hardship had made them used to this kind of retreat “So here we are again, Krys.” He seemed somehow distant in thought “ I hope Lumen succeeds. If he fails we might as well flee beyond the Eastern border and settle down for good” “You´d like that, wouldn’t you? Finally subdue me and build up a family. It´s not going to happen, Argus” Krystallya said with brimming eyes that betrayed her true feelings “I never said that, Krys. If we can´t get rid of the Empire´s evil plaguingthis land, there´s no use in having a family” Krystallya remained silent. She walked to the cave´s entrance and camouflaged it with thick bushes. Then she weaved a seal spell to prevent magical probing of any kind.

Argus moved to the other end of the cave where water trickled from the rocks and formed a shallow pond. It wasn´t deep enough to swim for it drained down a cracked rock formation; but it kept the water clean and fresh. He needed a bath. Magic could perform body cleansing, but the sensation of fresh water in the skin was beyond all magic. He stripped all of his armor and clothing and sat inside the pond “Those scars in your back, Argus. I cannot forget that day. I thought you would die. Today you still question my thirst for vengeance” “Killing the man who carved them would not restore my skin, Krys. Hatred does not allow people to move on”

Krystallya walked to him totally naked. She wasn´t the most beautiful woman in the world, but well-built muscles and hard rounded breasts matched her sinuous hips and long, toned legs. Moreover, she would unquestionably take an arrow or a thrust for Lumen, Argus or any innocent soul in danger. Argus turned to face her “Ahh, Krys. It´s been so long I´d almost forgotten that silken smoothness under so much metal and layers of padding” She embraced him fiercely and lost herself in his lips. Then she gently separated from him and started washing his back with unbelievable tenderness “If I lost you I don´t think I could bear so much pain, Argus. Promise me you´ll be careful if our plan works out” She caressed his face and bore into his baby blue eyes. He stared back lost in her hazel irises. Both smiled sheepishly.

“I promise to be careful if you promise not to be so rash. You could´ve died at the village, you know that, Krys” He knew Krystallya couldn´t help being so aggressive in the battlefield. She was a better swordsman than him and Lumen together. And that was a lot to say. “Shhh” She drew him nearer and placed his mouth on one nipple “Show me how much you care, paladin. Show me that molten light bubbling within you” Moans bounced from the cave walls, and though water smeared their bodies, fire burned in them for over an hour…
